Me and my girls

I'm still going through old emails and while I am normally loathe to post a picture that contains even a small part of me in it, I decided that this one that my husband snapped while I was napping was an exception.   The girls mostly love the recliner because there is room for all of them to fit comfortably without having to lay on top of each other or too close to each other like they did when they all wanted in my lap in a desk chair.    They all get along really well and will cuddle up with

Picture of the Day ~ 11.25.15

I wasn't going to start posting holidayish type pages just yet, but since I mentioned the book this one is from in my Coloring Books post this morning, I decided to go ahead and post one.   This was done with paper mate felt tip pens.   Don't look at it *too* closely because I did this one while in the car/at dr. appts, so there are a few little foibles in it.    I never realized how bumpy our roads are until I started trying to color in the car

Rilers is so helpful

I was going through some old emails to save the attachments I want to keep and found this picture of Riley (a/k/a EVUL) helping my husband fill out his NCAA bracket last year.

Coloring Supplies ~ Coloring Books ~ Part 2

Today I'm going to continue with notes about various coloring books I have.   If you have any questions about a particular book, I'll be happy to dig it out and answer specifics. I'm trying a different way of linking this post, so you can see prices and it's clear that it's an amazon (affiliate) link.    Let me know what you think in the comments.   I'm normally not too "Christmasy," but this book was done by my favorite author so I had to get it.  I didn't pay attention when ordering it, j

This was done with colored pencils.  I wish I'd one it in marker though because the hair is more greyish than a nice solid black, which is what I envisioned when I saw this picture.   The teal is my first prismacolor colored pencil single and I like it, but I'm not sure that I feel the need to upgrade to artists grade pencils.   I do like that I can pick up colors that I need more of or don't have a particular shade of, though.

Picture of the Day ~ 11.23.15

This was a quick little page to do.  It was done in colored pencil and I have no idea why some of the colors aren't showing up properly in the scan.  The kitty was done in grey.  I can't recall what the teardrop that isn't showing up was

We've been talking about various markers in the comments on the FJ Colorists Unite blog, so I wanted to post this page which I did using my new prismacolor and copic markers.   I also used sharpies because I only ordered a few of the other 2 since they are more expensive and I didn't know if I would like them or not. Of course, I love them, so I will be slowly adding to my collection.  The yellow and the bright pinks are sharpies.   I don't remember all of which is which, but the green "leaves"

This is one of the few pages where I have used both markers/pens and colored pencil.  The butterflies are all done in marker/gel pens and the background is colored pencil.   This was one of my earlier pages, so I didn't have as many options for either pens or pens.   I thought the background would be too hard to do in gel pens, but I've since learned you can do pretty large backgrounds just fine with pens/markers.    Now that I have bigger tubs for both types, it's hard for me to mix mediums due

This one was done in colored pencil.   I'm not sure why sometime my oranges appear pretty much white (like the flower thingy at the bottom middle). It's funny that I just noticed that those actually look like leaves around those bits.  When I was coloring it, I didn't notice that at all or probably would have colored things different.    The leafy parts on the bottom left and top right are done in one of my favorite colored pencils, the metallic green from crayola.  The scan does not really do

This was one of the first pages I colored.  I didn't have a great selection of pens at that time and while I like the idea of the black background, in practice I'm less impressed because it looks so streaky.  I like how the smaller elements turned out though.

Just another coloring book/crayons picture.  I was happy to find this one because I love flamingos.    I just noticed that my tree "leaves" look weird with the abrupt square filling in on the right and top.   I'm not sure what I was thinking when I colored it that way.

Coloring Supplies ~ Gel Pens ~ Part 2

Originally the gel pens post was not supposed to have 2 parts, but when I was looking up the links to the pens I already had I had a little...uh...problem.  I found a whole bunch of gel pens I hadn't seen before, so in the interest of keeping you all informed about the coloring supplies I *had* to order them so I could let you know how they work. It's not an addiction.  It's for science! So here is part 2 of gel pens.   Sakura 37460 10-Piece Gelly Roll Blister Card Assorted Color Medium Poin

It's hard to be a Chihuahua

Below is a picture of my eldest Chihuahua, Tequla.  She wanted me to post to show you all how incredibly hard it is to live with me.  She is very put upon and wants you all the see her struggle!  Being the good dog slave that I am, I followed orders!

This was an experiment in oil pastel "crayons."    They were interesting and I can see the potential in them, however they do not have a pointy tip so I have trouble using them in areas that aren't large.    Here I used them on the big stars and rainbows and then switched to markers for the rest of the picture. It's hard to see all the nuances in the scan, unfortunately.   I laid down whatever lighter color I wanted, then added a darker color of the same or a similar color (like yellow, then or

This is the "elephants" page I mentioned a bit ago and someone said they wanted to see it.   I can't remember who and can't find the comment I made now, but here it is.   This was done in colored pencil. I was originally going to do the elephants in grey and decided that was boring, so managed to overcome my first instinct to make them "realistic" and made them different colors. I'm not thrilled with the grey in the background.  I think green might have looked better in hindsight or even black

This was done with colored pencils and is one of the few (only perhaps) where I actively used shading rather than just straight coloring and calling it a day. I generally like the way it turned out and want to try shading more in the future.  I'm not super fond of the colors I used on the bigger butterfly.   I started out with a specific idea about what I wanted to do and then realized I was one color short for it to work right

This did not turn out as well as I'd hoped.   I did this one on "dr. day" so only had a small selection of markers with me.  I usually take my Paper Mate Felt Tip Pens when I go out because they have all the basic colors and it's easy to just grab all of them out of my pen tub. I wish I hadn't been so adamant about finishing this one with *only* the felt tips because I think some of the colors blend together a little too much.   I'm not sure if I like the birds al

Another kid's coloring book with crayons page.   I love me some Winnie the Pooh (who is obviously a boy!).   I tried to randomize the flower colors a little, but pretty much failed at that, I think.

This was one of my relatively early pages.   The dots were slightly crazy-making, but I just tried to vary them so it looked random and not too uniform. This was done with mostly gel pens, but the backgrounds on the butterflies are felt tip markers.  I have no idea why the green one has the weird light spots in it.  The original is not like that.   This is from the book:

This one took me quite a while to finish.  I ended up taking a break form it and doing something else about 1/2 way through because I wasn't "feeling" it and ended up just staring at it trying to figure out what to color. I used a metallic black for the background and I wish I had used a straight black because it ended up looking more silver/grey than black.   This is from the book:

Artist Spotlight ~ Thaneeya McArdle

Today I thought I would do something different and talk about my favorite coloring book author, Thaneeya McArdle.   Her designs are extremely fun to color and her books have a few pages of helpful hints in the front of each one. She uses really bright, vibrant colors for all her work, which I really like. She has a personal artist website, thanyeea.com and her coloring site Art is Fun Her Art is Fun site really makes coloring and art, in general, reliable to the "average" person, IMO.   She o

This was the second picture I colored from an adult coloring book.  This is one of the few (maybe the only) picture where I combined colored pencils, gel pens and markers.  I'll be honest and say this is not one of my favorites.  I was too caught up trying to keep it semi-realistic colors and I don't think I did it justice. You will also note that something wet was set on the page while I was working on it and the front leg smeared    I have a policy of not settin

Someone mentioned buying the Creative Cats coloring book, so I thought I'd share one of the pages I did from that book. Now that you've read about color theory, you can probably start seeing how I combine colors.   I tend to do pretty much the same color combinations in every page.   I do tend toward cool colors. It's a bit hard to see in the scan, but the kitty in this one is various shades of grey.   This was done with colored pencils.

Yesterday I talked about color theory and mentioned that if you use colors that are too similar for an entire page that it may turn out boring.   That doesn't have to be the case, though. When I saw this guy, I immediately knew I wanted him to be all green.   I used to not particularly care for green, but in the last couple years I've become really fond of it, so was excited to see what I could do with this turtle. Even though he's all gre
