Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.2 - A Day's Work

After a slow-moving (but satisfying) season premiere, will the action start to pick up? Let's find out! Previously on: Sally catches Don in the act, Joan does her power play with Avon last season, Ted buggers off to California, Don gets kicked out of the agency. Lou Avery is also a dick. Don and Megan remain distant, even in bed together. Opening credits. Maybe we'll actually see more than half the cast they're trumpeting. Written by Igla/Weiner, directed by Uppendahl. Don wakes

Worldly Distractions: Community 5.13 - Basic Sandwich

Okay, I'm not going to get into the same wailing as last year, because I thought it would be the series finale, and we all know it wasn't. On the other hand, this really could be the end of the show. So, let's just say that it's been a really fun season (better than Four, anyway, but getting punched in the face is better than Four), and an incredible adventure all the way. Let's see how this season finishes.  Will they save Greendale? Probably.   We learn about the origins of

My Five Wives, Season 1, Episode Six, Do You Want to Know a Secret?

My Five Wives, Season 1, Episode Six, Do You Want to Know a Secret? We open on another shot of those gorgeous mountains. Inside, Brady and the wives are in a meeting. I wonder if this is a weekly thing. That would make sense. Lots of logistical stuff to work out, I would imagine. During this particular meeting we learn that Rosemary is finally going to get her night away for her anniversary. Rosemary remarks that because Brady doesn’t have a lot of time, it’s common that these date

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 17, The Jolly Roger

The Pouty Pirate We open at night on a carriage in the Enchanted Forest sometime in the past year. (For brevity’s sake, I’m going to call the Enchanted Forest “EF.â€) The carriage comes to a stop before a mysterious knight who tells the guards that this is a stick-up. The carriage drivers think this is the funniest thing they’ve ever heard, which is a sure sign that they are about to die/be robbed. The knight gives a sign and torches/flaming arrows alight throughout the woods. I’m

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 25.18 - Days of Future Future

Another Simpsons episode where the kids get to (temporarily) grow up! These ones can be hit ("Lisa's Wedding") or miss ("Bart to the Future"), but at the very least, they offer a break from the same-old same-old routine. Let's see how this one measures up. No opening credits, except for a couch gag where the living room is covered in bubble wrap and everyone jumps on it. I admit it's one of the cleverest in a while. Marge wakes up to find Homer bloated from overeating, the kitche

Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.1 - Time Zones

I don't know about you, but I got excited just typing this title. Oh, what a happy day this is. Mad Men is back, everybody! Let's go on to the review before we die of anticipation. (No Simpsons until tomorrow, I have a rough work week and my time is reserved for special things, like awesome '60s fashion.) Alley oop! Previously on: The Drapers fight over which coast to live on, Pete moves to LA and leaves Trudy forever, Peggy and Ted get freaky, Roger fights with his daughter. Don ge

Worldly Distractions: Community 5.12 - Basic Story

Holy crap, can you believe the season's almost over? This is the first part of the finale! Where did the time go? Well, your loyal recapper is here to document it all. Let's see what Greendale and its inhabitants are up to. The committee is slowly ticking through its tasks, and the school is coming along. Everyone sits back in satisfaction, except Abed, who just looks mildly confused. He's disturbed by their contentment, because problems are necessary. Everyone chides him, so he lets

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 7.20 - The Relationship Diremption

Bla bla bla nerds bla bla bla mediocre expectations bla bla bla let's move on with the episode. Everyone's at lunch, discussing a big break through in astrophysics. Raj is riding pretty high in the scientific community over it, but Sheldon doesn't care. He claims it's a concern about elitism, which no one believes. Leonard insists he's just jealous. Sheldon claims that his duties lie elsewhere - there's a lot of good TV these days. Kripke interrupts to tell them that there actually hasÂ

My Five Wives, Season 1, episode 5

The Birds and the Bees and Everything In Between We begin with a wives’ meeting during which Brady wants to know “who I owe what†regarding anniversaries and such. Paulie explains the rules—when you’ve been married 10 years you “get†to go away for a week with Brady. After 15 years, you get a weekend. Why do the trips get shorter as time goes on? Rosemary and Nonie are both owed trips. Rosemary does NOT look amused. She tells us they are three months past their anniversary. Still

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 25.17 - Luca$

This episode does not look remotely promising, but I will suck it up anyway and review. Rumor has it that every latter-day Simpson episode earns you at least a couple weeks off your time in Purgatory. At first I wonder if we've time travelled to the 80's, but not, it's just an opening-credits tribute to Minecraft. I don't play it, but my students are obsessed with it, so er, cool I guess. The artwork's pretty cool, anyway. We go back to regular animation. Homer has passed out, ta

Worldly Distractions: Community 5.11 - GI Jeff

This time, we delve back into childhood. Like that doesn't happen every week on this show. Time for an epic adventure! We start the episode, and right away we've got serious 80's-style animation. You know, the kind that occupied Saturday mornings throughout your childhood? I have to say, it's absolutely perfectly done. Soldiers storm the Taj Mahal, and Cobra orders it destroyed. Of course, GI Joe fends them off, because WE'RE AMURICAH, EAGLES AND APPLE PIE AND POOR ECONOMIC DECISIONS.

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 7.19 - The Indecision Amalgamation

After a two-week hiatus, it's time to get reacquainted with the nerdiest cast  around that aren't on Community. Let's get to it. Sheldon really has to pee, but can't leave the computer because he's trying to decide between an xBox 1 and a PS4. According to him, research demonstrates that people with full bladders make better decisions, though I would hardly call pulling over by the side of the highway just as a moose ran by a good decision, MOM. Penny arrives from a successful audit

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 5.19 - A Hard Jay's Night

After last week's amusing Vegas adventure, it'll be nice to see the group more settled on home territory. Well, let's hope so anyway - I'm still recovering from the HIMYM finale. Here we go. Cam and Mitch are busy with wedding plans and swamped with wedding gifts. One gift in particular is downright touching - Cam's dad carved them a custom wedding cake topper, complete with foot-poppin' Mitch. His boyfriend hates it, but they've both used up their allotted "wedding vetos", so it's

Worldly Distractions: How I Met Your Mother 9.23/9.24 - Last Forever

Well, here we are. After nine long years, we have reached the end of the road. In this episode, Ted meets the mother and the show ends its fantastic run. We all know what we came for, so let's get to it. We begin at the beginning - September 2005. Ted has struck out yet again. Robin set him up with the girl, and Barney is outraged that "Roxanne" has horned in on his "Have you met Ted?" game. Clearly, this is a romance for the ages. Robin talks about how difficult the transition has be

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 25.16 - You Don't Have to Live Like a Referee

Well, with Call the Midwife and Girls gone, Sunday nights have become downright free! And for once, I approach an episode of The Simpsons from this decade in a good mood. I wonder how quickly this episode will kill it. We get no real intro (just a clip of Muu-Muu Homer from that episode where he got really fat), going straight to the couch gag, where the Simpsons participate in The Running of the Bulls - er, Couches. They make it to their own couch, but one of the bull-couches knock

My Five Wives, season 1, episode 4

Hi, all, happy to be joining you as a recapper. Let’s begin, shall we? The family is gathered together saying a prayer for a happy Christmas season. That’s a lovely sentiment but it seems to be getting sort of unwieldy using the “repeat after me†method. One overly long sentence and the whole thing devolves into a crowd mumbling “blah, blah, blah…..†Brady talks about the “balancing act†that is his life. No kidding, honey. He’s also looking forward to “slowing down

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 5.18 - Las Vegas

Oh, boy, another "main characters take a vacation episode"! And Las Vegas - that's not formulaic in the least. No way will, say, Dylan wake up married to Cam by accident or anything. And absolutely no one will get blackout drunk. Okay, enough with the griping - maybe this episode will work. We actually get an appearance by jetBlue, which means the product placement in this episode will be rampant, I'm sure. At the hotel, Gloria and Jay delight in their rich-people view of the world

Worldly Distractions: How I Met Your Mother 9.22 - The End of The Aisle

And as we approach the end of the aisle, we approach the end of the series, too. Minutes from marriage, will Robin and Barney get past their massive hangups? Let's find out. We come in at 5:28, with thirty-two minutes to go in the longest wedding buildup ever. While Barney ponders his choice of tie, Robin ponders her choice of husband. Yup, the Canadian tough girl is getting bridal cold feet. Ted, eager not to be involved with another runaway bride situation, has to restrain her from

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 25.15 - The War of Art

And that's another time they're ripped off their own ripoff titles. Way to go, guys. I guess it can only go up from here? No opening credits, just a title card. Homer wakes up in the morning and heads to the bathroom, only to find a message written on the mirror: "Lisa wants a guinea pig". Wait, I thought they had one, or was that retconned? I definitely know they had a hamster at some point. Marge gets the same message in the shower, as does Homer at work. She even paid Lenny and C

Worldly Distractions: Girls 3.12 - Two Plane Rides

Season finale, and our girls have had their ups and downs the whole way. What on earth can the insane mind of Lena Dunham come up with next? Previously on: Adam moves out, Hannah and Elijah go see Patti LuPone and her fake husband, Bede hires Jessa, Hannah quits/gets fired, Marnie unsuccessfully hits on Desi, Hannah catches Marnie in bed with Ray. Hannah goes to grab her mail and unexpectedly runs into Adam's crazy sister, Caroline. Turns out she's shacked up with Laird. They see

Worldly Distractions: Community 5.10 - Advanced Advanced Dungeons and Dragons

Oh, no, you did not. Season 2's Dungeons and Dragons episode, possibly the best episode of the entire series, was an untouchable classic. Sure, they returned to the paintball well before with incredible results, but without Troy's priceless reactions and Pierce's schemes, to say nothing of the frame of helping Neil with his self-esteem, they've got major shoes to fill. I can't even Google for a picture without an overwhelming majority of Season 2 results. Maybe that's a hint, guys?

Worldly Distractions: How I Met Your Mother 9.21 - Gary Blauman

I have no idea who the magical Mr. Blauman is, or whether he's appeared on this show before (Google tells me he has, once), but apparently he's significant enough to have an episode named after him. I guess we should find out why. We cut to Wednesday at 8 PM - three days after the wedding. The Mother waits outside a fancy building. Ted shows up, and they go on their first date, for Scottish-Mexican fusion. The restaurant looks weird, though, so they decide to go somewhere else. The Mo

Worldly Distractions: Girls 3.11 - I Saw You

One episode from the third season finale, and things are falling apart for some and going back to normal for others. What comes next? Previously on: Marnie interviews for an assistant job with obnoxious Soojin and writes music with Desi, Shoshana prompts a fight between Jasper and his daughter Dot, Adam and Hannah do the weird roleplay, Adam moves out, Jessa admits she's a junkie. Moving on. Adam and Hannah continue to have uncomfortable-looking sex like nothing happened. Then Ha

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 25.14 - The Winter of His Content

After last week's sad tribute to Edna (oh, and a whole other episode I chose to forget), we get the oft-repeated plot of Grampa having to move in. Maybe Mr. Burns will get shot again this time? Billboard has an ad for the local synagogue, urging viewers to "Give Up Jesus For Lent". No Jew I've ever met would ever say that - it's not a proselytizing faith at all - so five seconds in and we're already offensive! Hoorah. Chalkboard: My dad's already drunk for St. Patrick's. Come on, Ho

Worldly Distractions: Community 5.9 - VCR Maintenance and Educational Publishing

Four episodes left and almost a third of the original study group gone. Can Community still deliver the laughs? Let's find out. Annie conducts a Committee meeting, though Jeff ruins it by pointing out all her strategies in advance. Abed arrives with Rachel, who has just purchased "Pile of Bullets", a VCR game, to honor their anniversary. Heh, I just remembered those existed. There was a Gargoyles one, right? Abed wants to play it with Rachel that night, but Annie kind of wanted the
