A catchy tune from the 1920's about gender bending, it shows that this gender destruction thing is not a new thing that fundies constantly go on about

Yeeeah, It's called individuality. Look it up some time. It's going to be around whether you like it or not.

Thanks, that is some intersting info and considering how popular it was in the 20's it is amazing

Interesting, but maybe not so amazing. :D

Nerd alert -- old music and film is an interest of mine!

Popular culture has always included interest in sex and gender, and people have always complained about the younger generation. I imagine that the complaints of any century may have extended to "not being able to tell the girls from the boys," depending on what fashion had been like previously.

And the 1920s and early 30s included a fair amount of mainstream material that embraced gender-bending and gay characters, not to mention independent women, anti-heroes, etc.

In 1934, the Motion Picture Production Code began being enforced more strongly, which led to several decades of movies with very little cursing, no sympathetic gay (or gay-appearing) characters (unless they died before the end of the film), no unpunished crime or infidelity, the originally-married couple always destined to get back together after separation or divorce, etc.

Since a lot of popular music through that era was introduced in films or used in them, much of it followed suit (or there was a cleaned-up film lyric, which was the only one some folks heard).

So a sort of false "folks didn't know about this stuff in the old days" image was created.
