I just saw this so I should respond. The one thing that made it easier is a lot of the porn that is out there is just copies, of copies of copies. He didn't come into contact with a lot of newly created stuff. But it was hard when he did forensics and read journals, etc where these people talking about people following kids around at beaches and family bathrooms and the like.

He is private sector now, and I can't even talk in generics about most of what he does, which is sort of disappointing because he is still a badass.

There is some comfort in the fact that the majority of the porn are copies of copies. It makes the whole thing a little less heartbreaking (for lack of a better word right now).

That's OK; we don't have to know what he does right now in the private sector. We know he's badass because he's your husband, and you would never settle for anyone less than awesome, am I right? :D 8-)

Wow, that's quite a story and the before/after picture are jarring.

Has burn treatment changed much in 10 years or did Nie just get really really lucky in the way she was burned (if you know what I mean). I think Nienie is still quite beautiful.

Eta: is it just me or is nie's blog only showing the most current post and nothing else? Maybe she took the diaper shot down. Finally.

Burn treatment has come on a long way. I got badly burned down my left arm 4 years ago. I tipped a pan of hot oil over my arm and had deep partial thickness burns over my arm from finger tips to just above elbow and one small area had a full thickness burn, plus a small partial thickness burn on my right wrist. I now only have mild scars over most of my arm with the one area which was full thickness which is badly scarred. After several surgical debridements I had artificial skin applied to my arm - it was amazing stuff and prevented me having to have skin grafts. After it healed I spent 6 months in pressure dressings to prevent scarring and maintain mobility and now 4 years on I have all the use of my fingers and only a slight reduction in movement on my wrist. It's so slight that it doesn't effect me at all.

My burns were small compared to Nie's and Jacqueline's obviously; mine were estimated at around 12% in total. But I don't even want to contemplate what these women went through, it was traumatic enough for me. Nie may be a fame whore and stupid for posting the pic of her daughter, but I can';t knock her for coming through her injuries and being open about them. When I was in the burns unit I was the least injured there, there was one teen boy who had climbed a pylon and got electrocuted. His clothes caught fire and you can imagine the rest. I often wonder what happened to him.

Burn injuries sound so awful, I feel so sorry for anyone who suffers from them. Sola I'm glad yours went quite well. Was the artificial stuff like a skin or the spray-on? I'm not sure if the spray-on is used everywhere yet.

I once went to a talk by this woman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiona_Wood

She's amazing! She said all sorts of things about burns and the technology and her experiences, and she was so nice. As well as being an absolutely amazing doctor, she has 6 kids! Fundies eat your hearts out

Sola, when you arrived at the hospital, did they have to scrub your burns to get rid of any material that will cause a bacterial infection? I had a friend in high school who worked at KFC and got an oil burn (a small one, maybe a few inches only) and had to have the burn area scrubbed. That sounds incredibly painful. I wondered if they give any type of local anesthetic to ease the pain. I mean, it's traumatic enough to have a burn that needs hospital care, the last thing you'd want is to intensify the pain by feeling the nurses scrub out the wound!

I'm glad you've recovered! :)

Edited to fix weird quoting.

No they didn't. Maybe it was because it was clean oil? I don't know. I had put a pan of oil into my oven to heat it for yorkshire puddings. When I took it out it was smoking hot and it spat on my right wrist which caused me to jump and tip the pan all over my left arm.

I shoved my arm under the cold tap straight away, but then was daft enough to pull off my sweatshirt (long sleeved) which had the predictable result of ripping off all the skin stuck to it. I wasn't thinking straight - I was in shock - and I know damn well that you don't pull clothing off burns but hey, wasn't thinking straight.

When the paramedics arrived (after me screaming at Mr Sola to 'get a fucking ambulance!') they irrigated it and wrapped it all up in cling film. Then they gave me entonox and morphine and I was in a happy place. I had more morphine and entonox at the hospital plus had to have morphine before dressing changes. I did get an infection though, but infections are pretty hard to avoid with burns. I also had to 4 surgical debridements to get rid of dead tissue and I almost got compartment syndrome due to my arm swelling up to twice it's normal size. I had to spend 2 days with my arm strung up above my head to try and reduce the swelling. I did have the foresight to take off my wedding ring shortly after the accident so at least I didn't have to have it cut off.

It was the sheet stuff. I didn't know they had spray on stuff, maybe that was still quite new as my accident was 4 years ago. Personally I think it's a fantastic invention. I really didn't want to have skin grafts and it was looking that I might have to - the pain from skin grafts are almost as bad as the pain from burns. The part they were debating grafting was the full thickness part, which is the part which got infected (and now has the worst scars). But in end they got the infection under control and it started to heal. The scarring doesn't really bother me as it's my arm/hand, it's not as if it's my face or anything. I just have to keep it out of the sun now so I generally wear long sleeve shirts to make that easier.
