Haboob Hit The Midwest

There was an intense dust storm that moved through the Upper Midwest (IA, SD, NE, and MN) Thursday. And there is actually a name for what happened too. The NWS said they can occur anywhere but usually occur in the Southwest.

Dubuque Got 24.3 Inches of Snow

According to the City of Dubuque, the area received 24.3 inches of snow over the past few days. I feel bad now.  The majority of the snow all went south of the Twin Cities so the Metro didn't even receive two inches. Where I live we got about .5 to .8 inches of snow. And over the next few days it's supposed to get quite cold even before wind chill is figured in.  Sunday they're saying a high of zero and a low of -8, with it getting much colder in northern Minnesota.  I'm k

Midwest Really Getting Hit Now

Over the past couple weeks Iowa has been getting hit with a whole shitload of snow.  Last week the Dubuque area received just over a foot of snow.  And they've been getting really hammered the past few hours with eastern Iowa experiencing blizzard conditions. Up here in the Twin Cities we mostly missed out on the worst of it, with the heavier stuff all down in Iowa and southern Minnesota.  Right now it looks like the Metro is going to get one to three inches of snow between tonight an

50th Anniversary of the 1973 Blizzard

My cousin turned 50 years old today.  And over today and the next few days we have the 50th anniversary of one of the worst Iowa blizzards on record.  Something my parents and their siblings talk about even now. As I understand it my mom worked as a nurse at the time and she wound up not being able to go home for a few days because she and dad were pretty much stuck.  She worked at the local Mercy hospital and he was on the farm and they were both stuck where they were.  They had winds of u

Warm Up Coming

It's cold and blustery out today.  The temperature is about 35° but it feels like it's half that right now.  Trucks on I-35 are having some issues because of the wind out in the open country.  In the coming days it's supposed to be a different story in both the Twin Cities and Dubuque.  Sunday it's supposed to be 63° in Minneapolis and 70° down in Dubuque.  Might get up into the 80s down in Dubuque next week and someone at work was saying she heard the Twin Cities might also hit the 80s nex

Active Night

Waking up this morning we found several new inches of snow on the ground.  It had already been coming down really hard last night when I got home.  Here's what the non-sharpiefied NWS said about the snowfall totals. So I probably got close to about 8.5 inches as I'm near MSP.  So I won't be doing as much riding.  I might head down and do a few laps in the garage given that my bike is new and I want to ride it a bit.   They're still saying it's going to get up into the 30s an

Midwest Getting Hit by Storms

Both Iowa and Minnesota are getting hit by storms now.  Down in Iowa it's severe thunderstorms complete with tornadoes.  Family and friends are all heading to shelter in eastern Iowa due to the tornado warnings and the like.  Meanwhile up here in Minnesota we're about to get pummeled by more winter weather.  We have a mix of winter storms and blizzards due to hit us tonight into tomorrow.   Most winters I expect winter to have one last blast in late March or early April whether I'm in Iowa

Mount Eden Prairie

There's a pile of snow cleared in a Target parking lot here in the Twin Cities it has been named Mount Eden Prairie. It's also been called Mount Target and one Minnesota woman painted a picture of Minnesota's most famous mound of snow.  Experts think it'll stick around until mid May. I can believe that.  I worked at a manufacturing plant that was over a mile long with an almost equally long parking lot so they had quite the snow piles which wouldn't disappear until May or even the fi

Twin Cities Had Just Over 80 Inches of Snow This Season

Here in the Twin Cities we broke the 80" marker for total snowfall, making it the 8th snowiest season on record. The most the Twin Cities received on record was 98.6" in the 1983/84 season.  I hope that we're done with snow for the season but it would not surprise me at all if we weren't.  Both Iowa and Minnesota have had some nasty winter storms in April.  The Twin Cities could move up one or maybe even two more spots in amount received even if we just get as much as they're predict

Winter Storm to Ring In the New Year

Looks like we're in for a few days of it now. It looks like I'm right at the freezing rain/heavy snow border here in the Twin Cities.  I got back to Minneapolis just as the weather was starting to hit today.  Glad I got back when I did.

Fornicate. Winter is coming.

Yeah, looks like winter is coming to the upper Midwest.  Fornicate. Looks like North Dakota is getting the brunt but winter is also hitting Montana, South Dakota, and parts of northwest Minnesota.  One of my FB friends from law school lives in SW Minnesota so I got a message out to her asking how the weather is out there.  I'm not ready for winter yet.  Ugh,

Summer clocked out at the end of her shift

It’s been cooler up here these past few days. And now we have a frost alert coming  Well my plants are pretty much done for so I don’t have to worry about that now.  I hope it stays decent for a while yet   Leaves have definitely started turning up here and I’m having to wear thicker jackets if I rode in the morning or after work. I still need to get a thicker riding coat as I had to throw my old one out last April.

A Hot One in the Midwest

Yeah, it's nice and hot up here in the Midwest.  Right now in Minnesota it's coming up on 8:00pm and it's still in the upper 90s.  It's actually warmer here in Minnesota right now than it is in Iowa. It's supposed to be a bit cooler tomorrow, then it looks like temps will be up in the 90s until Saturday when it's going to be about 78.  Last night I glanced at my Lenovo alarm clock a couple times and it was the middle of the night and it was still in the high 80s. Honest truth

Just Wait a Few Days

The old saying is if one doesn't like the weather in Iowa just wait a few days. We're not in the part of Iowa that's under a watch but my sister is down in Waukee.

Meanwhile in Minneapolis

Yeah we got hit up in the Twin Cities this evening; I got home to find the joint still intact and with electrical power so I'm relieved.

Spring showed up this week

It got up into the 80s yesterday.  We had some storms though and some hail.  Glad my vehicle was in its parking spot in the garage when the storms came through.  For the rest of this week we're supposed to see lows in the upper 50s to highs close to 90 with some storms in the mix.  Got the windows wide open now even though I live under a final approach for MSP.

Yeah We're Getting Hammered

And I don't mean hammered as in getting drunk either. NWS is expecting about a foot of snow around here. Right now it's not doing much of anything out.  Just cold and windy.  It'll be a good day to stay in tomorrow and just camp out at home.

Looks Like We're Getting Hammered This Week

Today was fairly nice out, with mostly sunny skies and the temp getting up to about 45 F.  Looks like we're about to pay for it though.  Both with more snow and temps nose-diving. I'm glad my new gig is 100% remote since it'll enable me to just stay home the next few days.

Snow totals

We wound up getting about three inches in the SW Minneapolis area where I'm staying right now.  I talked to my mom this morning for a bit and she said they got a couple inches yesterday.  Down in the Des Moines area where my sister lives they got about a foot of snow.  Even though it snowed pretty much all day yesterday traffic was humming right along up here.  Not like other areas of the country where so much as a dusting is enough to shut down an area.  It's sunny out today up here b

Another January Snowstorm

Had some snow today up in the Twin Cities. Iowa also had a bit of snow today as well with eastern Iowa getting about to 1 to 6 inches of snow.  I didn't have any trouble getting to or from work today even with the weather hitting the fan.  Supposed to be clear out tomorrow but it a bit colder.  Depending on what the mortgage and realtor say tomorrow might go looking at some more places tomorrow.  Regardless I'm going to try to sleep in a bit tomorrow morning.

Brrr

Current temperature in Bloomington  I'd rather have this than a Branch Trumpvidian government, hands down. I changed the name of the blog since I'll be doing more Minnesota weather reports.  I'll still do Iowa when I go back to visit or if I hear of weather stuff there.

After the New Year's Storm

We're in the process of digging ourselves out of the snow.  Dad said we had a little over four inches at the farm yesterday.  Looks like a lot of places here in Iowa did get that six inches the weatherman promised Friday night.  Couple spots even got close to 8 inches.  Brother backed out at the last minute on taking me to church this morning so mom did.  Which caused issues cause they wanted to go to their own church at the same time.  Mom wound up taking me and dad met her at their church

Active New Year's Coming

Looks like this weekend will be snowy in Iowa So we appear to be in the 4 to 7 inch band.  Southern Iowa it looks like they'll get almost a foot.  Of course in reality we'll have anywhere from a trace to 99 inches of snow.  Right now it looks like we'll get hit on Saturday and it'll be clear out on Sunday.

When you’re drawing on the weather map it’s probably a good idea to avoid phallic looking stuff.

It's Not Over Yet

Iowa is about to get hit with the winter storm that hit the Rockies not too long ago.  Right now it looks like we're getting several inches of snow over the next couple days.  I cut my job interview trip short and started to head back home, I'll have to do the interview on zoom.  I was looking forward to meeting my potential new employer in person and checking out the town too.  Ugh.  Here in the upper Midwest it always seems like winter has one last blast before giving up and letting sprin
