Picture of the Day ~ 11.07.15

Curious

Yesterday I talked about color theory and mentioned that if you use colors that are too similar for an entire page that it may turn out boring.   That doesn't have to be the case, though.

When I saw this guy, I immediately knew I wanted him to be all green.   I used to not particularly care for green, but in the last couple years I've become really fond of it, so was excited to see what I could do with this turtle.

Even though he's all greens, I tried to add some pretty good contrasts so he didn't just look like a green blob.   I think I did ok in this regard and he's not boring, but I might be a little biased ;)

I love this one! Not too surprising though since green is my favorite color and I love turtles...haha.

I especially like how you got different textures in the image (the turtle itself versus the shell). I think that really makes the picture pop more.

I have a set of markers, maybe felt tip pens, that if you color in a circle gives a nice textured look.   I use that on animals quite a bit so they don't look as flat.

He's gorgeous. The outermost circle on his shell must have been difficult?  You did a beautiful job!

The outermost circle wasn't too bad.  I use fine tip pens the majority of the time, so that helps.  The background wasn't too awful because it was just about a pen width wide so I just outlined each circle and filled in what was left.

Agree with others in that Jessa has always presented as less than endearing or rarely shown behaviors that I would consider Christlike. In this, she is JB to a T. But, karma can be interesting. Jessa has the most boring life and she seemingly has the least control of all her married sisters in the trajectory her future path is taking. Jinger is controlling her fertility, living in the big city far away from the rules and regulations of the TTH and sleepy Tontitown. Jill is married to an adult who appears to be leading his family in a more healthy fashion and in a secure direction. I have no doubt Jill loves the life she is leading, even though it is TTHless, it is more healthy. Joy and Austin seem to mesh well and are doing the things that make them both happy and fulfilled. And then there’s Jessa and Ben. Where was Ben??

Jessa is cunning, but I can’t blame her for her father & mother’s treatment of her sisters. During the hate Jill era Jessa seemed to be everyone’s pet fundy because she was so ‘spunky’ while all I saw was a smug, bossy know it all. She’s showing herself to be her father’s daughter - though, a master at manipulation.

Are you really a master of “manipulation” if most everyone can see right through your behaviors and words?

Narcissists always think everyone else buys the crap they do and say. They believe that they are smarter than everyone else. Much of the time they are wrong.

I’ve never liked Jessa. I thought she was smug since day one. But she seems to still have a relationship with Jinger and Jill. Even if they aren’t as close as they used to be. However Jill and Jinger are both very forgiving by nature. I bet they haven’t even brought up the topic of how they got shit from jb but Jessa didn’t.

oh god, i LOVE Maggie Smith's work. haven't read her memoir yet but adore the poem it's titled after. the poem is Good Bones and i've copied it here for those interested:

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
      a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.

That was so lovely. Thank you for bringing that into my life.

I hate to think how he might go off on people speaking a language other than English within his hearing.

I don't think he'd say anything negative to them or within their earshot - he's too much of a coward.

Based on past experience, I'd say he might attempt to sound inclusive while clearly being uncomfortable, as he does when discussing the multicultural church he visited in Chicago.

He might joke about how he could learn their language if you gave him 20 years, as he does at the Navajo churches.

We can hear that, with both of those, he's treating non-English speakers as lesser people, outsiders, but he thinks he's being friendly.

But he might have a lot of nasty things to say afterward. He might be indignant that everyone doesn't just speak English, similar to his complaint that he has to "mash" the button to choose English for some voice mail systems.

This is what would make me upset. Her sisters have had their relationship with their dad blown up in their faces for making such choices, and now Jessa reaps the benefits. I have to say, if I was one of her sisters, my relationship with her would shift.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

Someone please remind me to buy peanut butter. Seriously, I have been meaning to get some for at least three weeks, and everytime I remember, the shops are already closed!
