In the 1980s?

Wouldn't be surprising to me to hear this about any european countrie or the US up to the middle of the 60s, regardless of religion, but this is... well... *no words*

Had to think about the Magdalene-laundires-movie, too, the heartbreaking scene when they take the newborn from Rose and her parents do not talk to her and send her to the laundries.

This doesn't surprise me at all. It reminds me of the Tennessee Children's Home ring.

The infamous Georgia Tann. It was she who began charging money for adoptions. She also started the practice of amended birth certificates and sealed records. So many of the children placed through her black market ring were never able to find their birth families because she destroyed records. She actually out and out kidnapped babies and children. A large number of babies and children died while in her home and care. She was an evil woman.

The Magdalene Laundries did not close until 1997.

Didn't read the link, but was it in Spain??

reminds me of Argentina in the mid-late 70s...

It must be so bizarre if you were adopted in, say, 1978 in Buenos Aires by an upper-class couple. You missed nothing in your life, and they paid your schooling + gave you as much affection as they did your sister, who wasn't adopted. Your parents told you as a chid that you were adopted but that your bio Mom died giving birth at 16 yrs-old. You thought that it's sad but oh well. Could have ended up in a worst family.

Then in 2004 you receive a letter from the Grandmothers of the Plaza of May...Your bio mother was killed after your birth, she wasn't 16 she was 26 and a militant in a union affiliated with the socialists. Your bio grandmother is very persistant in her contacts and wants to meet you. For one year you refuse, then you receive a court order for a DNA test. Yup, bio grandma was right.

How would you react? Were your adoptive parents lying or did they just accept what was told to them without questions??

I believe in the case of Argentina the majority, if not all, the adoptive parents knew as most were high ranking people in the government and military.

In El Salvador there were hundreds of babies and children stolen by the military and presented at orphanages as orphans. The adoptive parents of these children, many in the U.S., had no knowledge of this. The orphanages did not know. It was a very chaotic time in the country (1980's), many children were orphaned, others became separated from their families, and still others were kidnapped by soldiers. I know many such Salvadoran adoptees, most have adoptive parents who support and help them reconnect with their Salvadoran families. The Salvadoran government provides them copies of their entire adoption files and they search for the birth parents at no cost to the adoptees.

Or hell, a friend of a friend of somebody who was in a not a militant, but in a union associated with socialists. What happened during the Dirty Wars is so fucked up.

" In one case, a Madrid hospital kept a dead newborn in a freezer to show moms to prove their babies had died."

 how messed up is that?

I wonder what they did with all the money? They must have made millions.
