Coworker tells me he's made yet another plea for them to make me stay...

I explain that contrary to popular belief no matter what they felt I wouldn't be required to stay.  There is no legal indenture applying to me...

Delightful! Tech support kitty, LOL!

In case it wasn't clear Buffy, you tell a story via memes like nobody else. That's what I found delightful. Your former workplace was anything but. They took assholery to a new level, no compassion whatsoever shown toward you or your son. Enjoy your new job!

They sing some hymns, with Pastor Henry at the piano or on the violin. The Hawkinses sing, ending with Becky singing Preach On, then Gary comes up to preach.

I will never read that without thinking Becky's singing the Lola Ray song "Preach On"

      Spoiler

Your red dress doesn't come alive
'til you cross your legs and wave goodbye
      Better late then never
      Better never

I heard that you got in trouble
Holding your hand with the company devil
      Better late then never
Better never (to tell me how much you cared)

I got it wrong when you went away
You were talking loud I had my hands up
      Don't come this way

      So preach on
      Keep on with your words
      Talk on
      Leave me in a blur
      Preach on
      Go on with your words
      Keep on
      Keeping me in a blur

      I don't know yet
      I'll find out
There's nothing wrong with my head
      What I'm talking about

      So preach on
(You can't go on and on) about nothing now
You think got it all worked out
You think you got it all worked out

      So preach on
(You can't go on and on) about nothing now
You think got it all worked out
      Ain't nobody listening now
      (What you gonna do)

      So preach on
You can't go on and on about nothing now

You think got it all worked out
You think you got it all worked out

      So preach on
You can't go on and on about nothing now
      (Keep on with your words)
You think got it all worked out
You think got it all worked out
(Talk on keep me in a blur)
      Ain't nobody listening now

      What you gonna...

Then years later, when things have finally died down —- he escalates to this. He may likely have been  doing this for a long time before being caught. He would have to know, fundamentalist beliefs aside, that getting caught would lead to very, very bad things for himself and his family. He obviously has a compulsion and even wreckage to his own life isn’t enough to stop it.

I think he's a sick and twisted human being. He'd be that way as a fundie or a secular person. I also think he's deeply unhappy with his life, knowing that his parents made damn good and sure he'd have a shitty education that would keep him tied to the family in some way for the rest of his life. The only time he'd be able to stay out of trouble would be when he's either in real jail or Jesus jail. I'm sure he's done these things before, he just didn't get caught. (the CSA stuff).

how long do you think it'd take for him to get busted downloading CSA again? The odds of learning his lesson seem mighty slim.

Unless they have some sort of serious, specific, incredibly effective treatment, probably combined with medication - I don’t see him stopping He might wait awhile, he might switch up HOW he’s acting out, but he will do something that crashes everything down around him, and it will almost certainly involve something sexual.

We talk about how he got no consequences from his previous actions - but really he did. When he was a teen he was humiliated in front of everyone he knew, he probably had the sh*t beat out of him repeatedly, he had to do a ton of manual labor (probably to levels that would be illegal in most US prison systems) AND many years later his behavior was brought to light, he lost his job, his whole entire family at least temporarily lost their show. His family name was dragged through the mud and STILL he decided to cheat on his wife in a fairly public way. If he hadn’t had the previous molestation that brought everything down, that wouldn’t be that huge a deal—- but he knew what was hanging over his head and did it anyway.

Possibly/Probably a dumb question but those of you who watch the webcasts, did it make you nervous to open an account? I can't think of any reason why it would be risky but I have hesitated to do so.

From Twitter today: Dr. Tarango @atarango1 (American religious historian at Trinity Univ. (TX) specializing in Native American and Latino religious traditions.)

re: Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin DuMez and Anthea Butler's White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America

"Finished this today and although I’m a scholar of non-white (Native and Latinx) Protestantism and knew so many of the examples in the book, it is really something to see them all together with such a great argument. Congrats @kkdumez for this great piece of public scholarship.

Also when read alongside @AntheaButler‘s book it’s like a banquet of white evangelical issues. Butler’s book entirely focuses on race and together with Du Mez on masculinity you really realize how much white evangelicalism is defined by cultural issues, not biblicism."
