Duggars & Maxwells & ATI

We know that the Duggars are ATI, full-on Gothardites. Of that there is no doubt.

We also know that the Duggars use the MOTH schedule as well as Maxwell Chorepacks, and that the Maxwells have had sweet times of fellowship with the Duggars at their compound while traveling the country to sell their stuff minister to the masses and save some souls.

I don't believe, however, that the Maxwells are ATI and in fact, I think Steve would recoil at the notion of following anyone but Himself.

Am I right about that, or is there a Maxwell/ATI connection of which I am not aware?

There is no way they are ATI. From their blog they are some form of reformed Baptist, and while I know you can be ATI and attend whatever church, I think most of them attend churches with other ATI's for the sake of monitoring each other.

Steve is far to into his own interpretation of the Bible to follow anyone else. Steve firmly follows his own rules of power and control. Putting someone else in charge of what he could believe and must follow would be an idol situation and we know he does not do the idol thing.

I don't think they are ATI either. Steve-O would never be ok with wife and children following Gothard.

The maxwells are too out there to join any organization. They constantly talk of avoiding engaging in other groups/orgs because no one can have the same standards as the Maxwells. God forbid their children end up exposed to non Steve approved thoughts.

I can't imagine that the Maxwells went so fundy without EVER having been involved with an organisation like ATI, though... people usually need encouragement for that kind of crazy.

Agreed. FJers have their gateway fundies, super fundy fundies probably have their gateway organizations, lol.

if Steve-O and gothard got together they could rule the fundy world.

Here is Steve and Teri's testimony and their early years of fundiedom (Scroll down about halfway for their testimony).

It sounds like they were introduced to it by a very conservative preacher Steve met at their college. In time, they attended his church, and they were off and running.

I know in his Dad's Corner, he talks about them attending a "biblical" church in Florida, (albeit one that allowed vasectomies!!).

So it appears they just got this nuts through their churches, and by God speaking to and through Steve.

It's possible they were part of ATI, but I see no mention of it, even in their old stuff through the wayback machine.

Here's the testimony (Scroll a bit);

I don't think they are ATI. They may follow some of the principles but I think that ATI is too worldly for them, plus Steve wouldn't have anyone other than himself as the family idol.

I don't see Steve-o turning loose of any of his love offering money to pay for ATI dues/fees/whatever you have to pay to Gothard. Steve-o is the big boss man. No one is above Steve-o. Not even God because Steve-o is God... or so he thinks.

I'm so behind in this one area - who are the Maxwells?

This is their blog - titus2.com/blog/

You can check out the fundie reference guide stickied at the top of the forum when you run across people you aren't familiar with, too.

ATI already has designated idols, er, um, leaders. Stevie would never play second fiddle to someone else or follow anyone else's rules. They don't even attend church because that is too much exposure to the evil real world for the precious Maxwell offspring (and probably Steve; I can imagine even in a fundie church some women being defrauding and needing their headship to step up to the plate so Steve doesn't bust into tears at the sight of them).

Posted

They were indeed at one time with ATI. They have made mention of using Wisdom Booklets. Apparently ATI was too liberal and drew their children's hearts away from the proper place- home/Steve.

Hmm.... I can't decide if they scare me more or less than the Duggars. I'm looking at their blog. Not entirely sure who is who...

Okay, just found the About Us...

So are they bff with the Duggars too?

Posted

They have been known to associate with the Duggars on one or two occasions but I think it's more of an acknowledgement of all the publicity they've gotten through them (the Duggars are supposedly fans of their MOTH schedules), rather than any real friendship. I think Steve would find them far too worldly.

And the Maxwells are Free Will baptists, not reformed baptists (Opposite ends of the Bapo spectrum. I'm sure Steve would be happy to condemn all Calvinists to hell).

The Duggars? Worldly? Almost seems like an oxymoron.

How deep do the Maxwells go?

Just do a forum search and/or read their blog as far back as it goes. They are one of the most talked about families so there is too much info to condense into a summary for you.

The Duggars occasionally do things they enjoy. That puts them on the slippery slope to hell, as far as SteveMax is concerned.

They scare me more than the Duggars. The Maxwells are very bland. They don't have any fun on holidays and there are some holiday traditions that they are against. Steve also encouraged his children that there isn't a need for friendships outside the family.

The Duggars are very controlling, but they aren't as bad as the Maxwells. The Duggars allow their kids to at least make friends with the kids of other fundie families. The Maxwells would never do stuff like that. The Duggars at least do fun things here and there.

Is that right? I don't recall the mention of Wisdom Booklets. Do you recall where you read that?

Yeah, I read the whole "Easter bunnies will make kids forget Jesus" etc..

So what do these people do all day? How did they manage to get them married off?

It would have been in one of their Corners or books. They have a couple of books that have compiled Corners from the early years when they were running their local home-school group and put out a monthly newsletter. That's where the name "Corners" came from. The articles were just a corner of the newsletter at that time.

Just when I think they can't get more predictable...

They think it's what *they* are doing that will get them to Heaven when they croak. "We follow [a Bible passage] perfectly and so had you better!"

Gah! Mere Xianity says, "Jesus followed the law [as seen in The Bible] perfectly so you don't have to. Simply believe, and you are saved. Knowing you are saved, serve -- but do it joyfully and NEVER think your service gets you into Heaven."

Steve, Teri & their old pastor turn a faith of beauty and confidence into a scheme of never-ending sourness and worry.

I just want to slap my forehead when I think of them.

I haven't been on this board for awhile - I felt like I was spending too much time getting too involved in these weird people's lives. But then I went to the Maxwell blog to get an update on the pregnant ladies and here I am again! The Maxwells fascinate and repel me, at the same time. Their insular little world is just so picture-perfect, isn't it? Everyone's heart belongs to Steve and all is right in Maxland.

I just can't fathom why a parent would CHOOSE to keep all their adult children so close to the nest - for me, one of the best parts of parenting was watching my children go out there and experience things in the world and pursue their own interests. Steve and Teri's parenting is just a control thing. It's not really parenting. You're not equipping your child for anything but Bible-reading if you follow the Maxwell philosophy.

I hate these winds. They are absolutely HOWLING here in SoCal. Not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'm so afraid we'll get sudden evacuation orders the way we did with the Woolsey fire in 2018. There's no way of knowing when and where a fire might crop up and once it does, there's no containing it in these winds. I'm praying for the safety of our brave firefighters. My heart is with everyone in the Pacific Palisades and in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena.

The world doesn't need more people. If people want to have children, that's fine, but there is no reason we have to keep having more people.

      Winter snack: crispy chickpeas
Preheat oven to 400 F. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, then toss in olive oil and whatever spices you like. I use fried chili crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, stir, another 15 minutes, stir, repeat until they're crispy and delicious. Good as a snack, on salads, etc.
I am sharing my super secret chili crisp source just because I love you guys:

Happy New Year, all you amazing people! I just saw a (possibly joking) tradition online called Yule Boasting.

      My quick text version:
i will begin 2025 by distilling a barrel full of tequila from the agave plants in my yard, assisted by george clooney, who admires me greatly and will be sad and heartbroken when my plan moves ahead without further human assistance.
sky-clad, i will find my familiar, a malevolently clever curve-billed thrasher named Willie Wildman. together we will roam my neighborhood, putting together an animal army consisting of a coyote pack, a squadron of javelinas, and my local great horned owl pair, perseverance and ingenuity.
we will all consume mass quantities of tequila, paint our faces blue, and set out on yucca broomsticks to reach our nation's capitol.
we will swoop down on DC, screaming and howling, occupying first the capitol and then the white house, where we will become co-presidents and replace congress with the yacht-sinking orcas of the mediterranean. AND EVERYONE WILL FUCKING REJOICE.

It's crazy to think that it has already been 25 years since we were worried about what would happen when the calendars would switch over to Y2K.
