RIP Arete

Destiny

It grieves us to share that long time poster and helpmeet @Arete has passed due to complications from cancer.

Arete joined FJ in 2012 and described herself as "I'm in my early 40s, live in the Northeast US, and work as an ebil scientist. Born and raised Greek Orthodox Christian, and still am, got to have my smells and bells in congregational prayer. Politically liberal."

She was glad to provide information about her church, her experiences in gardening, and her Greek family traditions.

In respect for her family's privacy, we won't be sharing any additional details, but we know you will join us in honoring the memory of a graceful woman.

Dammit.  I didn't know she had cancer,  did she mention it and maybe i was too preoccupied with her recipes?    I haven't been here for a long while. I am really saddened by this.  She was a good one.

She was very private about it.  As far as I recall, she did not post about her health much at all.

Online communities are odd - we have such intimate conversations and yet sometimes don't know but one facet of a person.  If tears shed are a measure of love or grief, I would venture to say she was loved immensely. :(

I am still struggling with it, and I don't think I am alone.  I have ordered some Greek basil seeds and am going to grow one . . . and maybe I'll find some people here to give the other seedlings to.

I'm so sorry to read this!  I had no idea that she was sick.

May her memory be eternal.

I always appreciated her posts, her Greek Orthodox perspective, her writing and her general attitude.  She will be missed.

What sad news! I've been on vacation and just now getting the message. My heart and love go to her family and all who loved her.

I haven't been on as much this past summer - I had assumed Arete had, like many of us had a full schedule and couldn't find the time to come online.

I remember her mentioning having some health issues, but did not say cancer to my recollection.

Like so many others she was one of my favorite members, and she always seemed so wise to me.  She had a way of writing that always got her point across without crossing into pure snarkiness.  I forget the exact thread, but I remember her coming to bat for me on a thread years ago, and I appreciated her standing up with me.

40's is so fucking young.  I can only imagine how incredible she was in real life.

RIP

She did not know about the cancer.  She went in for some other health issues and when they got in there, they discovered the cancer that had been masked by the other symptoms :(   I think she only made it about 2 months from her diagnosis.

I talked to her a few days after her surgery and she sounded really good on the phone and said she was ready to fight.

The world has lost an amazing woman, way too young.   I have no doubt she made an impression on everyone she came in contact with.

Hi Arete,

I randomly thought about discussing the Greek debt crisis with you today. I wish you were still around for us to go over it again. Your insights were always sharp and made me think a lot. I appreciated that while Greece and Germany were at odds, you and I could talk. Regardless of what our respective governments were effing up.

I miss your insights, I miss your razor-sharp wit. I miss laughing with you when comparing Greek and Korean families. And I'm a bit miffed at you for leaving. Not for one moment did I believe you wouldn't punch cancer in the face, and make it out hale. That would have been just like you: Strong as granite, with a heart as big as the oceans.

I miss you.

I am just catching up after over 2 years away from FJ, so my thoughts are late but heartfelt.

I’m super boring. My life is probably similar to Jessa’s. But I chose this life. I have the ability to go back to work if I wanted. Or take big trips. But I’m not interested. Sometimes I wonder if Jessa regrets her choice. Does Jessa feel like she has a choice?

Yesterday when Jessa posted to IG, I was thinking about how we haven’t seen Ben in a good, long time. I was also thinking about how Jessa used to be the really outspoken and spunky young adult Duggar (vs Jinger) and now Jessa seemingly has the subdued (boring?) lifestyle, while Jinger is golfing in Scottsdale.

Despite this group being called FreeJINGER, who would have thought that Jessa would have turned into Michelle???

If we had a contest for homes with the funkiest architecture, mine would be right up there. I live on a hill, near the ocean (so think tight, narrow lots) and my home is tri-level but only has living space on 2 floors. From the front of the house one would take 2 short flights of stairs and would enter the house on the second level (where there is no living space) and onto a platform. From there, one could go down a 1/2 flight of stairs to a bedroom, BR and a garage. If you went up a 1/2 flight of stairs from the front door, you would get to the rest of the house. We made it an open floor plan when we remodeled our kitchen, which had been tucked away behind 2 weird walls. The biggest issue with our house is having to lug everything upstairs, the rooms are narrow,  and the fact that there is limited wall space. Our backyard is accessible from our top floor. Also the street behind our house is at the top of the hill, so they look down on our house. Our house looks down on the houses across the street. Basically our house is built up the hill, while the houses on the other side of the street are built down the hill.

And for all you folks living in either snow country or in hades, you have my sympathy.

For anyone who knows an ice storm is coming and doesn’t have a garage, they make covers for your windshield.

I can’t imagine street parking over night all winter; how does your car start without being plugged in? Here the engine would freeze.
My area is kind of the opposite of cookie cutter. The colours and design couldn’t be the same as houses beside or across the street from each other.

Where I live the engine won't freeze if you leave your car out all night in winter. But I was soooo tired of scraping the windshield every morning at 6:30. That was one of my main reasons for wanting a garage.

We're lucky because we have other protected spaces for storing things like the lawnmower, snowblower,  yard decor, etc. So the garage is just for the cars.
