Pray Away the Gay counselor has gay dating profiles

A conversion therapy proponent/therapist was found to have active profiles on two gay dating sites (Manhunt and Gay Bear Nation) and was outed by an organization called Truth Wins Out, according to the Advocate web site.

Conversion Therapy Proponent Caught Trolling for Gay Men on Manhunt

Spoiler

A therapist at Horizon Psychological Services who claimed he could change clients’ sexual orientation sought gay sex partners on Manhunt and kept an account on Bear Nation, according to the non-profit Truth Wins Out.

“Norman Goldwasser’s double life of unconscionable lies highlights the rank hypocrisy and predatory nature of the fraudulent ‘ex-gay’ industry,” said Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen. “We urge every state to ban the scourge of conversion therapy that attacks the mental health of LGBT youth and puts them in harms way.”

Goldwasser, an Orthodox Jewish provider of conversion therapy services, advertises on his website that he and a team of professionals at his Miami Beach practice will help clients with the healing of trauma. He has also sent clients to the so-called "Manhood" program that sends gay or questioning men off into the woods to engage in "manly" activities with the intent of ensuring they emerge with a heterosexual identity, according to Truth Wins Out.

“He helps patients to understand and process the ways in which painful or frightening events continue to impact present functioning,” the website reads. “Dr. Goldwasser works with individuals whose trauma histories have led to addictions, anxiety, and mood disorders, as well as difficulties in relationships.”

But Truth Wins Out found Goldwasser’s own “present functioning” including looking to score with other men. An undercover agent with the organization found Goldwasser under the profile “Hotnhairy72.” Using the fake name Dave, he set up a time to meet for sex with an undercover operative at a Fort Lauderdale motel, Truth Wins Out claims.

Truth Wins Out said it only outs members of the “ex-gay” movement who demonstrate hypocrisy, profit from it or present harm to LGBT youth. Goldwasser meets all tests, the group said.

“Goldwasser can’t claim his personal life is none of our business when trying to ‘cure’ LGBT people is his business,” Besen wrote in a statement. “Here is a case where a charlatan is committing consumer fraud by misleading clients and adversely affecting their mental health. We are particularly concerned when Goldwassser’s scam preys on young people susceptible to his charade.”

Goldwasser co-wrote a 2006 paper with David Matheson entitled “Holistic Therapy: A Comprehensive, Clinical Approach to the Treatment of SSA.”

He also directed clients to such gay conversion programs as Journey Into Manhood.

Organization leaders released information on the conversion therapist in conjunction with the release of  “Boy Erased," the film that stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Russell Crowe and tells the story of author Garrard Conley's battle in a conversion therapy program.

While posting about Goldwasser's hypocrisy, Truth Wins Out took the opportunity to demand states still allowing the practice on minors to pass statutes barring such treatments, while noting even those states that already prohibit the therapy include loopholes for religious providers.

Here's the tweet where he begs the person who is going to be exposing his hypocrisy to not do so, because he has a family to support.

This sounds like a discreet way to meet new dating prospects.

Agree.  In this scenario there would be every possibility that this guy was "praying" on his patients.  Being outed may just be the tip of the iceberg for this sleazebag's double life.

I'm surprised he didn't try to claim the profiles were for "research" or to scout potential victims converts.  Though I guess the username hotnhairy72 doesn't really sound like research or scouting.

On a more general note, funny how many sexual scandals/uncomfortable revelations pop up around the guys who are the most invested in standing up for "traditional family values," isn't it?

Well, if you're totally okay with being gay, what kind of scandal is there going to be? "Openly gay man goes on gay date and has gay sex" isn't exactly going to make headlines.

That sounds fair to me.  Be gay, be straight, whatever, it's your business, and I really don't care.  I draw the line when you start telling other people to do what you can't/won't do yourself.

Well just as long as it was good old meth, and not the devil's lettuce!

Within the group of godly men with gay inclinations, at least Ted confessed to being bi-sexual and having attraction to men. He's supposedly back to being faithful to his wife, while understanding that he is bi-sexual, but not acting on his attraction to men.  I see this in the realm of possibility, the same as any monogamous couple.

And the gay prostitute?  They did a lot more than smoke meth.

@Howl, absolutely, they did a lot more than smoke meth. Last I heard, Ted Haggard and his wife were still together. I hope he has been faithful to her since. I strongly doubt that he has enough thoughtfulness to take a more compassionate stance toward the LGBT community.

He's "inclusive" towards LGBT people in his new church, but does not believe in gay marriage, because, presumably, man/woman. Hypocrisy.  He's bi-sexual, so can have a sexual relationship in the socially approved zone, but does not have sufficient empathy to understand how painful it would be to for gay people to have a loving partner who they cannot marry.  It's kind of a moot point now, because gay marriage is legal.

So here are some things I wouldn't do if I was a gay conversion therapist: look for hook ups on gay dating sites. And in the event that was unavoidable, here are some more things I wouldn't do: use my actual name and location or my photo.

What an idiot.

And his screen name?

http://deadstate.org/psychologist-who-promotes-ex-gay-therapy-found-looking-for-hookups-on-gay-dating-app/

Using the screen name “hotnhairy72,” Goldwasser shared nude images of himself and listed interests such as “kissing,” “massage,” and “married men,” among other more sexually explicit ones.

I am not gonna go looking to see if one of these images was of him wide-stancing it in an airport shit house.

Obviously, this guy had zero problems with cognitive dissonance.

I was actually thinking of the Commodores' "Brick House," but I'm not as good at parody lyrics as some of y'all.

In the shit...house
In his tighty-whities, he's lettin' it all bulge out
In the shit ...house
That dude is whacked, and that's a fact
He likes to go bareback

In the shit...house

Yeah most reich wingers usually don't have that hang up with cognitive dissonance.

And it seems I've created a shit house monster.

To think it's been over 11 years since Larry Craig widestanced his way in to glory.

 Larry “Wide Stance” Craig

He is my favorite gay-hypocrite. During a slow period at work me and a colleague did a reconstruction of how a wide a stance one would have to have to been accidentally seen by another person and even presuming a very small booth that would mean severe problems with also getting your genitals on the right level to actually pee almost regardless of what you do. The only way it can reasonably work is a wide stance a bit to the side of the toilet, like an uneven wide stance with just one leg but that isn't really a wide stance, just a really weird position. The only way a wide stance would work is if you are very tall but it still seems very uncomfortable to pee like that anyway. (Yes, of course he totally lied but we decided to test just how much. The now former colleague and I even used "wide stance" as a euphemism for lying among each other)

Yeah one time at work I was in the can and I realized if I wide stanced it as much as he would’ve had to in order to reach the next stall I probably would have torn something.

Oh yes, dear old Ted!  I was raised on rock & roll and I listened to a lot of Ted Nugent as a teenager.  I actually met him once, he was ok and not as tall as I expected.  But as an adult, I realize what a sleaze he is.  I got rid of my records years ago, but I'm pretty sure I had most of his.  Which I would probably burn if I still had them!

Also, one of the Takei facebook pages has now picked up the story. I think it was on George's page but his husband Brad posts a lot of the same things on his page.
