ALERT training video

Kendalyn Staddon has a promotional video from ALERT on her blog. She worked there as a cook, instead of studying medicine as she had wanted. Amazing how her father's conversaton with the Lord saved him so much money...

Not sure if any of the FJers have experiences with ALERT. Do any/some of them go on to join the Military or are they totally anti-military?

I believe they invented ALERT as an alternative because they think the real military is full of worldly influences. Could you remind us where is Kendalyn's blog? I don't remember it.

So Kendalyn wanted to become a doctor and daddy said no? Instead she served as a cook in one of Gothard's follies?

FFS, this sort of thing makes me so angry.

Edit to add: If Robert loves Kendalyn so much, maybe he ought to support her while she goes through med school.

I prefer to think they just aren't "manly" enough for the real military so they'd rather play soldier than be one.

"The unhealthy self-focus that is natural to men". Um, maybe being raised in a HYPER-PATRICARCHY is what produces these manchildren.

They really sell this like these guys are going to become first responders, when all they really do is come out a few days ofter a storm and clean up lawn debris.

The bubble just keeps getting larger and larger for these kids. It's getting close to popping. The can't keep the real world out forever.

They also have "the need to do hard things" *snicker*.

From the little I've seen ALERT reminds me of a hyper-fundie Boy Scout-type program training for the upcoming Armaggedon. And nope, them wimmin folks are not good enough for it. I remember on one ep. of 19K the boys (Josiah down to Justin) were outside doing fun stuff like reppeling down a wall and going on hikes while girls from Jana down to Joy were stuck inside (I remember how miserable Joy looked that day, it was worst than usual), in a room with other ATI girls singing boring worship music and giving speeches to younger girls on "what it is to be a proper women" (barfing as I type). Other "fun" stuff the girls did that day was needlepoint. yup, it wasn't 2011, it was 1811 for the girls...

I think that ALERT were sent to Mississippi to help with the clean-up after the tornadoes last yr. What they did, I really don't know!

Yeah, after the police/firefighters/national guard already had things under control. All ALERT is is just another private charity. It's the red cross for guys that worry their dicks are too small.

I could see Joy Anna and maybe Johanna doing this later. It is ATI after all so their would be no problem.

If that was true JD would've gotten his pilot license through ALERT by now. No hopes and dreams for everyone. Yay!

I think the other older Duggar girls are a bit prissy for outdoor activity but if Joy asked her dad in the right way to do the STEP program he would let her.

I'll have you know that needlepoint can be very relaxing, almost meditative.

I wonder why the Duggars wouldn't let John David do the Alert flight thing? Too expensive or it would have taken him away from the dog and pony TV show?

The female version of ALERT is called STEP.

I went to this page alertacademy.com/step/course/ to check out the course outline. Argh! it's like how to be a homemaker under less than ideal conditions.

The main picture is hilarious. It needs captioning -

"How many fundie girls does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: None - cause they need a man to show them how it works!"

"Light goes on; light goes off! You can't explain that!"

I'm working on captions....

http://www.alertacademy.com/step/faqs/

From the FAQs:

4. Can my 14-year-old daughter come this year?

No. The age limit is set at 15 years of age because of the maturity that is needed for the instruction given. A girl’s 14th year is usually when they are willing to put away childish behavior and begin acting more mature. STEP is also demanding physically, mentally, and spiritually and requires dedication to complete. An exception to this rule may be given if your daughter turns 15 during the program.

Poor Joy....she must be dealing with so much of this kind of crap.

5. Do I get a discount if I have more than one daughter at-tending?

There is a discount available for the second daughter applying the same year as the first daughter. Call the STEP office for details. 903.636.9211

SOTDRT

12. Will my daughter be required to wear pants (or skirts…) during the entire four-week program?

Skirts are required to encourage the girls to remain feminine in an active lifestyle. Pants are required for certain activities (such as rappelling) for safety or practicality reasons. Your daughter will be given direction as what to wear and when the appropriate times will be.

How liberal!

Oh don't get me wrong, I like knitting myself so nothing against needlepoint, it's just that being forced to do it with other girls inside while it's 80 degrees and sunshine outside, meh! I'm sure a few of the girls there would have rather done something fun and outdoorsy like rafting (which some ALERT boys got to do) instead...

Does anyone have a success story for repelling insects away from your home?
Last year we moved to a new home that is next to a forested area. It's a gorgeous community, and I knew going in that insects and just nature in general would be more a part of daily life. So when lady bugs and tiny little ants and such make their way into our home, it's not a big deal. They mostly just stay by the windows from where they came in and don't venture further in. I figure putting up with it is just part of living here.
However, the problem comes when a wasp or bee finds its way in, or big gigantic ants. And they wander farther into the home. I'm especially concerned once we get a dog (I've had dogs before, and they've all loved chasing bugs around and trying - sometimes successfully - to gobble them up!). I honestly don't know why they try to come inside. We are clean and don't leave food/crumbs around (we have a robo vaccuum that goes every morning). We don't have water sitting out (but we will once we have a dog! another concern...). Maybe it's the temperature? I feel bad because if they don't get squished, they just run out of food and water and die. Sometimes I talk to them like a human, beinng them to go back outside where there's plenty of plants and water and they can live! LOL!

My fiance got traps a few weeks back and I felt SO bad. I don't WANT them to die, and neither does fiance either, but I don't think he knew what else to do. But they didn't even work. So I'm wondering if anyone has some good tips, advice, or suggestions on non-toxic ways to repel these little creatures? Not only for my own sake, but for theirs. I wish they could understand that they will just wither away once they get inside. I've heard of putting mint or specific flowers near windows, but I wonder if that really works? And I'm sure it simply attracts other types of wildlife....

      Anyways, I'd appreciate any help!

I survived ... Ish. I'm all moved again, another 1500 miles from where the cats and I were living before. I'm in the new apartment, and kitties are adjusting well. I've only cried 6 times since Saturday! #progress.
By the way, sorry about the summer logo swap taking its sweet time. Real life was a little too much and it got forgotten.

A happy summer solstice to all northern hemisphere FJers! And a happy winter solstice to all southern hemisphere FJers! (I know it's already Monday is Australia, so I'm late for most of you.)

ETA--Oh! I just checked, and the winter solstice is at 1:31 PM on Monday, June 21 in Eastern Australia Time. So, for once the time zones worked in my favor. I'm not late!

I'm so angry at the Bishops right now. Shit like this is why I left the Catholic church. They play politics so blatantly.  I hope this convinces more people to leave.
