Teri's is "mahh", just about not being lazy. Daddy is on "fire" again after schools, particularly charter schools. Of course, "their" onramp "school" is OK!

P.S. Poor Teri can't even buy a bathroom rug on her own. Steve has to "help". Me, I just run down to Bed & Bath. I wonder if the girls have ever been in a shopping mall. I'll bet Steve has them convinced they are full of lust & nakked people..... I wonder if the girls even drive. Could you imagine being 30, living in the 'burbs and not being able to drive....

I'll admit TL;DR, but i did catch this gem from Teri's blog

The work He sets before us is a blessing not a curse.

I am doing laundry right now, I do not feel blessed.

Oh my God! I actually agree with Steve here:

It is important that our children become lifelong learners. I believe when a person stops learning, they will likely stop growing and begin to shrivel up mentally.

And then he loses me. That was fast.

The caution is always to guard our minds and choose to learn only things that do not compromise our convictions.

Umm...what? If your convictions are so fragile that you can't handle having them challenged, then they're not convictions. Why is it okay for Steve to challenge the convictions of non-believers, but it's not okay for a non-believer to challenge Steve?

He blathers on:

In addition, we must be cautious to learn in a safe environment. You may want to visit ITonRamp.com, a new website that we launched in May. The goal is to equip young people and parents with new skills through long-distance courses.

Ahhh...here's the whole point of this month's Corner. Pimp the business. You're so concerned about godless public schools and co-op homeschools? Well, Steve has the answer for you! Just join the 1 Ton Ramp! What, you mean your kid has no interest in computers? You want to know how you'll teach math and English? Never mind that. All little Jedidiah Jr. needs is some basic IT skills, and he, too, can be a belt-wielding patriarch like Steve! Your daughters can learn how to answer phones for the family business with a cheerful voice that hides the years of oppressive verbal and physical abuse.

Yes, Steve, the 1 Ton Ramp is the solution to all of our educational needs.

You know, if I was Christopher, I would be a bit pissed off that Pa Maxwell is always pimping Nathan's ventures buy nary a word on his. Guess we know who the favorite son is.

Also I have a mountain of laundry to do. I'm going to pray over the pile and maybe it will wash itself overnight.

Wait, I thought a major part of learning was being exposed to things that introduced you to new ideas, and that part of finding out what your convictions really are includes having them challenged and comparing them to other beliefs. Apparently I'm doing it wrong again.

I have laundry in the washer now. I think I'm going to tell my husband I'm going in there to pray over it. Maybe then, while he has me committed, it will get folded and some of this other damn housework will get done.

1 Ton Onramp Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Steve, I've seen people who choose to only keep "learning" in one specific area (typically religiously-based). They're shriveling like prunes and getting pissed when they proselytize to people they think need religion and keep being told NO!

I need to vacuum tomorrow; shall I pray that the machine runs itself around the house and empties out the canister all by itself? Here's hoping!

I think I'll pray that the Lord will cause my tile floors to get mopped by themselves tomorrow and that suddenly all my thing get put away that are still sitting in boxes.

And FWIW learning never stops, just Steve-O's common sense.

ANd don't forget Itonramp is only for Godly BOYS. Girls don't need no IT skillz. The only thing girls look up on the big computer thingie is recipes and frumper patterns on sites pre approved by daddy. I guess you could pay the money for thr course for Melanie to encourage you,hey....that might be worth it if she would gossip. :)

I prayed over my dirty kitchen, 10 minutes ago when I first read this - just checked, it is still dirty. Obviously I am 'ye of little faith'.

Yesterday I went on a sweaty womanly romp (tiptoe, actually) on a jury-rigged scaffold to paint my stairwell, and I feel blessed that I did not fall and the walls look fabulous.

I will go check the kitchen again, and see if my faith has improved enough to make it clean itself. (I honestly used to believe that bullcrap, that my prayers were not answered because my faith was not strong enough. AAAAAAAAAARGH).

Plus you should make your own laundry soap at home, then you will feel much more blessed, and also save the difference.

Oh. My. God.

where do I begin? Steves corner:

The whole business of learning-why do the Maxwells think life long learning is individual to them and maybe a few more Godly homeschoolers? EVERYBODY is always learning something new, be it the teeniest of things such as what foods not to mix together or not to go out in shoes too big for you, to how to change a tyre, how to use a new computer program, how install a TV etc. We don't even always realise how much we have learnt. I was helping a boy I know with his spanish homework once, having never learnt it myself, yet suddenly realized I had in fact picked up a few words when I went to Spain. We all leanr! Idiots (the Maxwells, not you guys :) )

"Over the twenty years that we have encouraged homeschool families, we have observed that once a homeschooling mom leaves the house with her children for an activity such as a field trip, doctor's appointment, or errand, little school work is accomplished when they return home"

This is coming from a family who spend weeks at a time travelling on their trips? Clearly, not much schooling happens for most of the year. This is a family who imply their children are always going out to help people like the neighbors or Melanie, or are speaking at conferences. They clearly don't get much accomplished in that case.

" I believe when a person stops learning, they will likely stop growing and begin to shrivel up mentally. Teach your children to work and give them a love for learning"

In that case Steve, walk the walk. Teach your children something other than the Bible perhaps? How much more is there to learn about the only book you all read at least twice a day?

As for Teri:

"Our labor would be the choice to set ourselves to the tasks that allow us to love and care for our husbands, our children, and our homes. I think the "talk of the lips" would equate to time wasters such as sitting doing nothing, reading novels, Internet browsing and blog hopping, frivolous shopping, or large amounts of time on the phone"

Um, again, this is coming from a family who have a blog.....rely on people hopping through this blog to bring them business.....often update that blog every day (in fact I am sure I have sen the blog updated up to 4 times a day before, especially when they are on conferences).....and frivolous shopping? How long do these people take picking out food for their guinee pigs?

This family are such a bunch of hypocrites painful

ETA to improve my ungodly spelling

I hope that if you are a wife, you did not go and read Steve's corner. Only the husbands are supposed to read that one. It's OK for the husbands to read Teri's, though.

So a top-notch education only exposes you to thoughts you already think and ideas you already have, and reading novels is sinful.

Gotcha.

Oh. My. God.

where do I begin? Steves corner...

SRSLY. I've wondered this for quite some time now - they don't allow their children to read ANY secular books. At all. Which means that they pretty much read the Bible, and (I suppose, just grasping for straws here!) some commentaries on it by authorities they approve of, if there are any.

That's not much material, and like you said, how much more can they possibly learn just reading the Bible again and again and again and again and again? To be charitable, it might count for meditation at this point, but that's not at all the same thing as learning.

Something else that's not learning? Refusing to challenge any ideas - oh sorry, "convictions" - that you currently have.

Meanwhile, the Maxwells are hardly alone in this, but yeah, it seems that so many of the Christian homeschooling set firmly believe that somehow the idea of homeschooling, or even organized learning on your own as adults, is limited to their little circle. THEY know how to Do It Right, they are the only ones doing it, surely everyone else in the world only rots their brain with porn on TV in the evenings after coming back from either the workplace or the asylum that is the public school, where of course they teach only "twaddle" with a side-helping of homosexual studies. "Ow, My Balls!"

It is to laugh. I was introduced to the fascinating world of fundies via homeschooling groups, because I was looking for resources to help tutor others (to teach them how to homeschool themselves, in fact!!) and ideas to improve my own learning. Because wow, you know, there are a lot of secular working adults who DO come home, after a full day out of the house even, and yet set aside time to actually study things. In an organized manner, even. Sometimes with (gasp!) schedules. Sometimes they even help their kids study!

I've said before that one reason I find the Maxwells so fascinating is that they are SO extremely alien to me (plus their bus - gotta admit the bus is cool), but a big part of that is that by my standards, they come off as extremely anti-intellectual (particularly after reading threads about how limited their schooling is - part of the reason their homeschooling plan works so well for them is the amount is limited, other people need to make significant tweaks). So it's interesting to see them talking about learning, but of course there's the "must not put ourselves in danger of challenging certain ideas we already hold" caveat.

Encouraging work I see as a good thing. Teaching kids the skill of putting off some fun to get the work done first I think is a good thing. I just don't think you need to completely eliminate fun to do it.

This is the perfect way to ignorance and hate. When fear rules your learning you are in trouble.

This is the most fundamental difference between me - and most people - and fundie freaks. Personally, I hope I never live a day without learning something new, that I'd never heard of before and not only that which fits in my existing views. If I ever had to live a life without other viewpoints and opinions, other ideas, other morals and beliefs and values, I may as well be dead.

Every human being is a life long learner. It's only Stevie and those like him who think there is a life of learning only within certain boundaries. They are not learning. They are reciting and repeating and regurgitating what they're told.

If their faith is so weak that an opposing perspective can shake it, they're doing it wrong.

I actually think that most people are more like Steve Maxwell than most people think. I know very few adults who are curious and engaged in the world. There is a fundamental failure to consider other points of view. You can see it in every religious and political group.

If reading novels is a sinful waste of time, why does the family make a living from Sarah's series of books?

"They will pay their property tax bills (much goes to public and charter schools and state colleges) without the "benefit" of having their children's education funded in order to avoid the godless, promiscuity-promoting, humanistic environment that the state system provides."

I could barely get past that part....
