My Painted Rocks

Recommended Posts

Hi friends! I have mentioned my painted rocks on here before and I know @Jellybean especially was interested in them. They are part of the community kindness rocks project, where you paint rocks to hide around the community for people to find. On the back you list your club's info and the instructions to post a picture of the rock when it's found. Then the finder can either keep it or re-hide it somewhere else.

Most of mine don't get posted but they are a lot of fun to do. And you don't have to be an artist to do them! I've gotten a lot of ideas just from Googling. There are so many talented people out there! Here are some of mine from the past, along with my current batch to hide on our camping trip this weekend.

There is a group in the Tulsa are that does that.  918 Rocks is the name of the group.  I hope it's ok to mention them.  I am not part of it, my daughter was for a while.  I've seen a few of the rocks in places, it looks like a really fun thing to do and it's across all ages, not just kids.

Your rocks are so pretty!

Thanks everyone! It's such a fun hobby, and especially fun to share with others. I'm a bit of a hoarder and this gives me a way to make art without having piles and piles of paintings! I hope it inspires some of you to paint :)

There's a local group on Facebook where people post rocks they've found - I keep wanting to paint some but haven't gotten around to it.

Do you use acrylic paints and seal them afterward? Any tips? I'm going to be at the beach all next week and it looks like there might be afternoon thunderstorms some days, so that might be a fun activity for my sisters and I to try if we're stuck indoors at any point.

Yes! I  just use the craft paint from Walmart (it's like $1 each) and then seal with this.IMG_2682.JPG

Awesome, thank you! I know I have acrylics (recently found some Liquitex basics at the thrift store for 60 cents, plus I have nicer Liquitex for doll painting), and I have matte sealer but I'm not sure if I have something like that. Should be easy to pick up if we need it, though.
And  your rocks are beautiful!

Thank you @PumaLover! I love seeing your message and your beautiful rocks. I have a whole jar of stones from the beach all ready to be painted and I keep ending up in hospital every time I start to get my creative mojo back! I’m totally inspired (again), so hopefully I’ll be home soon and will have some pics to share

I also paint and participate in Community Kindness Rocks.

Yours are all really good, mine are mezza mezza.

I saw my first painted rock in real life last week and was so excited! I wasn’t the only person excited about it so I couldn’t take a photo, but I wanted to come here and say that it doesn’t matter if your rocks are perfect or just ‘so so’ (in your own opinion) - they make people smile, even in London in the middle of winter when we only have 8 hours (or less) of daylight!

@jellybean that is awesome! I apologize for not posting more. I recently hid a bunch on my trip to Arizona.

My desktop died and I can't afford a new one and I hate posting from my phone. I've been inspired to paint a lot of new rocks and I will see if the phone cooperates. (I'm old school and want everything on a big screen.)

Those are lovely @PumaLover! Sorry about your desktop but welcome to the smartphone-only world — I’m glad you’ve joined me here!

I can’t help feeling just a teensy bit jealous of the people who got to see them in real life. I wanted to pick a favourite but I’ve been looking at them, going back and forth and I love absolutely every one of them!

Thank you for sharing and apologies that it took me so long to come back and see them.

I just got interested in rock painting last year, specifically dots. As of today:

3 books purchased
2 sets of paints purchased
3 painting markers purchased
1 set of brushes purchased
1 set of dotting tools purchased
1 bag o' rocks purchased
1 container of smoothing spackle or whatever purchased, along with one scraping tool
several large rocks given to me
visited many instructional web pages
joined 5 FB groups or pages about rock painting
watched over 25 videos
0 rocks painted (in my defense, I made some 'practice' dots on cardboard ONE TIME)

Apparently I have a problem getting started

@PumaLover's photos have inspired me to drag out all my stuff and look at it
