WIP blue squirrel & short blending tutorial

I'm working on this blue squirrel. See that one lone colored leaf down there? I made a short picture tutorial on how to color that leaf, since I was asked in my last post :) it's very short and easy! IMG_8232.thumb.jpg.89056582954594f5f1de9

We are going to color this leaf:

First, choose your colors. I'm using apple green and dark green. They don't have to be the same color family but different hues, but it does make it a lot simpler--if you go from red to blue, for example, you'll need a transitional color in the middle to soften the lines a little.

After you've chosen your colors, start coloring with the lighter shade. You want to start where the light shade will be the most vibrant and progressively lighten your strokes as you move down. I keep the strokes short and even. It's hard to see in this picture but the entire leaf has been touched by the apple green pencil.

For my leaf, I wanted the transition to be from light to dark, so my darkest point would be at the bottom of the leaf. It's the same priniciple as the light color, just reversed. It is a little easier on the dark color if you have a lighter hand. You can always build on the color, but you can't take it away.

As you move further up the object, you'll be moving into the more saturated area and your colors will slowly transition into each other.

Just use a light hand to blend the edges.

Sometimes it helps to lightly go back over the transitional area with your lighter color.

Thanks for the tutorial!

Do you use blender pencils to smooth out your transitions ever?  I was just reading about layering color earlier today, so this was really nice to see it in action right after having read about it.  It made things make much more sense.

I like your blue squirrel, too :)

I don't! There's one around somewhere but to be honest I've never touched it. And you're all welcome! :)

Thanks so much!  I'm looking forward to branching out more into layering.  I've often wondered if blender pencils are necessary and/or helpful as well.

Your squirrel rocks, heck your entire page rocks :)

Thank you :)

My squirrel, all of the leaves and flowers, and the acorns on this page were done with this method. I've done it with crayon too (though not in yaers). I would imagine that the blending pencil would probably make the colors transition more smoothly and I really should hunt it down and try to use it!

Nice!  I have a Prismacolor blender pencil I use on and off.  I usually use Prismacolor soft coloured pencils and find that they blend quite easily by themselves, so normally I can't be bothered and don't think it makes much difference.  But sometimes the pencils just aren't mixing well so that's when it helps.  It also seems to make the area blended lighter, so I use it to soften bits if I feel they stick out too much. So I definitely don't think they're at all necessary, but fun to experiment with.

I have blender and burnisher pencils.   I haven't used the burnisher very much, but my reading on layering has shown me where it would be useful.

I use my blender quite a bit when I use the tri color pencils I have.   It gives them a softer, smoother look.

I was just reading a good way to soften colors is to use white colored pencil over the area.   You can also burnish with white apparently.

Thank you for this! I am going to have to try this technique! I got 3 new colouring books for Christmas so I will have plenty of opportunity to practice!

I was born with dark hair. Fell out, came back white blonde. Have been going darker ever since. It’s ash blonde (street dog blonde….) now. Which- as the internet tells me, is no considered „old money blonde“ (🤪🙄). Maybe that’s how we see it when I have finally grown out the dark brown I had dyed it…..

They could have moved closer to Ryann’s family last summer instead of moving to Seattle…that would have saved them their donors several thousands…but it’s not money they had to earn so they don’t care. Every decision they make is very reactive as opposed to proactive. They rarely think of the consequences.

I really hate the fancy appliances that companies put out these days. Like the fridges with a touch screen on it. Like why does my fridge need a touch screen? Wtf?

      And it probably won't leak!

Or at least won’t need a technician to fix…

I also think braggie's fridge is dumb. It comes with a pitcher for water. Great. I can buy a $35 pitcher with a filter and fill it in the sink and get the same result.

      And it probably won't leak!
