One thing that struck me is, all of the women, not just Maxwells, are wearing below the knee skirts. I'd never fit in to that neighborhood. I'd show up in shorts if the weather was warm, and probably be escorted out before the shower began. (Preferably by John).

Aside from the fact that it's rude for family members to host a shower, I'd be more than a little annoyed if I went to a baby shower and found myself listening to a sermon.

Kinda OT, but I feel sad every time they show pics of that little niece. She is soooo cute and seems spunky but eventually she will be "meek and quiet" whether she wants to or not.

The invitations (likely written by Steve) probably indicated that only modestly attired women would be allowed in the Maxwell compound.

I know! I'm far too hedonistic to be allowed at a Maxwell function. Too bad because they throw rocking parties :character-beavisbutthead:

I don't have a Maxwell crush but I wish every one of those adult children would find someone to corrupt them lol.

That black and white picture of Sarah by herself was really nice. I've also noticed in the last few pictures of ReversalAnna that her hair looked straightened and pretty. I wonder if they're putting up more pictures of themselves looking good to sort of advertise "Hey, we're available! Husbands wanted!"

I noticed the cake had a psalm on it. No regular "congratulations" cake allowed for a Maxwell shower!

I had no idea that Anna Marie's hair was soooo long. If she would cut it and do some curly girl on it, I bet it would look really healthy and pretty.

And ReversalAnna's hair is super long now too, but it looks healthy and pretty.

Holy cow, they actually played shower games? Aren't those designed to be, you know, fun?

That's what I immediately thought! They probably had to read their bible for 4 hours a day instead of 2 to make up for the fun. How sad!

I'm surprised there was no fuss at all made of Melanie. I know she probably has all the big stuff already but it's a shame not to put her name on the cake and buy her new little one some onsies or whatever .... :?

Also, don't the mothers get pampering gifts, too?

Too bad there wasn't anybody NR Anna's age at her own shower. R Anna or Sarah would be the closest. I'm sure the neighbors are aware of the "modesty" rule and I'm impressed that there are so many willing to accommodate them. It must be a pretty loving neighborhood. Interesting considering most of them are probably heathen according to the Maxwells. It's pretty easy to distribute cookies with tracts compared to respecting someone's clothing convictions enough to dress so as to "not offend".

Let her have her moment. Why should Anna Marie have to share a that little amount of attention too? The focus has probably been on Mel because her pregs are always so high risk.

And not just a psalm, but the Quiverfull Verse. Hope you like being pregnant NRAnna, because this is only the beginning. I love their reasoning behind the shower:

The shower idea was initiated by Abby. She loved reading about the twins’ baby shower in Spring with the Moodys. About four years ago, the ladies in the neighborhood had thrown a shower for Melanie and Abby. We thought we’d host a shower this time for Anna Marie!

I'm totally sure the shower idea was actually initiated by a toddler. I always thought it was weird how the little girls couldn't seem to ask the adults in their lives for anything, but now I think the Maxwell women just use them as scapegoats. They know if they came up with an idea for a fun event it would be shot down, so they put the idea in Abby or Bethany's head because the little girls can get away with it. And of course, we can't resist an unsolicited plug for the Moody books

I don'T think it was such a neighborhood party as at the end they say:

It was a very special evening, celebrating the upcoming birth of Baby Maxwell with our friends from the area.

I am going to say it; is this dress the most flattering she has? I mean if you are going to be the center of attention are you not going to wear something.... fitting? Nice? Out of the ordinary?

She could look so great...

I don't know it was possible to make me depressed about a baby shower but they've done it!

I'll give her a bit of a pass here. I know she makes most of her clothes, and she probably just made the easiest and most comfortable thing she could find. For we who worked outside the home while pregnant, finding professional looking maternity clothes that didn't break the bank was a pain in the ass. You don't want to buy tents, but you don't want to grow quickly out of what you buy either. It's not an easy time to be fashionable, so you just do the best you can. That's probably what NR-Anna did.

If she wanted to wear something fitting nice or out of the ordinary she would not have been suited to be a Maxwell.

Because then it can be seen as a gimme gifts occasion.

SL_babyshowerwho_WOTraditionally, close friends, cousins, aunts, sisters-in-law, or coworkers of the mother-to-be hosted baby showers. Because gifts are central to showers, hosting by a member of the honoree's (or husband's) immediate family appeared self-serving. Today it is appropriate for anyone to host a baby shower as long as there's a legitimate reason. For example, some parents-to-be live far from their hometowns, and their mothers and siblings want to host a shower so that longtime friends can attend.

There are no guests present who are in the same age category as NR Anna or the Maxi adult children.

Maybe they didn't pass muster, or they know better than to show up and then be on that blog or maybe Maxwells are the only adult children in the neighbourhood, or maybe they are away at real school or at work. Or maybe Steve edited them out.

(Tradition here is for either very close friends or family to host showers. Perhaps is a regional difference?)

Almost all the showers around here are hosted by family.

"Mrs. L" looked to be about as pregnant as NR Anna, so she is, at least, still in her fertile years. Probably closer to Sarah's age in the spectrum though (but isn't NRAnna in her mid-20's herself?).

My thoughts EXACTLY.

I'm looking at the "The whole group" picture, and all of the non-family attendees look to be the age or peers of Teri, if not older. There's even some of Teh Elderly .

Not that there's anything wrong with varied age people coming to a baby shower, but it's striking that there are no women there who seem to be NR Anna's age at all. It almost looks as if "well, we gathered together random people on our street" or something. Perhaps it's the odd way they write, but they never seem to have ongoing actual relationships with ANYONE. Perhaps Mrs. L, maybe (at least she got a name, and she went to the trouble of knitting a bunch of sweaters, which is no small thing).

Even super fundie people you'd think they have some f...f...F...FRIENDS (whew! Said it!) from a Bible study or cooking group or even just other households on the street. Other wives of their husbands coworkers, that sort of thing even?

Just shows how set apart the Maxwells are.

Also what is up with "ladies" "ladies" - how about WOMEN?

I will criticize no one's choice of maternity wear given what I myself wore when pregnant. I don't think the outfit was any better or worse than what they usually wear and I did like her hair down though the ends could use a trim! I am sure Melanie will have some sort of shower, remember, her family doesn't live far away live NR-Anna's so, maybe some of them will do something. We will never see it because it would be an acknowledgement that Melanie actually has a family outside of the Maxwell cult!
