Through this lens, you find that the God of the Bible still endorses polygamy and sexual slavery and coerced marriage of young virgins along with monogamy. In fact, he endorses all three to the point of providing detailed regulations. Based on stories of sex and marriage that God rewards and appears to approve one might add incest to the mix. Nowhere does the Bible say, “Don’t have sex with someone who doesn’t want to have sex with you.â€

Furthermore, none of the norms that are endorsed and regulated in the Old Testament law – polygamy, sexual slavery, coerced marriage of young girls—are revised, reversed, or condemned by Jesus.

Fundies claim that they are following a biblical standard of courtship. However, if they were really following bible marriage rules, the man could kidnap a woman and force her to be his wife. Hopefully, I am not giving fundie men ideas. :?

You would think god could have said, "Hey guys, don't rape captive women. And if a woman is in the city but doesn't scream during a sexual assault, don't stone her."

Excellent article, thanks for sharing it. Brings up a lot of the things that have always bothered me about the bible (which yes, I've read several versions of) that most bible believers seem to want to ignore.

Well, fundies have often accused Muslims of believing the same things by taking passages out of the Koran which does not condemn or appears to condone the same thing. Taken out of context, most religious text can be made to support many human atrocities. When a fundie goes around condemning other religions because of passages like those found in the Bible, it's almost comedic. I find it funny that those who claim to be so devout can't see their own hypocrisy.

Righteous Christians love to talk about modern day Sodom and Gommorahs, but they usually don't discuss the aftermath of the biblical tale: when Lot's daughters thought they were the only people left alive, they got their father drunk so they could get pregnant with his babies and repopulate the world. Ick!

Actually, it could be worse than that. That is just how the story is told; more likely, according to some sources, is that Lot raped his daughters to carry on his line.

Never heard that, even ickier. We do know Lot didn't rape his daughters prior to Sodom's destruction - because when angry townsfolk gathered outside his house demanding to see his guests, Lot offered his "virgin daughters" instead. What a dad.
