This is pretty signifcant considering she grew up in a strict evangelical and conservative enviroment. A lot of her fans come from that backround so it will be interesting to see if she gets backlash from this. She says that she and her husband are more in line with young evangelicals who have no problem with gay marriage and that they attend a non-denominational church that is gay friendly.

I'm not surprised by this. She has never seemed extremely conservative and I also believe she is a registered Democrat. Some of her fans will be pissed and some of her fellow country stars(John Rich, Scotty McCreery,) will probably be pissed. Toby Keith, Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush and a few others in the country music business support gay marriage.

Good for her!

She's also a vegetarian (vegan, even?). Not that many veg. country singers out there...

Her hubby, Mike Fischer, is a very good hockey player. Would like him in my fave team, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

She is vegetarian and she has no issues with eating dairy products. She became vegetarian mainly because she became attached to the cattle on her parents' ranch. She has said being a vegetarian is personal choice for her and she will always respect her parents and other people who work in ranching and she also is ok with people who hunt, but she said she would never go on a hunting trip with someone. I love her attitude on those subjects.

TOBY KEITH!?!?!?!?!?!?!

No way! I would not have expected that. :o

Not surprised her husband is ok with it. He is Canadian, after all. Gay marriage has been legal from coast to coast since 2005. :flags-canada:

As far as Toby Keith is concerned, he may be a redneck Republican as far as fiscal policy, war, and gun rights are concerned, but I don't think he's particularly religious, so it's not totally surprising he's ok with it.

Toby Keith said last year that he feels gay people should be able to get married and I was a bit surprised. I agree with 3 is enough, he doesn't seem particularly religious. I would take him over major assholes like John Rich any day.

This makes me really happy. I'm a huge fan of Carrie and have been since the beginning.

Kristian bush is pretty sexy too.

Farm bot expressed an opinion? I'm more surprised at that. ;)

As someone having unpleasantness regarding marriage equality on her facebook wall from her fellow Christians (in the UK there's currently a government consultation on the subject going on), this is wonderful to hear.

I thought he was religious and the whole redneck nine yards. I am surprised, but pleased, to learn that he's not as bad as I thought (he's still a sexist dick, though, I think). But I cannot help myself--I like his music.

Who is John Rich? Is that one half of Big and Rich? Because I don't like them anyway.

Toby Keith is apparently more liberal than I thought too (based on that overplayed "Boot in your Ass" song that I can't remember the real name of). Who'd've thunk it.

John Rich is 1/2 of Big & Rich, and formerly in Lonestar (apparently back in Lonestar soon). Didn't Big & Rich make a stink a few years ago over some minor-level singer coming out? Either way, they aren't my cup of tea at all.

To the bolded: Chely Wright?

John Rich is a major bigoted asshole. He's made more than a few homophobic comments so I've heard.

I figured Toby Keith was a little bit liberal when he showed up on Stephen Colbert's Christmas special singing about a 'war on Christmas'. He had to be in on the joke.

Yes, it was Chely.

O.T. Chely Wright's book, Like Me, about coming to terms with her sexuality, and coming out, was wonderful. How anyone can read it and still believe homosexuality is a choice, I don't know. I'd highly recommend her book.

And a 2nd O.T. Lonestar is getting back together?

I'm not surprised about Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. Kristen Hall, who used to be part of their band, is out.

Wow! I did not realise she was this cool. I didn't know much about her but I'm impressed.

I don't really know too much about Ms. Underwood. Admittedly, most of what I know comes from People magazine. My MIL likes me to share her love of the periodical, so I get a subscription every year. It's my bathtub entertainment once a week, and gives us something to talk about on the phone. She just "loves that George Clooney!"

Come to think of it, I guess I know:

A) She is a blond AI winner, who has achieved standalone, legit success in the Country music world.

B) She sang "Jesus Take The Wheel", which is a scream.

C) She got married to a hockey player, and she looked really happy in her wedding pictures.

And now this, which is a good thing to read. I am impressed that gay rights have made so much progress in my lifetime. Miles to go, and all that, but this is very encouraging. Doesn't mean I am going to stop fighting for equal rights, but I have read that over 50% of Young Republicans are pro-gay marriage. I hope to see it become one of those things that Americans wonder "Well why couldn't gay people get married? That makes no sense." Because it doesn't!

does scream mean something positive or negative in this context? Sorry, if this is a silly question. I just never heard this expression before.

thank you, freejoytoo!

My BIL said before he heard the song he thought it was about someone driving and spilling coffee on themself and exclaiming "Jesus, take the wheel!!" to the passenger while they tried to get the burning liquid off.

No problem ophelia :) I'm reading a book in French atm and struggling with the slang!

I don't know much about Carrie Underwood either, apart from that Jesus Take the Wheel song. Pleasantly surprised, I assumed she'd be on the opposite side of the fence.

I've always really liked Carrie because she has an AMAZING voice unlike a lot of "singers" nowadays *coughTaylorSwiftcough*. She's always seemed like a pretty cool chick too, so this is just another point in her favor!
