There is a beautiful fractal app available for purchase on IOS devices that really can honestly be said to be the most sexy-beautiful fractal app in the world. The homepage for the app is at http://fract.al/. I use the iPhone version for portable explorations, and the iPad version for more in-depth art work. It has a Basic version, and a Pro version. Needless to say, the Pro version is 100% worth the modest price tag.
Warning: This app will make your IOS device notably warm, and will suck your battery dry with ease. I never do extensive explorations on it unless my device is plugged in. It is literally THE most math-intensive app in the entire Store.
It was designed with the assistance of the reclusive Kai Krause (a graphics design interface pioneer and math genius who shuns the world by actually living, and working, in the 1000-year-old castle Burg Rheineck near Bonn in Germany. His rarely updated blog is here http://kai.sub.blue/).
Krause designed the interface for such famous 3D hobbyist apps as Bryce, he also helped designed Poser, which is an alternative of sorts to DAZ Studio.
For this project I designed a black & white fractal that would be suitable for coloring in. I rendered it and printed it out.
I then carefully chose a 4 color palette and used some basic Crayola coloring pencils I had. I like Crayola for the affordable price and bold colors. For a project such as this they are perfect.
I then colored in the fractal on the paper. I found this to be MUCH needed stress relief, and I want to thank the Cult of the Coloring Minions for inspiring me to take up art therapy in this manner (well, my therapist also suggested, but still). The only "fiddly" part is the yellow "canyons" at the heart of the fractal.
I took the 4 chosen colors and merged them into Frax (you do this via a simple photo. I just took a photo on the actual 4 Crayola pencils themselves). Using the palette I had Frax generate a lovely 60 second animated movie of the various colors cycling through. The video has been uploaded to my YouTube account, and the link is only viewable to FJ. There is only one annoying bug in the rendering of videos in the Frax app: The overlay controls at the top flicker weirdly in and out. Nothing I can do about that, sorry. I still love the results.
Video is here:
Another super-sexy feature of Frax is the ability to give the fractals AMAZING 3D depth, intricate texture, and even position two 3D lights above to make it all "pop" in a way no other fractal app in the world can. I carefully adjusted the 4 color palette on the fractal, tweaked with the 3D depth, and carefully placed the 3D lights to add gloss. I showed it to the wife and she instantly said "Reminds me of a Tiger Lily". So, it has been named "Tiger Lily". =)
Finally, another math-sexy feature in the Pro version of Frax is the option to upload it to a fleet of dedicated servers that will render your fractal design at SUPER high 8192x6144 pixel resolution, 50.3 Mpx, and 81x super sampling. It costs a small fee to do this, to offset server costs (you buy packs of credits, in various prices, and it is really affordable), and can take up to 30 minutes.
I attempted to upload the raw image, but at 14.8 megabytes FJ just gave me an error. I reduced the image down to a more manageable 2.4 megabytes, at 2000x1500 resolution.
