Picture of the Day ~ 12.19.15

Another holiday picture today.   I really had fun with this one.  The wings are Sakura gel pens, except for the hearts, which are just some generic red gel pen.  The dress is mainly my new expensive markers from my recent blick order.   The green in dress is called avocado and it's a prismacolor marker.  The little green leaf bits in the star row are lime zest by Winston&Newton.   Unfortunately, those are the only 2 I remember specifically.   The silver in the dress is also a Sakura g

This is another page from the Awesome Animals book, to give folks another idea of what type of designs are in it.   Once again, the scan doesn't really do it justice.  The hot dogs look a little better in the original, I think.   This one was super fun because I really like being able to do the "rainbow" type stuff.  Figuring out what to do in the background was the hardest part.   I didn't want something "busy" because the paws/bones were pretty busy as it was, but I also didn't want a s

I had so. much. fun! doing this page.  I used markers, felt tip pens and gel pens.   I love these little block/quilt type pages because you can just do whatever in each block and they don't really have to be related in any way.    When confronted with areas that have x number of spaces, I tend to default to a rainbow look, as you can see here. The scan doesn't really do it justice, as usual.  The "rainbow" areas that are backed with black really pop a lot more in the original.

Coloring Supplies ~ Markers ~ Part 1

Today I thought I would talk about the various markers I have.   Markers come in a lot of different tip styles.  The most common are ultra fine, fine, brush, bullet and chisel.   I am not a fan of the chisel tip, but according to everything I read they are supposed to be great because they are like 3, 3, 3 tips in one.   I still dislike them and even though I keep giving them a try I have gained no love of them. You do have to be careful with markers because many

I've been posting a lot of pen/marker stuff lately, so thought I would post this colored pencil one.   The scan doesn't particularly do this one justice.  It looks a bit "muddy" to me in the scan because the colors are a couple shades lighter in the scan than the original for some reason.    The green butterflies between the pink and orange ones are just flat out ugly in the scan for some reason, which is disappointing. I had fun doing this one though.  I loves me

I thought I'd start posting some of the holiday pages I've colored, though I'll be showing them throughout the year, I suspect.   This one was done with Staedtler and Stablio markers, I am pretty sure.   As an aside, I finally figured out what I can "journal" about.  I need to start keeping track of what pictures are from what book and what medium I used on them because it's getting hard to remember them all. I did this one on a "dr day," so don't look too closely

I really had fun with this one.   It's done with Pilot Frixon pens and new pens I got from my blick order.   The area in the palm  that looks whitish is actually a very light pastel green in the original.

I had fun with this one.  It's one of the first ones where I tried making things symmetrical vs coloring each butterfly/flower/etc a different color.  It was done mostly with felt tips and other markers.   I like the way it turned out, but in hindsight I wish I'd have either switched the blues (darker in the middle/lighter on the outside) or used 2 different colors for the center and outside background.    I feel like it's very in-your-face BLUE the way it is now and somewhat detracts fro

Since we are sorta talking about trees on the Colorists blog, this page caught my eye when trying to decide what to make my Picture of the Day today.   This was done mostly with felt tip pens and sharpies.   The areas in the main and tail that look essentially white are very light yellow and the leaves are very light greens (damn you scans!). This one was fun, but I didn't have a desire for lots of tiny parts for a while after coloring in all the leaves   &#

Crafts

Since I have crafts in the title, I decided I would share some of the stuff I have made semi-recently.   I uploaded a bunch of pictures to my album, so if you are interested you can view them there. It's mostly crocheted items that I made for my vet when she was pregnant.  She was having a girl and I may or may not have gotten a little carried away with making stuff for her (I think I did something like 75 items lol) I also have included a

@Fascinated has mentioned the Sargent Art gel pens recently.   This is a page I did with just the metallic set, when I first got it.  They are really pretty in person, but you can't tell the metallic very well in this scan.   They are definitely one of my favorite gel pens.

I took a page out of  @Tikobaby's book with this one.   I mostly like it, but I wish I'd done a couple things differently.   I'm not fond of the blue eyes on ALL of them.  I wish I'd used maybe gold or at least varied their eye color on each seahorse.   I'm also not thrilled with my color choices on the yellow one.  It's a little better looking in the scan, actually.   On the real one, the yellow I used on the head/belly is kind of a dark, icky yellow.  I'd almost call it like a "urine" y

I'm going to be skipping the weekend (5th and 6th) for pictures of the day since the site will be down for maintenance. This one was done with several different new packages of gel pens I had just gotten, so each flower is actually a different color.   Some of them look pretty similar, but in reality one is glitter/metallic and one is not, etc.    I think this was when I got the Sargent Art packs and I definitely see some Sakura Glaze pens in there.

I had a set idea in my mind for this one and promptly muffed it up so just did whatever colors I happened to grab.   The carousel awning thingys are done with craoyla metallic markers, which I like pretty well, but they are more matte than I'd like.  the rest is gel pens and markers.

Just another plain old crayon/kids coloring book page.   I have my kids coloring books stored in the drawers of my organizer right now because I have so many coloring books now.   Every time I post one of these it makes me want to dig them out, but I have so many other things to color, I never get around to it.

Doodle into Digital Design

I remembered that I do actually have one of my doodles that I digitized after doing the sketch.   The sketch: The digital version:

My Doodles ~ Part 1

On the FJ Colorists Unite blog we have been discussing drawing our own art to color and drawing in general.   Tikobaby asked if I had pictures of my other doodles, so I took some today.   These are very rough sketches without any finishing or clean up at all.   I'm going to make 2 different posts because I have quite a few of them.

This is the back side of the seahorse page from Lost Ocean.   Again, it was a picture vs a scan.  I like the way the pages look when using a picture, the metallics actually show up...yay.   However, the pages look so darn smudgy that it is driving me a little crazy.   Plus, the wonderful artifacts from my husband's poor phone. I might have to dig out my big camera and see how page look with that. This design was fun, but you can probably tell that I had no clue what direction I wanted to go.

I finally got around to doing a page from Lost Ocean.   This is a picture because the book is an odd size, so scanning was not possible.   My husband's iPhone made a trip to the washing machine a while ago and while it survived, there are artifacts in pictures now (like the little seed looking thing by the seahorse's nose) You can really see how smudgy your page gets when taking pictures, too, it seems.   I struggled trying to do the page in the coloring book since they are not perforated, but

We haven't had a sugar skull in a while, so here is my latest one.  This was done with colored pencils.   I did try a little shading on the bird, but the rest is just straight coloring.  I used a fair number of the tri-color pencils on this one.  I used a yellow one on the hair to try and give it a little more texture than just a straight yellow would look.   I think it turned out ok.

This is one of my favorite pages that I have done.  When I was working on it, my goal was just to use various shades of the same color on each of the star thingys.  After I was done, I really loved the way the brighter colors popped.   I sorta wish I had made the background black because that tends to really make the brighter colors pop.   Backgrounds are the hardest part for me because I tend to use so many colors in the actual designs that it's hard for me to pick something that will really s

Since people expressed interest in the Christmas books I posted about yesterday, this is another one from the on the go pocket size book.   This was done with paper mate felt tip markers and again was done in the car/dr appts, so don't look too close These little books are so much fun.  The designs are suitably detailed even though they are smaller and the book is just so darn convenient.   A couple weeks ago, we went to staples and I bought some colored pencils/markers and was so bummed out t

The Girls

Another email clean up picture.   I wanted to post this one because I mentioned that all 3 girls will cuddle with each other when I am not involved.   This also gives you an idea how big they are.  They are all 3 laying on the arm of our couch.

Wishing I had a dollar for every time I burped on my back porch after dark and set off a neighbor's dog. The best part is that I'm sure everyone think it's my BF and not me, because it's surely not possible such a huge noise could come out of my body.
