Girl Scout calls for boycott of cookies...

...because she disagrees with the Girl Scouts attitude of acceptance for transgendered children. She thinks it's "dishonest" for groups to allow boys who identify as girls to join "without letting everyone know". Because obviously, what's going on between an individual's legs is everyone's business.

So I say, let's boycott the boycott - let's all buy cookies to support The Girl Scouts' wonderfully inclusive policy regarding transgendered kids!

I couldn't agree more, as a 20-year member (that's right, I have 13 years on you, sweetie) I have been proud to be part of an organization that told me I could be whatever I wanted, promotes feminism and women's rights (the world association regularly testifies for the UN), and provided me with an environment supporting all girls (when I came out as a lesbian when I was a Senior in College, my old GS leader was the first non-peer person I told). Buy cookies to support EVERY girl, everywhere!

Both of my girls are proud Girl Scouts. No cookie boycotting here! LOL

I think I will tell them about this though so they can think about why it's not okay to single out transgendered people in such a hateful way.

She's scared for her safety??? Sweetie, your fellow Girl Scout (extra emphasis on GIRL) isn't Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. If your parents don't like you being around transgendered kids (and let's face it, the parents are so behind this), maybe you should go check out what the American Heritage Girls have to offer.

Now I must get back to harrassing everyone I know into buying their Girl Scout Cookies from my Brownie and only my Brownie.

Does this moron think boys are masquerading as girls for fun? I don't get this... the whole point of being transgender is one feels trapped in a body of the wrong sex, identifies as being the opposite sex from which they were born, and truly feels like they belong to that sex. Trust me, the Girl Scouts is a very well-run organization. They respect a diversity of beliefs and are sensitive to modesty, homeschooling, blah blah. If this idiot thinks some obvious dude in a dress wants to watch her divulge her deepest secrets to a group of close-knot friends around a campfire, she's the biggest, most sheltered moron alive.

*I would also like to point out that Girl Scout dads can register... or grandpas for that matter! Of course, there are separate sleeping arrangements, but a dad is always welcome! Girl Scouts empowers girls and women... but the organization would NEVER allow for a girl to miss out because she, say.. doesn't have a mom. So if there is a mom and me sleepover, according to this, should the motherless girl not go because it might threaten the sanctity of *her* Girl Scouting experience?

Thanks to this chick, I now have a legitimate reason to purchase and indulge in my Tagalongs and Samoas (or whatever the hell they're called these days).

Girl Scouts is a very feminist group, although we try to keep it a secret. I hope the open-minded people out there will buy enough cookies to make up for the loss in fundie sales; somehow, I think they will.

My Grandpa was the leader of my Mom's Brownie troop. They had their pictures taken in their uniforms and everything! Do troop leaders still have actual uniforms?

This makes me feel better about considering buying cookies from 6 of Sevy's cookie-selling friends. Must mention this to Sev when he gets home. He'll like the absurdity of the girl's claim. I think they are mixing up sex and gender. Especially when it concerns a kid.. kids aren't interested in sex. gender, perhaps, IMHO. But that is only my 2 cents and I'm far from qualified to make a claim lol.

It's bugging the hell out of me that she keeps using male pronouns and the phrase "transgender BOYS." It makes her sound like she really doesn't know what she's talking about. (Surprise!) I know 14-year-olds are plenty old enough to have strong opinions about things, but this video really strikes me as having an adult behind it.

Also, a cis girl not wanting trans girls in the GSUSA due to fears for her safety is a fantastic example of missing the goddamn point. (See also: Irony.)

I guess I'll be buying EXTRA cookies from my sister this year! :)

I couldn't even get through the video. The ignorance, it burns.

On a happier note, I intend to purchase a metric fuckton of samoas and thin mints. Already stalking the grocery store where my local scouts normally sell cookies.

I refuse to boycott Girl Scout cookies for two reasons:

1) I think that girl is bat crap crazy and should not freak out over whether someone is a transgender or not. I'm sure she would be offended if Girl Scouts asked her if she's biologically a woman, so don't be a hypocrite.

2) I love my samoas and thin mints waaaaay too much to boycott them.

Nope, sorry. Girl Scouts, because of that video, I am going to buy more boxes from you!

Now I want samoas. and thin mints. right now.

I really like the Girl Scouts. I had a wonderful experience as a Junior, and I'm glad to see that the GSA is on board with being sensitive to girls from varying backgrounds, as well as issues of gender identity, religion, and sexual orientation.

It's such a contrast to the Boy Scouts, which I'm sorry to say I cannot support due to their homophobia and religious discrimination. :(

Ugh, this girl comes across as a complete B. Nobody is going to boycott girl scout cookies no matter what they believe about gay people. GS cookies rock.

THISSSSSS. FOREVER.

Somebody made a great point in a response video: "If anyone were to pull this kid's pants down - and that's the ONLY way that anyone would ever know that she's a girl - then HELL yeah, that's an unsafe environment!"

The idea of adults freaking out over what's in a child's pants is beyond squicky to me.

I normally don't buy cookies. But I will this year and also write a letter to GSUS telling them why.

I just went from hella-guilt over ordering eight boxes (one in each flavor) to euphoria that I did.

I'm so proud I was a Girl Scout!

Long time lover of FJ, spordic poster (but i knew PP's first name so I passed the security question!)

First, no boy will EVER ask this girl out on a date if she continues with this militant attitude.

Second, just because something is happening in one state doesn't mean it will become widespread. It is illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey, but you don't see residents of other states getting all huffy about it.

Third, where are her badges? IIRC, you get a star pin for each year of scouting, at the end of the school year. She already has one cadette pin, meaning she's in her second year of cadettes (or have the rules changed since I was a scout?). And no, she didn't cover them up with duct tape, like she did with her troop numbers.

Ohh, found a rebuttal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey8tWsyL ... re=related

As a former Girl Scout (Silver & Gold Award recipient, hell yes!), this is just disgusting to see a fellow Girl Scout spreading hatred.

The Girl Scouts are an amazing organization; I joined in Kindergarten and stayed a member until I graduated high school. The other girls in my troop became my closest friends and I still keep in touch with some of them, years later. The Girls Scouts have always been very tolerant and accepting and, in my experience, always making every girl feel welcome and appreciated. I loved my time as a Girl Scout! To see a girl in uniform being so close-minded makes me upset, but like others, I have a feeling she's being a mouthpiece for her bigoted parents.

And she says transgendered girls are a threat to safety? To quote someone on my friend's facebook (where I first saw this article), "Have you ever been around teenaged girls? They're a threat to safety!"

Come to think of it, the Girl Scouts' message of "Girls can do anything!" is most likely the primary reason why conservatives are always freaking out about them. I seem to remember accusations of them promoting a "socialist agenda" in the past few years, because of encouraging girls to get involved in their local community.

To someone who asked about leader uniforms...I joined the Girl Scouts in 1991 and I remember the leader uniforms consisting of a polo shirt with GIRL SCOUT LEADER embroidered on it. My leaders only wore them occasionally heh.

And HELL YES I am buying some cookies this year to go against this stupid boycott! Good to see how popular Thin Mints and Samoas are! Anyone else freeze Thin Mints and eat them that way?

Edited for grammar

Hmm seems like there's a pregnant mama here who is going to order AN ENTIRE CASE OF TAGALONGS PERHAPS 2. That's right. I'll just freeze the fuckers.
