Worldly Distractions: Girls 3.9 - Flo

The world is crumbling around me. With Ukraine and Russia practically at war and everyone waiting with bated breath - who doesn't need a little Worldly Distraction? Let's all have fun with the kids who don't have real problems.

Previously: Marnie and Ray break up, Jessa falls off the wagon, Adam gets a part. Patti LuPone warns Hannah of the dangers ahead.

Hannah gets a call from her mom - Grandma's dying and she's needed back home. After some argument, she heads for her childhood pastures. Opening title. Hannah packs up and reminisces about her Grandma. Adam can't come due to his rehearsal schedule. This brings up Hannah's insecurities, but he assures her that she's irreplaceable.

She arrives at the hospital to find Aunt Margo (Rhonda Pearlman), who is breathtakingly blunt. Grandma (the genius June Squibb, who was losing an Oscar the same night this aired) is really and truly on her way out. Hannah is as comforting as she can be, which is not very. Hannah's mom and Aunt Sissy (Amy Morton) show up, and the three sisters start bickering about who's more devoted to dying Grandma. Hannah takes her mom out to get food. Here we find out that Grandma Flo was really not the best person ever, always saying cruel things and destroying her children's self-esteem. As a last favor, Hannah's mom begs her to tell Grandma that she and Adam are engaged. Hannah flat-out refuses.

The family returns to Aunt Margo's home, where Aunt Margo dregs up old grudges from Hannah's childhood involving a cousin. We meet Hannah's med student cousin Rebecca (Sarah Steele). Their relationship is awkward, to say the least. Meanwhile, Aunt Sissy, Aunt Margo and Hannah's mom divvy up Grandma's impressive collection of pills. They get into an argument about all of Flo's stuff.

Hannah calls Adam in New York. When she brings up the fake-marriage story, they quickly get into an argument over whether they'll get married, ever. Commitment this, long-term that. Adam finally hangs up and grimaces at the phone.

The sisters continue to fight over Flo's ring. Hannah should get it because of Adam, Rebecca should get it because she's the oldest, it was promised to Aunt Sissy long ago, etc, etc. Hannah and Rebecca go out, though it's weird because Rebecca doesn't drink on weeknights. Rebecca is also apparently carrying a lot of grudges against Hannah, which is pretty ridiculous at this point considering they were about six. She tells Hannah about her boyfriend, who has another girlfriend. Oh, and Rebecca hates writers, too! Hannah rightly calls her out on this. They get into a "Grandma said that" argument, which culminates in a recap of the time when Rebecca was asked by Hannah to touch her "chachi" (and yes, a chachi is exactly what you think it is). Note that they were about seven at the time.

They drive home, during which Rebecca receives a text that Grandma's worse. The responsible med student won't let Hannah touch the phone because of her chachi hands, and winds up rear-ending a parked car at a frighteningly high speed.

They wind up in the hospital themselves, Hannah bruised and Rebecca in a neck brace. Adam shows up almost immediately. The moms arrive soon after, whereupon Aunt Margo immediately blames Hannah, even though Rebecca was driving. More inheritance arguments happen. Unforgivable things are said by all three sisters. Eventually a nurse has to run in to shut them up. I have to say, I understand Hannah so much better now.

Adam goes off to the bathroom. Rebecca tells Hannah that he's nice. The cousins hold hands. Upstairs, Grandma June is still dying. Hannah introduces Adam (as her boyfriend). Grandma's not up to any visitors. Adam breaks in by telling her that they're engaged. Grandma takes this as an excuse to give marital advice - "Someday you will look at him, hating him with every fibre of your being, wishing he would die the most violent death possible. It will pass." Sage advice indeed. Outside the room, Hannah's mom thanks them for putting on the act, even if for a few minutes. Hannah remarks that if Grandma lives, they'll have to get married. Her mother advises her to "stay open to possibilities," which of course offends Hannah. They say a few snotty things.

They all keep overnight vigil, and guess what, Grandma pulls through. Everyone's thrilled. The sisters vow to be closer. While they're outside, Hannah has nice goodbye with Flo. She goes back to New York - and promptly gets a phone call from Rebecca. Grandma Flo died of a heart attack.

It was certainly nice to get away from the endless friendship drama this week, and we also got a lot of insight into Hannah Horvath and what makes her tick. Anyone growing up with that aunt and cousin would have to have issues, right? All in all, it made for a solid episode and a nice half-hour getting to know a very polarizing character. Best of all? No Marnie!

Mike seems to be OK, judging from Shoshanna's FB & IG posts. A number of NGJ articles have his byline which fits with what is shown on social media. Who knows what's really happening. IIRC, Mike & Debi didn't hesitate to seek fairly conventional medical care when they themselves needed it for his stroke or her back surgery a few years ago. Debi might write a bunch of shit about herbal cures in NGJ but I bet you won't catch her or Mike spending $50+ K on a Mexican health spa run by quacks.

She & James were living in that same house for some years before their divorce - the same one where she is now and where her "friend" Eric seems to be doing a shitload of home improvements for her. Maybe heʻs getting paid with Plexus swill.

All of this. Their abuse manual for infants & children - TTUAC - is designed to produce adults that will either inflict or accept abuse from others. Michael & Debi Pearl are monsters.

Another vote for Chief's won't care.

This was Benedictine College, a deeply trad Catholic college, and his remarks were apparently well received. I am sure there were some (many?) women in the audience annoyed and rightly offended since this was the celebration of the graduation of ALL students, female and male.

I read somewhere that he was at that Stronger Men conference in Springfield MO along with Sen Josh Hawley. The one where Mark Driscoll got the drama ball rolling.

So yeah. Butker is a shit stirrer.

My brother was diagnosed with Asbergers as a child and probably also ADD because they put him on ritalin.  He loved it because he could totally focus and do his work but he developed some sort of shoulder shrugging tic on it so they stopped it and never did anything else.  As a recently-turned 40yo he is still dealing with a lifetime of thinking he was stupid and incompetent because he couldn't learn or work in a traditional way.  He is a TREASURE of a human being whose life has been made immeasurably more difficult because no one really followed up or took his issues seriously.  I don't know if he'll ever seek help for it as an adult but I wish he would - he still thinks it's possible everyone else in the world knows how other people work and nobody will just tell him.

The thing is her parents are emotionally and physically abusive. And they write books teaching it. So who knows what she considers abuse. When you grow up surrounded in normalized abuse, how can you see abuse for what it is?

There is complexity here in that she is deeply self-centered and probably unable to recognize abusive behavior in herself and in others, both.

I may have the story wrong, but it sounds like she returned to her parent’s property after her divorce which is…bizarre. Her enmeshment with her oldest son is also bizarre.

And now this rewriting of history that crosses over from bizarre to totally enraging.

It’s a mix of poor boundaries and a diva complex that IMO makes it impossible to believe what she says. (And I say that recognizing there could have been abuse. There could also be a husband tired of the crazy and pushing back for the sake of the children and that might have felt abusive to her. Or some mix of both.)

That's what makes this worse than if she were trying to actually soften their earlier teachings. She's not. She's outright claiming now, in 2024, men are beating their wives and those abused wives aren't who their books were written for. Those abused wives - THOSE DEAD CHILDREN - are literally who they wrote their books for!

How many women did they privately shame into staying with their abuser? How many women over the DECADES did they tell to "just try harder," and "open your legs more often," and "if you were as submissive to him as you're telling us you are he wouldn't have beat you. You need to stop lying to yourself and to him and god will bless your marriage"?

      HOW. MANY. WOMEN?

How many women did you, Debi, counsel to accept being raped as a normal part of marriage?

And how many more abused children that never died and so we never heard your book was found in their parents bedrooms? HOW DARE YOU LIE AND MAKE YOURSELF SEEM INNOCENT!

I want to add that most of the dead children were adopted. They were kids already traumatized. I share your rage.

This makes me much more angry than just ignoring the usual criticism. They are gaslighting, denying, and pretending like they had no idea there were men who beat the shit out of their wives when writing their heinous books.

Debi, “what?!? You mean there are men who beat women? I’ve never heard of such a thing!”

      Fuck off.
