Does anyone know what happened? Here is the text:

As of today, the blog is on indefinite hiatus. I may be done blogging; I don't know. Regardless, the content already here will remain. Please refrain from emailing me, as I won't be checking the account.

After an incredibly inappropriate breach of my privacy, I think this blog has gotten out of control. This is no longer a safe space, so I'd rather fade back into the obscurity of the internet.

Good luck to all of you.

I don't know what happened, but the words "Internet" and "obscurity" don't go together.

Aw, shoot.

No idea what happened, but I wish her all the best.

Wow, that came out of left field. She posted a lengthy post about pets just last week. I have mixed feelings, to be honest; on the one hand, I actually half expected a flounce during the whole drama with Chaviva or else for Skylar to fade away after her conversion was complete. Without knowing anything about what happened to prompt her to shut down now, it's not cool to go violating someone's boundaries and/or privacy just because you read their blog. That said, I found it quite shocking that she just gave out her name and so many details of her identity so freely, and I kind of wondered at the time whether that might yield issues down the line.

Whatever's going on, I hope it gets resolved and she keeps blogging.

That's what I find sort of odd - she has put so much of her personal information out there it seems like it would be kind of hard to breach her privacy. I hadn't been on here much over the weekend and I thought maybe something went down, but it looks like that's not the case.

Oh well. To be honest, I found her blog had an extremely negative tone. For instance, her whole post about Passover and how it's a crash diet (wtf?) you're missing a whole food group and it's so hard wah wah. I know it was a little bit tongue in cheek but come on. Passover is not that bad. There's no reason to be missing out on an entire food group just because you can't eat leaven.

Anyway, I know others disagree, just my two cents.

Maybe Jacob Stein was threatening/harassing her.

I'm with you Beeks. Her blog was basically.... for me anyways "more reasons why I could NOT pull off being Orthodox"

So you can't have bread. You can still have carbs. Hi, potatoes! My mom made some KICK ASS fried chicken for me- she dipped it in egg, and then breaded it in matzah. In FACT it was SO GOOD, that I may start making fried chicken that way from now on. It was that delicious. In fact, I think that may be dinner tonight. *drools*

Yum, that does sound good. I made a matzo/onion/mushroom kugel a few years back and my husband requests it year round now. He also requests matzo ball soup every single friday night, when before I met him I only ever had it for Pesach. Passover is my favorite holiday and I think moaning about the food is just part of the culture - it can be really good but whenever I say that people are like, omg, you LIKE matzo?! EwWww!

I hate it by itself but its incredibly useful at the end of a pay period and you have a box of matzah a jar of spaghetti sauce and some cheese- PIZZA! yeah!

Its my favorite holiday too. :)

I couldn't be Orthodox either! I did like learning about new things from Skylar, though - I'd never even HEARD of mevushal wine before reading her blog. (And now my goyische husband is all proud of himself for seeing it on the label of the kosher wine we got and knowing what it means. :) )

I'm pretty sure my mother used to use egg and matzo meal for breading fish. I'm now vegetarian so have never bothered to follow that up. Hmm, can I do that with a carrot, I wonder...?

Oh, and we're out of bread and as we're about to go out of town for a few days, we just used matza instead. He ate ham and cheese on that matza. Together. And yes, he understands the irony. :D

LOL. I'm not a fan of ham period, so even though I'm a Reform convert, i woudln't touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole.

It's an odd way to end a blog. If she has security concerns, why leave her information up for the World and her Aunt to see?

Matza with nutella is awesome! lol

The whole "I won't be checking my email" thing is a bit strange too. I wonder if it had something to do with her employment? She's an attorney, right?

I'd really appreciate a few kugel recipes over on the food threads. I adore kugels and would like to master one or two.

Carry on.

I would too. The one time I made a kugel it was an epic fail. It tasted good but it never "set" like it was supposed to. I just ended up with.. flavored noodles.

Posted

Have you ever tried them with honey and black pepper? omg, it's like heaven.

No! I only got to know about matza last year because my roomate then came back from passover with tons of matza and she needed help to eat them :P

Posted

I'll go post the kugel recipe in the recipe thread....keep in mind it's not a traditional kugel (no noodles) b/c it's for Passover. It's yummy though!

Skylar had a post up today for Yom HaShoah. So her flounce lasted what, 3 days??? Or do you think this was just one she had scheduled and forgot to delete? Strange.

Posted

Yeah, it's weird- and the Yom HaShoah post reads as if nothing happened at all, so maybe it's an old, pre-scheduled post. She also (rather pedantically) lectured a few people on the flounce post who were making comments about stalking and the like, saying that she hasn't given any information out about what happened, so people shouldn't assume, yadda yadda. It struck me as very odd, since the post itself certainly implied that someone (well-meaning, perhaps, but with no sense of boundaries) was stalking her or, at the very least, tracked her down in real life somehow. It also seems a bit surprising to me that she's leaving all of her old posts up, presumably unedited, as they contain a hell of a lot of personal information, and even if she doesn't blog further, I don't see how that would prevent this from happening again. I find the whole thing a bit confusing, really.

Posted

What kind of sense does it make to say your security has been breached right after saying you will leave the content of your blog up? It's kind of like if I went out of my way to tell people I'm upset that the lock on one of my doors is broken so I'm stopping using it but I won't bother trying to fix it.

Posted

Perhaps she thought that people posting comments that dare to disagree with her was a threat to her privacy. It's not like we're dealing with the brightest bulbs in the world, after all.

Posted

Did you read her bitching out a commenter for taking issue with her writing "Jew" in quotes for Holocaust victims? Holy crap what a complete and total B.

Posted

She got contacted by some truly crazy people. I don't blame her for quitting.

ETA: And it wasn't about her email, it was about her personal details, like her address.

Welcome to the internet.

And apparently she only quit for 3 days.

I hate these winds. They are absolutely HOWLING here in SoCal. Not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'm so afraid we'll get sudden evacuation orders the way we did with the Woolsey fire in 2018. There's no way of knowing when and where a fire might crop up and once it does, there's no containing it in these winds. I'm praying for the safety of our brave firefighters. My heart is with everyone in the Pacific Palisades and in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena.

The world doesn't need more people. If people want to have children, that's fine, but there is no reason we have to keep having more people.

      Winter snack: crispy chickpeas
Preheat oven to 400 F. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, then toss in olive oil and whatever spices you like. I use fried chili crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, stir, another 15 minutes, stir, repeat until they're crispy and delicious. Good as a snack, on salads, etc.
I am sharing my super secret chili crisp source just because I love you guys:

Happy New Year, all you amazing people! I just saw a (possibly joking) tradition online called Yule Boasting.

      My quick text version:
i will begin 2025 by distilling a barrel full of tequila from the agave plants in my yard, assisted by george clooney, who admires me greatly and will be sad and heartbroken when my plan moves ahead without further human assistance.
sky-clad, i will find my familiar, a malevolently clever curve-billed thrasher named Willie Wildman. together we will roam my neighborhood, putting together an animal army consisting of a coyote pack, a squadron of javelinas, and my local great horned owl pair, perseverance and ingenuity.
we will all consume mass quantities of tequila, paint our faces blue, and set out on yucca broomsticks to reach our nation's capitol.
we will swoop down on DC, screaming and howling, occupying first the capitol and then the white house, where we will become co-presidents and replace congress with the yacht-sinking orcas of the mediterranean. AND EVERYONE WILL FUCKING REJOICE.

It's crazy to think that it has already been 25 years since we were worried about what would happen when the calendars would switch over to Y2K.
