Starfish Pt. 1

I started this page tonight. This is from Joanna Basford's most recent book, Lost Ocean. It's very detailed, which helps me to slow down.

Question: others who enjoy coloring, do you choose your colors before you begin the project, or do you choose your colors as you go?

I'm choosing as I go along, with this particular page. That's how I usually do it, but this project makes me think that in the future I might want to choose my color scheme first. As I go, I'm getting nervous that I'm not picking the best colors, and this beautiful page will be ruined. I know, I'm over thinking it, but I am curious about how you all do it! :pb_wink:

I love the colors you are using!  I do a bit of both, planning ahead and going with shades, blends as I go along.  I've ordered the Lost Ocean book as well.

Everyone is inspiring me so much!

I do a bit of both on color selection.  Sometimes I think about the color combinations because I am feeling something.  Sometimes it might be i'm feeling greens or I'm feeling oranges.  (on one it was I'm feeling blues but alas I was at work with Twistables  and have a whopping 2 shades of blue very close together and had to go in a different direction).  Other times I just start and see where it leads me.

I look at a page and whatever part of the design attracts me the most, I start with that in the color I'd  most like to see it in. It's a feeling, but then I choose colors that will set off the others around them and make things "pop".  I use a lot of opposite colors together and like balancing the picture as a whole so it's very vivid and colorful, but not chaotic and annoying...at least I try to do that!  My favorite color is red and I love red and yellow together. Love vivid primary colors. Really don't know much about blending or art technique, just love colors. Think it all stems from my love of bright & colorful Fischer-Price toys as a child.

I really like your color choices in the starfish picture. It looks great and I can't wait to see the finished page. Whatever your method is, it's working!

I choose as I go and really put almost no thought to it. Which is probably why my pictures never look great. And I make "mistakes" and whatnot. I don't really care though. :)

It depends on the page for me.   Sometimes I look at a page and just "know" what colors I want to use.  Other times I just pick as I go or I pick a color that I really like and want to work around.

It just depends on my mood and/or the page I've picked.

Some pages look like colored pencil and some look like pen/marker to me, as well.   I'm not really sure why, but I don't fight it ;)

@JermajestyDuggar, “Pittsburgh potties” weren’t basement bathroom facilities for workmen—they were toilets installed to deal with water flow issues such as sewage backup. If they had been intended for usual toilet purposes, they wouldn’t have been set out in the middle of the cellar with no enclosure or sink.

Thanks. I’ve heard the myth so many times that I figured it was true. But I have seen a lot of toilets that weren’t right in the middle. Some were off to the side of the basement too. And there was usually a sink down there for laundry. Usually the giant cement ones. We still have our giant cement sink that was used for laundry in the basement.

This is what wiki says. Maybe it’s a combination of both.

Still no donations.  I sure hope they are trying to come up with plan B.  A single $100 donation isn't going to help them move.

The ADHD talk reminded me of someone’s crotchety old grandpa saying around the dinner table, “in my day, we didn’t have ADHD. We had the belt.”

I truly hope that one day when I’m very old, I don’t fight against modern psychological treatment and parenting techniques thinking my day was better.

I was diagnosed with ADHD a few weeks shy of my 40th birthday a year ago. I was also spanked by my father for punishment. He used his houseslippers, not a belt, but I think not really less painfull. And I very likely inherited it from him. It's hard to proof now because he died almost 20 years ago, but the symptoms fit him. He was punished by his father by being spanked with a carpet beater. No matter how many beatings I got, it didn't made my neurotypical. But what helps are the meds. They don't make it perfect, but help me get things done and lessen the worst of it. So fuck all these people with their "beat it out of them" bullshit.

And that, again, was because her mom was at lunch with them and made her do it.

Let’s hope her mom is able to make it to her homebirth. If it’s a very fast birth, she might not make it in time. And then she won’t have someone with fucking sense to recognize and emergency.
