No joke. We got a flat in the parking lot of a football stadium as it was clearing out after the game. It was 4:00 on Father's Day and we had another party to attend. Even WITH AAA, in a big city, it took them 2 hours to get a truck out to us in the (by them totally abandoned) lot. But hey, it was FREE!

We had extended RV AAA towing on my old school bus. At that time it was a flat rate per 200 miles. Sunset broke down 180 miles away from home and it cost us only $25 to put her on a bed and get her home.

I always thought that maybe John David was gay and that is why he keeps a quieter profile. He doesn't want anyone to know his secret.

I tend to think he has Aspergers and is just socially shy.

I thought that maybe he's just shy and/or not interested in the little-kid-centric activities that the show likes to film. What is with all this internet diagnosing?

Especially from a "nurse" who should know better? You see the kid for twelve seconds on a tv show maybe a few times a season, and now he's either gay or autistic?

I have to say that I am not a Duggar apologist, just someone who doesn't believe in making snap judgments when there is insufficient information.

I thought that's what the internet was for, diagnosing people on TV whom we've never met in real life. Well that and porn.

I wish I had thought of that on Mardi Gras. I got totally shit-faced on Dickson Street in Fayetteville--first time in 25 years--because my friend was buying and the guys in the bar were enchanted by her English accent and started plying us with jello shots. Left the truck on the square, called my son's gf at 1:30 to pick us up, and she obliged to drive us the 30 miles home. And didn't complain when I hurled all over myself. Laughing my ass off one minute; puking the next.

Wouldn't that have been a life-changing experience for little ol' JD?? lol.

He just reminds me of an ordinary, decent nice redneck guy who lives in his Carhart jacket and baseball cap, always has chains in the back of his pickup truck and never fails to stop and help a lady stuck in a ditch. Kind of guy who won't even take a case of beer in payment. Let's face it the squeakiest wheel is the one that gets heard in that house. He and Joseph are just typical of the strong quiet type guy who goes to work, brings home his check, plays with the kids and spends the evening glued to the tv with his wife beside him. Nothing evil.

Or the kind that hangs out with the "good ol' boys", talking about how good it was back when the women and darkies knew their place.

I've always meant to make a thread about this but I guess I'll ask here- why do we like John David? I've seen many people here say they prefer him because "X" (nicer, doesn't seem as fundie, seems likely to break away from the fundie pack)

The thing is- why do we think those things about him? The only thing I can think of is that he's quiet and that, in the absense of a in-your-face-fundie attitude like Josh had, people think he's less extreme. However, I've never seen any actual proof to back up that he's any better or less fundie than his father or brother. Especially once that crazy-ass picture of him with the gun came out.

Is there some proof I missed or are people just assuming he's these things without anything to back it up?

I met JD face to face for all of 10 minutes and the reason I like him is that his shyness reminds me of one of my sons. He was very respectful and polite to me but I hear a lot of mass murderers were too. :? I didn't get a vibe that he thought I was some how less than him because I was a heathen because I wore jeans or had short dyed red hair at the time. I came away that he was respecting me as a person who was older than him but at the same time kept me at arm's length so to speak. I didn't ask him anything too personal other than normal small talk like how he liked our state and telling him, Jessa and Jinger about really cool things to do in our state and the best time to do them in. He seemed very interested to hear about body surfing at the sand dunes and where interesting trails lead to hidden ghost towns and gold mineing streams. In other words, for 10 minutes he came across as a normal shy 20 year.

That sounds good, and I've had neighbors like that in my old town of 2000. But the reality is their parents teach them that I should burn in hell for using the ebil birth control, having an abortion, and having sex for fun without the benefit of marriage.

And that too. :( In a normal, sane Christian family, he would just be like Hopewell described sans judgement. I keep forgetting that he is now a voter who may or may not but more likely to vote away every right of my freedom.

I don't understand it either. JD rubbed me the wrong way when he and Jana chaperoned J&A's Fireproof date. They went out to eat and he made some sort of seemingly snarky comment about how others don't bow their heads and pray in restaurants like they do. I could be misremembering, but it struck me as judgmental and it was all the confirmation I needed to see that JD has gulped as much Kool Aid as the rest of them. He's certainly more palatable than Josh, but Josh is hardly the yard stick I would use for measuring a person's decency. It's not too hard for anyone to come out ahead.

It's here, around 2:45. It doesn't seem snarky to me. I don't though. I think the reason why a lot of people like JD is because there is a natural inclination to root for someone. Since JD is the least objectionable, because he hardly ever speaks, he becomes more appealing.

LOL! JD just got criticized for making a snarky comment . . . by someone posting on a forum titled "Quiver Full of Snark"!

With all the mountains of snarky comments made about his family here, I'd say he's entitled to do some snarking back :-) But for what it's worth, my recollection of that comment is more that he was just making an observation, from the viewpoint of someone who's lived a relatively sheltered life in a largely evangelical Christian community. He came across to me as more of a self-conscious hick than a snarker. He seems like a nice kid though, and definitely not headed towards a career of shameless self-promotion like his papa.

What JD said was "I think praying in public has kind of gotten lost in our culture". It sounded more like an observation than snark to me.

I suggest we have a Great Free Jinger Meetup in Springdale complete with alcohol. When we get plastered we can call JD to haul up all back to our motels and we can defraud him on our way back. And maybe tip him a little for the trouble.

I don't think JD's comment was snarky or judgemental. Though I'm not sure he was totally correct (of course with the guys at the other table staring...)

It's not unusual to see people praying at restaurants, at least for me. Maybe I'm just really observant, or others don't see the prayers because of timing. It's not like everyone shows up and gets served at the same time...

I like JD too, but I agree that there's no way we could possibly know what he's like if we don't meet him face-to-face. I think part of the reason everyone likes him so much is because of he's not an attention whore, he's quiet and stays out of the way, and he seems like a breath of fresh air when you realize he's actually related to Josh. We have no clue though what he really thinks of fundamentalism.

I've started to wonder, though, if JD is being babied by JimBoob like Josh is. I doubt it, since Josh seems to be the favorite to me.

Of course Josh is the favorite. He's the only child they actually wanted and didn't feel forced to birth out of guilt for "causing" the miscarriage of Michelle's second pregnancy.

To be fair, the fact that there is a camera crew in the middle of the restaurant does make them a bit of a spectacle, but the whole praying in public thing always rubs me the wrong way, not because they are praying, but because instead of being discreet, they turn it into a "look at us, we're PRAYING!" situation. Just another example of how they have to constantly show that they are different, and better than, "other families".
