When the show is over...

What will happen when TLC finally decides that it is time to cancel 19 Kids and counting?

Will they be forced to sell some land?

Go back to making clothes?

They were living in a world of Iphones, internet etc. I feel like they are living large.

Will they go back to school without computers?

Thoughts?

If it's possible Michelle will spend even less time with her children because she'll be running around the country giving speeches to any room full of people that will pay her about how she's mother of the year. They'll find a way to make money off the show even after it ends.

I doubt they'd go back to school without computers. TLC wouldn't take away thigs they've gifted them just because the show is over.

Of course, when it comes to replacing the computers as they become obsolete, I'm not sure JB would buy as many replacements as the number of computers they have now.

I don't think they'd lose the cellphones either. They may not upgrade to the latest model all the time though.

I think JB and Mullet are very shrewd businesspeople. She would definitely find a way to keep things going, probably through public speaking and writing books (though I shudder to think of the Duggar Family Cookbook!); he's got his and Mary's properties and already had a sizeable income from that. I think that they lived frugally before because of his childhood where they didn't have as much money (according to him, because of JL's poor money management). I think for people like that, money becomes an obsession, and moreover, it's about money in the bank - so they live frugally to see the total rising in the balance sheet, even if they're not living in the best conditions. I knew a couple of people like this - one who didn't have money as a child so was obsessed with the monetary value of everything, but had very poor money management skills. I also knew someone who had had no money issues in childhood, but discovered frugality, and decided it was fun to live as basically as possible, to the point that he was a real skinflint. I prefer to hover somewhere around the middle - live comfortably, but not beyond my means.

I also think JB will continue with supporting whichever far right political candidate is flavour of the month in Fundietown. They'll continue to trip out as many kids as are still available and will still feel like celebrities in their own little world.

This. Like someone who has been President, the Duggars are set for life. Although it's possible that in 10 years, someone will replace them as fundie royalty...but I still think they will have some demand in the speaking circuit. Nostalgic people, and all.

I do think they will network shop and see if they can find someone else willing to put them on TV. But aside from that, they will probably do speaking engagements. This family will not give up their spotlight.

Boob and J'chelle are multi millionaires, the money they're paid for the show is a drop in the bucket compared to the book sales, speaking engagements, etc. I don't think they will retire quietly though, they will keep the brand going as long as possible.

Really? I didn't know the book sales were that lucrative. That's interesting.

I knew they had money, but I thought it was mostly from the show and speaking engagements.

If the Duggars were to ever get another reality show on different network it would be on some channel like the Hallmark Channel or the Gospel Music Channe(GMC). Lifetime, OWN, and the Style Network probably wouldn't get involved with the Duggars and the Duggars probably wouldn't get involved with those networks either. Lifetime is pretty liberal and they have made a few movies with lesbian and gay themes and they have made movies on other topics that would horrify the Duggars. Lifetime is starting to get into the business of airing controversial shows now because of The Client List spinoff show. Years ago, there were rumors that the Duggars taped an episode of Oprah that didn't air because Oprah offered scholarships for the kids. I don't think Oprah would get involved with them again through OWN. The Duggars really don't have the personalities that the Style Network likes.

The Hallmark Channel has a conservative and family friendly vibe. They edit some of the shows they rerun for content. They used to rerun Touched by an Angel, 7th Heaven and the Promised Land. The movies that the Hallmark Channel makes are ultra family friendly and they really don't tackle gritty or possibly controversial subjects for their movies. GMC has the same family friendly vibe that the Hallmark Channel and they have aired Fireproof and other Christian movies several times. A good chunk of GMC's programming is devoted to Christian singers. I can see the Duggars getting involved with GMC and simply ignoring some of GMC's programming. It would be the same if they got involved with the Hallmark Channel.

I think the book sales have been ok but not great. I see those books being out of print in about five years or so.

They wont be destitute. JimBoob for all his faults has built himself a decent portfolio of property. I wouldn't be surprised if he has also negotiated some royalties over repeats of 19K&C (plus all the other series). Then there is royalties from their books too. They might go back to buying used. I expect that we might hear of a profusion of marriages when the gravy boat finally comes to a halt, that way he can palm off the older kids - leave and cleave and all that.

Smuggar is more at risk I suspect. He obviously plans a boat load of kids and once the publicity has gone away, his car lot will not support a zillion kids. JD's towing business wont either, but somehow I don;t see him having a huge family, when he does marry I suspect he will stick to a small-ish family (less than 8).

Isn't TLC pretty liberal too though. I mean look at some of their shows - Strange Sex is one that immediately comes to mind, not to mention the tattoo shows (LA Ink?), Long Island Medium, Toddlers & Tiaras. Heck, I'm surprised the Duggars didn't have an issue being on the same channel as Sister Wives and All American Muslim (although I suppose the Duggars were there first in those cases).

Edited for riffles.

TLC is a liberal network but they have the Duggars as "their family friendly" show. TLC has hid a lot of stuff from the public about the Duggars' beliefs. Other networks might not be willing to hide shit about the Duggars. I don't think Boob and Mullet know about some of the other TLC shows. Smuggar probably knows because he has satellite. At the TTH they watch their show through DVD's that TLC provides to them.

Another thing that could prevent the Duggars from ever getting another reality show on another network is their reputation. Their "no gays on the film crew" rule is well known. In the entertainment industry, people have connections to other shows and networks. Some of the crew members or editors could be telling people who work for other networks about the Duggars' beliefs and attitudes.

Maybe they'll write a book on raising Godly teens (aimed at parents) or living a Christian life in today's world (aimed at teens and young adults)?

The days of the newest and best will be done, and the days of 'buy used and save the difference' will return. These years will probably seem like a mere blip -- although they might keep up with a few more middle-class trends (like modern-modest thrifting and/or sewing, and replacing laptops / smart phones when they actually become unusably old -- but not just for fun).

I think it's likely that they've put away plenty, and/or invested it, and/or bought more property that turns a profit.

Books about Christian teens (whether aimed at their parents or the teens themselves) sell extremely well generally, so I could see this happening. Maybe a Botkin-style book from the older girls.

When the show is over I can think of my habit to "buy used and save the difference" proudly once again instead of having to associate it with a couple of child-enslaving morons.

I agree with on Smuggar. I don't see him and Anna have a double digit amount of kids.
