So, Mom is a hoarder, and perhaps missed the fact she had an expired son in her home.  

Calling out for him with no response, perhaps, for weeks or months?  Even blind, I think I could have found a phone and said "Son is missing."  Read on.

Based on this article it sounds like she though he moved out (and probably cut off contact). She also hadn't had contact with her brother and his family in years.
