Hindu Yogurt.

This is from the Malley's website, Grace Notes. Although Sarah Malley did not write this article, it is about her dad

brothersandsisters.net/gracenotes/

While eating breakfast at the hotel a few mornings ago, my dad read the writing under the top of his yogurt container. It was one of Dannon’s “light and fit†tips – something that only a few unique individuals in this world actually take the time to notice. [smile]

It read, “…reduce stress with some alone time. Even a half hour can help you reach your nirvana.â€

“This is Hindu yogurt!†Dad exclaimed.

For some reason, the stupidity of this statement made me laugh. Fundies are a parody of themselves. I

After reading the quote, he decides to use it to convert the poor front desk person to Christianity.

They ought to put a Bible verse on this!†Dad continued.

“You should write to them,†the man suggested

What else was the man supposed to say? His job depends on being nice to the hotel's guests.

Shouldn't they be making their OWN yogurt, anyway? Plenty of blog posts to show them how! Hop to it, girls [sic].

Its nice to see someone speak up about this! It seems that in many situations today ‘inspirational’ messages like this most often include Hindu or Buddhist ideas, like it is assumed that that will not offend anyone but a Christian message would. Perhaps they should have put ‘find peace’ rather than ‘reach your nirvana’!

My Sunday paper carried a full page ad for a church's Easter service. On Friday, I heard a local tv ad by a pastor give a salvation message. It isn't unusual in the south to pass Jesus Saves signs. A local business used to have a bible verses on their sign even though the verses had nothing to do with the sheds that they sold.

I'm fine with Christians expressing their faith. However, other faiths and belief systems should be heard also.

There are plenty of places with Christian messages on their merchandise and/or bags: Chik-Fil-A, Forever 21, In & Out, come to mind. Of course I'm sure that commenter thinks that ONLY Christian messages should be allowed on merchandise/products.

Ok, so his response to being offended by having religion shoved in his face was to shove religion in the face of the closest person he could find.

Frankly I think Hindus, Buddhists and Jains would have more grounds for being insulted. It is being suggested that nirvana - which may take the many lifetimes of struggle and meditation - can actually be achieved by just finding some alone time. I wonder how papa mally would have reacted id the lid had read "this yogurt will be your salvation".

This!

The people in this story are completely unaware of the privileges they enjoy as Christians in a majority-Christian populace.

I can see Orthodox/ultra-Orthodox Jews getting in a tizzy about this kind of thing, too, though. Like OMG, I'm committing idolatry by eating this yogurt. I can just imagine the pashkavils banning it...

it's not even really a religious reference if it's under their "fit and trim tips" - where nirvana probably means losing weight and having good intestinal flora...

Yes! So many people think they're Buddhists because they did a yoga class and have a Buddha garden ornament. No. Buddhism is an incredibly hard religion to study and practice.

The ultra-Orthodox Jews who might find the "nirvana" reference offensive don't consider Dannon products to be kosher enough to be eating in the first place (because it isn't 7alav Yisrael). Also, many of them have never heard of the term "nirvana".

Yeah, I know--hence "this kind of thing."

Right, but as soon as they figured it out (or a rabbi/community leader told them), I am sure there would be an uproar. Just like the whole Indian-hair wigs thing.

When I see the word Nirvana, I think of the grunge band. Yes, I knew what nirvana meant before 1991, but that's not my religion and so it wasn't a word I heard very often until the band came along. I guess I am a product of my generation. In a similar vein, I don't think of spy planes when I hear someone say U2 and I do not associate R.E.M. with sleep.

Guess I should update again? Frieda (Kiki, we renamed her) is here since the end of February 2021. She came with a bunch of problems, but is the best dog ever and is doing better every day. But we do now know how a dog with ptsd looks like. For real, not joking. If she is triggered during the day, she wakes up screaming at night. Not like dogs dream, but literally screaming. Other than that she went with us on countless trips, loves hiking and even cable cars. She is one heck of a fearless dog in situations who do not remind her of her old life.
My Grandpa passed away last May and I'm still grieving a lot. After sharing a house with my grandparents for over 30 years it is just horrible to lose one of them. Even though it was his decision and he got to go like he wanted. At home, in his bed during the night without doctors. He would have need more care and he did not want more care. So after turning 90 he decided to let go and became weaker and weaker.
In other news my dad stops working for good on April 1st. Retirement time. Keep my Mum and myself in your prayers. We really do not want him at home all the time. Haha!

I don't always make good decisions for myself due to severe depression but I did today actively decide not to do something that might have been detrimental for me and am very proud of myself.

Well, this is weird. At some point, recently, I broke my wrist. I had to get a Dexa-scan today (put it off for years) and along with some bone loss, damn I had it a few minutes ago… the results said, “Fracture risk is moderate, and the patient has a significant wrist fracture. Treatment is advised.”  my left wrist aches a little but not near as much as my back, feet, knees or fingers, damn RA. I have no idea how it happened. I haven’t fallen in 2 years, haven’t banged or bumped…  the dr will call tomorrow and we’ll get  this straightened out.
