Members of the Octopod family that won't cause carnage...

I made a comment in response to @Maggie Mae on my last post detailing some of the horrors of the giant squid.  Those who know me weren't surprised - I work those facts into a surprising number of conversations.

But there are adorable members of the octopod family that would never eat you alive.  Let's meet them...

The Dumbo Octopus

Most species are 20-30 cm (7.9-12 in) length. The largest Dumbo octopus was 1.8 m (6 ft 32in) length and weighed in 5.9 kg (13 lb)

Their penises grow out of one of their arms

The average size of adult  is 100 mm (3.9 in)

  • [mating] between the male and female squid doesn't last long, it takes around 15 seconds.
  • The males long arms carry packets of sperm
  • These squids prefer to spawn in groups.

I wouldn't think 15 seconds of sweet fellowship would warrant going to the trouble of assembling a group...but then they don't judge my proclivities so I'll extend them the same courtesy.

Someone should look into making these guys little tote bags - it's gotta be rough hauling those sperm packets around in their arms all the time.

I'm sorry you view the physical expression of love shared between squid (or groups thereof) as disturbing.  I find it a beautiful and sacred act.

I love octopii! Even the big ones! :) There's another adorable member of the octopus family you forgot: the pac-man ghost octopus (not sure that is its common name, or even if it has one, but that's what it looks like and how I remember it). It's tiny and so cute that the proposed scientific name has "adorable" in it (Opisthoteuthis adorabilis).

Shouldn't a Dumbo Octopus have bigger ears?

No, because they don't have to fly.

Your blog is the only one where I keep scrolling down the page and fail to notice that the blog comments have ended and the forum posts are now being previewed.  Because: joyful randomness.

When stuff starts making sense or is even remotely topical you know you've wandered off my blog.

My son used to check out the same book about giant squids week after week from the library. It was one of those easy reader books.I read the damn thing to him every night for months. They never mentioned giant penises though.

Did you know that octopus are quite smart? I read an account of an octopus at a lab that would squirt water at the same person every time they saw her. She left for two years and when she came back to visit the octopus recognized her and squirted her again.

I had a similar thought - maybe the honeymoon wasn’t Pearl-level awful, but suddenly being alone with a member of the opposite sex and/or the physical side of marriage was shocking to one or both. For all these couples claim being married is the bestest thing ever, it’s got to be a difficult adjustment for many of them.

They go from living with their parents to moving in and having sex with basically a stranger within a day. No wonder it’s scary and awkward.

Surely they could get a swing set second hand and at least get out in their backyard. I have a basic one that I got free on give away weekend.  My daughter loves sending her dolls down the slide. She needs to get outside for her own mental health. Buy some sidewalk chalk and let Spurgie through Fern go nuts.

I'm pretty sure they have a swing set in their very large yard. Jessa probably just sits on the deck with George while the other four wear themselves out. That's likely as far as she gets out of the house on a daily basis. She probably has her groceries delivered, and we know she loves Amazon.

Sorry I can’t help but see so many fundie women turning out 2 ways when they become adults: The first are the fundie women who grew up being sister moms who got used to being perpetually exhausted and just became fundie wives in the same situation as a wife. And the second is the fundie princess. Who was raised sheltered, isolated, and thinking she’s better and more special than everyone else because god. Examples are Braggie and Jill Rod. I wouldn’t be surprised if Haley is a fundie princess. Just a guess.

NOPE on making kids responsible for other kids’ safety- that is a huge recipe for disaster and the need for lifelong therapy.
