Faulty towers have nothing on us!
Little bit of history, my parents had purchased a motel when I was 16 so I grew up in the industry. After many years working for them I moved on to the hospitality industry as a waitress and I also cleaned motel rooms and then became a full time receptionist at a golf club where I met my husband (moteldad) . Upon becoming pregnant I decided continuing to work at the golf club was hazardous to my pregnancy, the doctor agreed.
For some reason we thought that purchasing a motel was a good idea, I know go figure! I do not recommend becoming pregnant, getting married and purchasing a motel all within a few months.
10 years on I reflect on the many, many (head shake) things that have gone wrong in the motel.
The first few months really highlighted just how naive we where. Down pipes where patched with stickers and painted over, duct tapes was used to hold stuff together but the worst thing was the pool fence that didn't go all the way around pool. Australian pool fence regulations are rather stringent and we were rather gobsmacked to think of the risk the previous owners took. We rectified this immediately, thankfully moteldad is a wealth of useful skills.
I laugh when I think of it now but I also go ewwww as I remember cleaning the showers for the first time. I thought that the grout was black, stupid me! No the mould was black the grout was cream...lol.. So 3 days and many litres of exit mould later the showers were non toxic and ready for the guests use. Just as well we were very quiet.
I cringe as I vacced the carpet and the lovely shag pile pulled out in large chunks and left lovely bald patches. We pulled our hair out as the shower in one of the rooms leaked and soaked said shag pile. Upon pulling it up we discovered a lovely colony of mildew .... shit what to do we were booked out in 1 month !!! So several thousand dollars and a new bathroom / tiled entry and carpet later we were ready to rock and roll... except we really should have pulled out the old wardrobe unit, the old bench and the fixed side tables before we rendered the walls. But that is another story, one of many were we re-did stuff already done..oh the money we have flushed down the drain re-doing stuff.
Next time : Prem babies, infectious diseases and the beginnings of the never ending renovations.
