I bought some Pampered Chef pieces back in the late 90s/early 00s and they are still doing fine.   I didn't attend parties but I would purchase from co-workers who were having parties and circulated the Pampered Chef book throughout the office.  There was no pressure.  Either you bought or you didn't.    

I have a 31 bag that I bought brand new on Amazon that I enjoy using on trips.  Bought it in 2015 and it's still holding strong. 

My church had an affair similar to what your friend did.  They had vendors for different MLMs set up booths with things to sell and buy right then and there.  I got some really great deals on Silpada (another one I used to love) at that booth.  The vendors were selling retired demo pieces at 50 percent off.  So sometimes there actually are deals to be had.    

I'm super anti-MLM but I will die on the Tupperware/Pampered Chef hill. They have quality items that last a long time. Yes, they're a bit more pricy, but the investment is well worth it, imo.
