What are some Christian religions that don't drink? I know Baptist...do JW? do Church of God members? Pentecostals? I think I know more religions hat do drink than don't but that's probably just my upbringing.

I believe the members of the Salvation Army don't drink, but only because they minister also to alcoholics and ex-alcoholics, and not because they believe it to be inherently sinful.

I don't know any mormons that drink.

Baptists don't drink? My friend is baptist acts like the best christian ever and she drinks alcohol. Guess she missed that little bible lesson.

JW's DO drink. I have several acquaintances who are JW, and I've seen them in the store buying wine, so I flat out asked. Of course, now they keep showing up at my door, but hey, they answered my question.

My sister is IFB and drinking is evil. No drinking at all. Once my dad and dh were into brewing beer and they were exchanging new flavors and trying the new ones. My BIL took 1 sip and his sons saw and gasp and went running for my sister saying "dad drank beer, dad drank beer!". Sister grabbed husband and "took him in the back room to talk" for a good 15 minutes. I have never seen him take a drink of anything alcoholic since.

hey, I made a nice, thoughtful reply to this thread and it didn't post! harumph. Now I don't want to be so precise in re-submitting a post.

Bottom line is that though there may be "official" stances on the use of alcohol in some denominations, most consider it to be up to the individual. Only the extreme fundies do not differentiate between drunkenness and having a glass of wine or a cocktail.

In my former Baptist church the alcohol debate was divided. The preacher and a few older members said alcohol was sinful while the younger crowd did not.

The Baptist churches in our area tend to be against drinking of any kind. I've heard a lot of sermons on how, whenever the Bible mentions "wine" as a good thing, it really means grape juice, and whenever it mentions it as a bad thing, it's actually wine. Or else, that wine back then wasn't as alcoholic as it is now, so it's a totally different thing from drinking alcohol today, which is bad either because drinking = drunkenness, or because it gives "the appearance of evil," and people won't realize you're a Good Christian/you'll give Christianity a bad name.

In my experience, however, that in no way means the actual Baptist PEOPLE in our area don't drink.

We were members of Assembly of God churches and then a Southern Baptist church. All of the churches taught that drinking was a sin, and Jesus drank grape juice. In youth group meetings it was pounded into our heads, at least monthly.

I like being Jewish a lot more! I get to drink whenever I want now!

I know a few Baptists that do drink. There was an Assembly of God church in the town I grew up in, that church was against drinking. My uncle was married to a woman whose family left the LDS church back in the 80's. Her parents were occasional drinkers and part of the reason they left was because in support of the mom's brother who was gay. None of the active Mormons I know are drinkers.

When becoming a member of a church I have heard it's pretty typical to agree to not take part in alcohol, Homosexuality, porn etc.

Becoming a member of WHICH church, Thrid? That's the point of the thread, because not all churches frown upon alcohol.

The United Methodist Church officially discourages alcohol use (as well as tobacco), but nobody pays attention and nobody cares, at least that's been my experience.

There are some churches/denominations that make members sign covenant or oath forms in which they state they won't do certain things. Some denominations do discourage certain things but some members will still take part in those activities.

Eh? Who did you hear this from, and what denominations were they?

It appears a lot of Baptists don't drink, just an observation. I never understood that grape juice thing. I thought the translation was pretty obvious that it was wine people drank. It also makes more sense to drink wine than grape juice. Prior to refrigeration, wine was a much safer bet. Even in the 18th century, British soldier would put a bit of alcohol in their water on board ships to prevent spoil (and also to pass the time probably....).

Our pastor in Iowa told us that a certain local restaurant was so bad that he walked out. The reason was that they had a lot of beer signs and he was offended.

My future brother-in-law (who considers himself one of those "cool, hip" Christians) is a seminary student and had to ask one his professors/counselors/elders (not sure) before he could have a glass of wine at dinner. They go to a non-denominational church, but BIL is basically a fundie-lite (and the worst kind).

They would be sick of me very quickly! I have a glass of wine with dinner almost every night (unles I'm really tired, then it's coffee to keep me up for a couple of more hours!). Sweet Muscadine is great with pizza! :shifty:

Same here, I know Baptists who drink, but it's true that if someone really believes in the LDS church, they won't drink at all. Now, I have known people who quit the Mormon church who do drink, even if they're still on the membership records out of respect for believing family.

Talk about whipped! Aren't the men supposed to be in charge too? I'm surprised she got away with wearing the pants if one single sip was the end of the world.

Oh, you do! I love wine and pizza. If you have Duplin wine in your stores (not sure where you are or how far they sell), their Hatteras Red is amazing!

I thought it was basically baptist, pentecostal (of the grape juice variety), and mormons who were heavy on abstaining - while most other churches just kind of say "not to excess". Interesting that the official LDS church is still anti caffeine as well, when some offshoots (like whatever sect the Sister Wives mess belongs to) are more lenient towards alcohol and caffeine. I imagine a lot of independent or non denominational might preach abstaining.

The Seventh-Day Adventist is very firm on the stance against alcohol. To insiders, Adventists who drink are known as "Badventists."

My grandfather was a methodist minister and he and my grandmother never touched a drop of alcohol. My grandmother was of the opinion that once alcohol touches your lips you will for sure be an alcoholic soon thereafter.
