Playlist for Free Jinger - Shaking The Tree

Peas n carrots

Recommended Posts

I've really started getting into Peter Gabriel recently (always liked his US hits but never really listened to more of his catalog until recently). I was running this morning and Shaking The Tree came up on my playlist...I thought to myself what an apt song for Free Jinger, and for any SAHD to listen to...especially those in the movement who may feel limited and afraid to leave.

What other songs would you suggest to put on an FJ playlist? I'd love to hear what you guys think...

Below are the Shaking The Tree lyrics in case you haven't heard the song...as well as a youtube link.

Waiting your time, dreaming of a better life

Waiting your time, you're more than just a wife

You don't want to do what your mother has done

She has done

This is your life, this new life has begun

It's your day - a woman's day

It's your day - a woman's day

Turning the tide, you are on the incoming wave

Turning the tide, you know you are nobody's slave

Find your sisters and brothers

Who can hear all the truth in what you say

They can support you when you're on your way

It's your day - a woman's day

It's your day - a woman's day

There's nothing to gain when there's nothing to be lost

There's nothing to gain if you stay behind and count the cost

Make the decision that you can be who you can be

You can be

Tasting the fruit come to the Liberty Tree

It's your day - a woman's day

It's your day - a woman's day

Changing your ways, changing those surrounding you

Changing your ways, more than any man can do

Open your heart, show him the anger and pain, so you heal

Maybe he's looking for his womanly side, let him feel

You had to be so strong

And you do nothing wrong

Nothing wrong at all

We're gonna to break it down

We have to shake it down

Shake it all around

Definitely 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac. It's a song that really hits home for me in many ways, and on top of that, Stevie Nicks is just awesome.

Took this love and I took it down

Climbed a mountain and I turned around

And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills

'Til the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?

Can the child within my heart rise above?

And can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?

Can I handle the seasons of my life?

I don't know

Well, I've been afraid of changin'

'Cause I've built my life around you

But time makes you bolder

Children get older, I'm getting older too

Yes, I'm getting older too

So, take this love, take it down

Oh, if you climb a mountain and you turn around

If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills

Well the landslide will bring you down, down

And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills

Well, maybe the landslide will bring you down

Well, well, the landslide will bring you down

Stevie often dedicates this song to her father. I find the bolded particularly relevant to the SAHD lifestyle.

how about "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks? Any name can be substituted for earl and the song still works. Goodbye JimBob. Goodbye Josh. Fill in the blanks!

How about 'The Hardest Button to Button' by the White Stripes? The lyrics are quite ambiguous but I always picture a confused kid in a house full of siblings with no individual attention or opportunity to express their individuality:

We started living in an old house

My ma gave birth and we were checking it out

It was a baby boy

So we bought him a toy

It was a ray gun

And it was 1981

We named him "Baby"

He had a toothache

He started crying

It sounded like an earthquake

It didn't last long

Because I stopped it

I grabbed a rag doll

And stuck some little pins in it

Now we're a family

And we're alright now

We got money and a little place

To fight now

We don't know you

And we don't owe you

But if you see us around

I got something else to show you

Now it's easy when you don't know better

You think it's sleazy?

Then put it in a short letter

We keep warm

But there's just something wrong with ya

Just feel like you're the hardest button to button

I had opinions

That didn't matter

I had a brain

That felt like pancake batter

I got a backyard

With nothing in it

Except a stick, a dog

And a box with something in it

Jack White is from a large Catholic family so I'm guessing there is something autobiographical here.

Let it Ring by Amy Ray

When you march stand up straight.

When you fill the world with hate

Step in time with your kind and

Let it ring

When you speak against me

Would you bring your family

Say it loud pass it down and

Let it ring

Let it ring to Jesus 'cause he

sure'd be proud of you

You made fear an institution and

it got the best of you

Let it ring in the name of the

one that set you free

Let it ring

As I wander through this valley

In the shadow of my doubting

I will not be discounted

So let it ring

You can cite the need for wars

Call us infidels or whores

Either way we'll be your neighbor

So let it ring

Let it ring

in the name of the man that set you free

Let it ring

And the strife will make me stronger

As my maker leads me onward

I'll be marching in that number

So let it ring

I'm gonna let it ring to Jesus

Cause I know he loves me too

And I get down on my knees and

I pray the same as you

Let it ring, let it ring

'Cause one day we'll all be free

This little light of mine,

I'm gonna let it shine

Grandmother Song - Vienna Teng

Oh girl, you think you got time

You're gonna get 'round to it way down the line

But one step, two step, fall behind

So you better have a good plan

Oh girl, you think you got time

You're gonna get 'round to it way down the line

But I'm telling you no matter what you have in mind

Still gonna need a man

Take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

Yeah, take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

No, no one's gonna take care of you

In that world you've got yourself into

All the good boys, baby they're in grad school

Oh girl, your story's all wrong

Your dream'll be a nightmare before too long

You're turning thirty and still trying to sing your songs

Come on who do you think you are

Oh girl it's too heavy a load

Your mama and your baba they are worried souls

How you gonna raise a family when you're on the road

With some tattooed boy with a guitar

Take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

Yeah, take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

All this music career isn't real life

It won't see you through to when you're sixty five

And when the tide turns you won't survive

You'll sit on the banks and cry, cry, cry, cry

Gonna cry alone, cry, gonna cry

Oh girl, you've never know war

When they come in the night and knock on the door

And you can go from the high life to dirty poor

And lose everything you knew

But the one thing they can't take away from you

Is your mind and the education you've been through

And so you find a man who understands that too

Make sure that he stays true, gives respect where it's due

Make sure he knows, make sure he knows

Make sure he knows what he's got in you

Because a woman isn't just for cooking meals

Scrubbing floors, making babies

A woman's got ambitions same as he does

Maybe more

When the sirens wailed and the bombs fell

We ran from the schoolyard into hell

And what we could've been time will never tell

Because we never had your chances

The advantages that you've been handed

Girl, you'll never know how hard it was

So you got to do this for all of us

Take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

Yeah, take it from your grandmother I've been 'round

I've been 'round, I've been 'round

Well, if I could organize a big children-of-fundies fieldtrip, it would be to see the musical matilda, merely in the hopes that they might spontaneously start singing this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D2rCvx2MnE

Or possibly this:

Though I'm not entirely sure that fundy kids would recognize the elder wormwoods and miss trunchbull as the villains. :S

Ooh, I like this thread, got me listening to some stuff I haven't heard for ages! Anything by PJ Harvey but especially this:

And I can't believe I didn't think of this one by New Model Army first. I used to be a real die-hard NMA fan. There were often Godly types handing out tracts outside their gigs because of this song!

Christian Militia

There's a witch hunt coming, screaming out on it's rebirth

There's a crusade coming, Hellfires back here on earth

See the light in their eyes shine, listen to their words like swords

The Christian militia is marching now

There's a witch hunt coming, born out of all the American fears

There's a new purge coming, an inquisition for all of us here

Hold onto your sanity as best you can

While some Hitler claims to speak for the Son of Man

The Christian militia is marching now

Hatred makes the adrenaline flow

Stir up the fire watch it grow

Everybody loves a righteous cause

Old lives forgotten in holy wars

Everything forgotten in holy wars

There's a nightmare coming, shut up your doors close your mind

There's a nightmare coming - Born Again, born again blind

The girls show the way, then show us their legs

With American showbiz razzmatazz

With sex in one hand and a gun in the other, Christ returns

The right-wing respectable clampdown clan

Find their figure head in a holy man

Here come the Christians an hysterical mob

Worshipping the Devil in the name of God

Worshipping the Devil in the name of God

Can't go wrong with Loretta Lynn's "The Pill."

Or how about Loretta's "One's On the Way?"

"Be Your Own Girl" by the Wallflowers (okay, it's borderline, but I love the song):

I know you're tired of waking up on the floor

Pushed to the edge with nothing heavy to hold

Using your clothes as a blanket and a bed

Holding your hands just to lay your head.

I know you don't remember ever falling down,

Who picked you up, who gathered around

But you don't have to be his girl

And you don't have to be my girl

You can always be your own girl.

With the sound of your feet you follow yourself to sleep

Restless and ageless and looking for somethin' to keep,

When you finally fall asleep you're awake in dreams,

Hanging by the ankles in a skeleton ravine.

I know you've kicked the lights, fell on your shoes,

Punched out the colors, leaving you the blues.

But you don't have to be his girl

And you don't have to be my girl

You can always be your own girl.

There's a soft melody that's ringing in my ears

Simple and slow and it always brings you here

With broken crayons you've scribbled on the wall

Shapes of nothing and shadow box them all.

Your fingertips are broke and your knees don't bend,

Your imagination took the worst hit and cut it's skin.

But you don't have to be his girl,

You don't have to be my girl,

You can always be your own girl.

There's a soft melody that's ringing in my ears

And it's the same one you could never avoid in yours,

And if you lay down you can hear from tongue to tails

About a tattooed rhythm and drumming by color wheel.

Your rung is broken on the bottom of the rope

And you can't tie another, another knot of hope.

And you don't have to be his girl

And you don't have to be my girl

You can always be your own girl.

"Just a Girl" by No Doubt

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes

I'm exposed

And it's no big surprise

Don't you think I know

Exactly where I stand

This world is forcing me

To hold your hand

'Cause I'm just a girl, little 'ol me

Don't let me out of your sight

I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite

So don't let me have any rights

Oh...I've had it up to here!

The moment that I step outside

So many reasons

For me to run and hide

I can't do the little things I hold so dear

'Cause it's all those little things

That I fear

'Cause I'm just a girl I'd rather not be

'Cause they won't let me drive

Late at night I'm just a girl,

Guess I'm some kind of freak

'Cause they all sit and stare

With their eyes

I'm just a girl,

Take a good look at me

Just your typical prototype

Oh...I've had it up to here!

Oh...am I making myself clear?

I'm just a girl

I'm just a girl in the world...

That's all that you'll let me be!

I'm just a girl, living in captivity

Your rule of thumb

Makes me worry some

I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?

What I've succumbed to Is making me numb

I'm just a girl, my apologies

What I've become is so burdensome

I'm just a girl, lucky me

Twiddle-dum there's no comparison

Oh...I've had it up to!

Oh...I've had it up to!!

Oh...I've had it up to here!

  • 1 year later...

Reviving an old thread because this has been stuck in my head.

Its a bit of a thing in my world to have a "theme song." Some say it dates back to Ally Mcbeal but who knows. Regardless, I think that we all have a song (or two) that "speak" to us. Some define who we are, what we believe, or what we wish we could be. I'm curious, if you had a freejinger theme song, what would it be. Religious/anti religious/secular, a cover or an original.

I'm kind of hoping people will embed youtube so it will be easier to play. Who knows, maybe something that speaks to us will speak to a lurking fundie and set them free.

I'll start:

Znb3nKwKxLA

There are MANY versions, covers, performances of this song. Youtube is full of them but this version, for some reason, speaks to me more than any others. The lyrics are below - The meter is in 6/8 and C Major, which makes it (to me) almost like a hymn, until you read the words...

I've heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

But you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you

She tied you to a kitchen chair

She broke your throne, and she cut your hair

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before

I know this room, I've walked this floor

I used to live alone before I knew you.

I've seen your flag on the marble arch

Love is not a victory march

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know

What's really going on below

But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you

The holy dove was moving too

And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above

But all I’ve ever learned from love

Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you

It’s not a cry you can hear at night

It’s not somebody who has seen the light

It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain

I don't even know the name

But if I did, well, really, what's it to you?

There's a blaze of light in every word

It doesn't matter which you heard

The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much

I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch

I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you

And even though it all went wrong

I'll stand before the Lord of Song

With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah

I think this pretty much sums me up. I'm curious what others will add.

Faith Hill I Can't Do That Anymore:

Cut my hair the way you wanted

Watched you become important

Quit my job to make our new home far away

Now you're Mr.Successful and I'm queen of the treadmill

Trying to stay the size you think that I should stay

I used to dream about what I would be

But last night I dreamed about a washing machine

I keep on givin', but I can't stop livin'

A woman needs a little something of her own

I like happy endings, I don't like dependin'

I keep right on pretendin', but I can't do that anymore

Now you say I'm bein' silly

But you don't know me really

You never take the time to ask me how I feel

I keep the checkbook balanced

I decorate your palace

You know I used to think that you were king

Somewhere down deep, I know you really love me

But you can't see that what we have's not all I needed

I keep on givin', but I can't stop livin'

A woman needs a little something of her own

I like happy endings, I don't like dependin'

I keep right on pretendin', but I can't do that anymore

You try to tell me

I'm not bein' fair to you

But life's too short for a selfish attitude

Oh, I keep on givin', but I can't stop livin'

A woman needs a little something of her own

I like happy endings, I don't like dependin'

I keep right on pretendin', but I can't do that anymore

No, I can't do that anymore

I always think of this one when fundies start in with "because god..."

"With God On Our Side"

Bob Dylan

Oh my name it is nothin'

My age it means less

The country I come from

Is called the Midwest

I's taught and brought up there

The laws to abide

And the land that I live in

Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it

They tell it so well

The cavalries charged

The Indians fell

The cavalries charged

The Indians died

Oh the country was young

With God on its side.

The Spanish-American

War had its day

And the Civil War too

Was soon laid away

And the names of the heroes

I's made to memorize

With guns on their hands

And God on their side.

The First World War, boys

It came and it went

The reason for fighting

I never did get

But I learned to accept it

Accept it with pride

For you don't count the dead

When God's on your side.

When the Second World War

Came to an end

We forgave the Germans

And then we were friends

Though they murdered six million

In the ovens they fried

The Germans now too

Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians

All through my whole life

If another war comes

It's them we must fight

To hate them and fear them

To run and to hide

And accept it all bravely

With God on my side.

But now we got weapons

Of the chemical dust

If fire them we're forced to

Then fire them we must

One push of the button

And a shot the world wide

And you never ask questions

When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour

I've been thinkin' about this

That Jesus Christ

Was betrayed by a kiss

But I can't think for you

You'll have to decide

Whether Judas Iscariot

Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'

I'm weary as Hell

The confusion I'm feelin'

Ain't no tongue can tell

The words fill my head

And fall to the floor

If God's on our side

He'll stop the next war.

Buzzard, your post on 'Hallelujah' has inspired me to contribute one of my favorites, a song in a similar vein.

Bread and Blood - Air Supply

I'm not afraid of losing you or saying good-bye

If someone needs you more than me, I will understand why

I'd never stand between someone who's holding your heart

But I can't let a superstition tear us apart

Who has the right to speak fire from above

If heaven is away from you, that is the place I will give up

For falling in love can't be taking these lips from the cup

Don't fill her mind with bread and blood

Don't confuse strength with pride and mud

I have a faith in love that's thicker than all bread and blood

I'm not afraid to face the truth of what I believe

If love was never meant to choose, it could never succeed

And we may always stand alone in everyone's sight

And be the judge unto ourselves between wrong and right

Who puts a price on eternity's sin

Who throws the first stone shall search for perfection again

For you are the reason that pleasure was taken from the pain

Don't fill her mind with bread and blood

Don't confuse strength with pride and mud

I have a faith in love that's thicker than all bread and blood

I won't see you cry, should it make you cry

Don't fill her mind with bread and blood

Don't confuse strength with pride and mud

I have a faith in love that's thicker than all bread and blood

Don't fill her mind with bread and blood

Don't confuse strength with pride and mud

I have a faith in love that's thicker than all bread and blood

My dad is an atheist and a Bob Dylan nut. He once had to give a reading in his local Anglican church as leader of the town council - traditionally something from the Bible. My dad chose to read the lyrics above instead. The vicar was happy for him to do it too, so kudos to my dad and the vicar!
