RIP Arete

Destiny

It grieves us to share that long time poster and helpmeet @Arete has passed due to complications from cancer.

Arete joined FJ in 2012 and described herself as "I'm in my early 40s, live in the Northeast US, and work as an ebil scientist. Born and raised Greek Orthodox Christian, and still am, got to have my smells and bells in congregational prayer. Politically liberal."

She was glad to provide information about her church, her experiences in gardening, and her Greek family traditions.

In respect for her family's privacy, we won't be sharing any additional details, but we know you will join us in honoring the memory of a graceful woman.

I did not know her, but my heart goes out to all her were blessed by her presence on this earth.  Their lives were obviously better for having had her in their lives.

This is so sad :pb_sad:.  I am really going to miss her posts - she was always so thoughtful, articulate, and intelligent, and she could dish up the classiest snark.

I hope her family, friends, and those who love her are able to find peace in their grief.  The world lost a wonderful person.

As a lurker, the first thing I noticed was how she kept it smart and classy even when a thread got a ugly.  The second was her recipes.  My FJ experience will be less without her.  Prayers and condolences to her friends and family, both virtual and in the flesh.

Oh no. No, no, no. I'm away for a few days and come back to this.

When I had to say goodbye to my beloved cat last November, Arete wrote to me "cry for JubeJube - she deserves it". I am crying for you, Arete, for your beautiful, generous and funny spirit.

I hope your funeral has all the bells and smells you could have wished for. Rest in Peace.

Ah, I'm so sorry to hear this. Cancer is so hard, both for the one diagnosed and for everyone near and dear to the one battling it.

Arete was clever and insightful. I've always enjoyed her posts over the years, and the many contributions she brought to the discussions we've all had here. She will be greatly missed.

I'm wishing her family and friends hope, love, and healing during this time. Rest in peace, Arete. You have your beautiful angel wings now.  :my_angel:

What a shock to see this notice after logging in for the first time in a while. I was unaware that Arete was ill.  This is incredibly sad and difficult to grasp. My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved her.  I can only imagine what a great lady she was in real life having enjoyed her posts so much here.   She will truly be missed.

Dammit.  I didn't know she had cancer,  did she mention it and maybe i was too preoccupied with her recipes?    I haven't been here for a long while. I am really saddened by this.  She was a good one.

Surely they could get a swing set second hand and at least get out in their backyard. I have a basic one that I got free on give away weekend.  My daughter loves sending her dolls down the slide. She needs to get outside for her own mental health. Buy some sidewalk chalk and let Spurgie through Fern go nuts.

Sorry I can’t help but see so many fundie women turning out 2 ways when they become adults: The first are the fundie women who grew up being sister moms who got used to being perpetually exhausted and just became fundie wives in the same situation as a wife. And the second is the fundie princess. Who was raised sheltered, isolated, and thinking she’s better and more special than everyone else because god. Examples are Braggie and Jill Rod. I wouldn’t be surprised if Haley is a fundie princess. Just a guess.

NOPE on making kids responsible for other kids’ safety- that is a huge recipe for disaster and the need for lifelong therapy.

That honeymoon cannot have been cheap. To leave so early, man that's a huge waste.

That they'd be willing to waste such money to leave early says a lot about how badly it was going.

Or that she’s young and over privileged and doesn’t care she wasted her parents’ money.

Plus how do you get them all out of the car without somebody running into the street/parking lot?

Parentalize the older ones to look after the younger ones? It’s the Duggar way!
