College is a scam!

This was posted on a Christian Homeschooling site I lurk on.

The OP had some, uh, strong opinions on college for her children (satan's greatest achievement-the American university). I will give most of the responders credit. They are conservative Christian women, but most disagreed with her, some very sharply.

ETA: Apparently this poster also thinks proper capitalization is also a scam.

Proper puncutation, is also "a scam".

One of the responses is great, she pointed out that college is a time for questioning and doubt and some people adopt religion and others cast it off.

From one of the responses:

PS....I write this after about a year of coming to terms with leaving an unsaved child of mine solely in the hands of God. I don't know what his future holds, but I know I can only do what God has called me to do. And that only God can change his heart. I honestly try to not think about his future too much

I wonder if this is how a fundy family would refer to an adult child who has converted to another religion (perhaps for marriage?).

Many of the responses were intelligent.

I've had similar conversations. My thoughts are that while I would ideally look for a fairly positive university environment (I'm not funding a party school), I know that there will be hostile elements. Part of my job as a parent is preparing my child to deal with that, so that they are prepared for those challenges.

I wouldn't say that university taught me how to think - I went to a public high school that was somewhat alternative/libertarian, which really taught me that. What it did teach me was how to find and defend my views when bombarded by extreme viewpoints. It was a setting that upset my equilibrium, and it wasn't possible to look around that figure out what was "normal" based on the views of everybody else. I had to dig deep and figure it out myself.

The ironic thing is that I was pretty left-wing and not that religious when I entered university. I became more conservative and religious partly in reaction to the completely bonkers off-the-map variety of socialism that I encountered, which was quite different than the pretty mild version that I associated with my mother and grandmother.
