Why are none of the Duggar daughters married?

I thiink it's a combination of things -- Jim Bob's weird interest in purity, the free child care and housework, plus ratings and speaking engagements.

The daughers are all very attractive. Having them marry w ould boost ratings in the short term, but losing the daughters' presence could ultimately hurt future ratings and make the family less desireable at speaking engagements.

Or JB could have a new market with speaking engagements if he would marry off some of the girls. On another note, I think they shouldn't marry they should stay and help, the howlers are more independent, and the have help at home. It's better than what Anna must be going through.

I think that the Duggar girls see what its like to be a Gothardite wife with no money. They must see the other girls/women their age at the conferences who are living in poverty and having tons of kids and looking miserable and worn out. They have to realize that while they don't have a great situation at home that, at least, they don't have some guy they barely know and who can barely support a family demanding his husbandly rights every night and then doing absolutely nothing to help his wife.

I have an amazing husband to be that does more around the house than I do. I know that if I'm worn out from being home with a baby all day that he will help with the chores and change a diaper. He might even kick me out of the house for a few hours and force me to go out with the girls and have fun.

The Duggar girls aren't stupid. They might be undereducated, but they know that they are going to be slaves of one sort. At least their current slavery includes working appliances, air conditioning and sleeping alone.

Knight in Shining Amore said that he'd met the Duggar girls and that they laughed at the idea that they needed to be "freed" from anything. I think you're onto something, SiSiL78.

Ha, thanks.

Actually I feel like I have "experience" in the SAHD syndrome, but that the Duggar girls are lucky. A totally secular woman I know who is a mere 6 months younger than me (i'm in my early 30s) and her older sister are SAHD. She's an accountant and her sister has a masters in LIS but no job. Both have been, almost purposely, socially stunted by their parents and remain at home their parents constant companions. Whatever money they make is "invested" by daddy and they are on strict allowances. The woman in question only started driving herself around at 30 in daddy's car and her clothes are probably 15-20 years out of date. Despite probably making enough to easily live on her own she continues with this lifestyle. When she is asked why she doesn't just up and leave its like we are asking her why doesn't she move to the moon and marry a martian. Its that preposterous to her.

She doesn't feel the need to be freed from anything. Then again she and her sister are also clearly miserable, but they don't see that the answer to their misery is leaving the house. So they'll spend yet another weekend or evening at home with Mom and Dad watching reruns on television and being children. I guess at least they don't seem to be house slaves, although they do seem to be propping the family up financially.

There are simply no services or laws that apply to adult children in miserable situations (I actually checked) even if they are mentally ill and not getting help (I'm pretty sure that the older sister has developed some massive mental condition, but they are told they are sane and only crazy people go to therapy).

It seems like the same syndrome that affects women in abusive romantic relationships, especially those that are emotionally abusive because somehow emotional abuse is okay for so many women...

I don't think getting married would be necessarily better for the girls. They'd be basically forced into marrying someone they barely know and then pump out baby after baby as well as doing all the housework, and as the husband would be their headship, they would have to do whatever he said. Obviously it's not great that they're forced to stay home under JB's thumb but at least they have their siblings and aren't becoming mothers whilst they're still essentially children. It's basically trading a cage for another cage.

What I hope would happen is that they break free and make an independent life for themselves but sadly I think that it is unlikely. I do hope that the public realise that there's something strange going on that the majority of the adult Duggar children are still at home and sharing two rooms, and that none of them have pursued higher education or tried for a job.

HaHaHa!!! It will probably like the Maxwells, cake, mints, punch and maybe a few nuts! No way is CheapBoob going to spring for a dinner!

I was thinking about this too. Even when the boys get married, he will stay have to pay for the rehearsal, preacher, tuxes ect. IF they go the strict traditional route.

If he spends $5k on each wedding/rehearsal its almost $100k. I'm sure they will renew their vows in there a few times as well so lets just say over $100k. :romance-kisslips:

I wonder if any of the kids are allowed to be alone in the bathroom for more than a few minutes. I know that Razing Ruth's dad made a rule that someone else of the same gender had to be in the bathroom during showers/baths. The Duggars seem a little less strict, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a rule like that.

I seem to recall from one of the earlier specials that thy have a bathroom time limit. I remember thinking I could barely manage to get my hair wet in the time they're given

Something tells me in the Duggar's "old" pre-tv life this would have been very likely. Happily enforcing it was no problem due to the line for the bathroom. Today--I don't know if they can take a nice relaxing bath or not, but I'm sure hot water is still a problem in that house.

If any upcoming episodes include a Duggar bragging about how, even with so many children at home, they never run out of hot water, that'll be proof positive someone's been reading Free Jinger.

I think I wrote a blog post about this once (why the Duggar girls aren't married?), so I'm sorry if I'm being repetitive. In my opinion, the Duggar girls aren't married because in the social circles they're part of, they're not as hot a commodity as you might imagine. Part of the ATI/IBLP mentality for courtship is that a young man should be able to keep the young lady in the manner to which she's accustomed. Well, most SOTDRT graduates in ATI aren't earning that sort of money at age 20-22. Also, it's customary for ATI girls to move to where the man's family is. Jim Bob can't sell the 19kids and counting brand if Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger live several hundred miles away. Third, all of the girls have been on television and that carries a lot of pressure to perform for a potential mate. Can you imagine being the guy who fails a Duggar girl on national television? I also imagine that Jim Bob and Michelle are being pretty picky! Any money the young lady brings into an ATI marriage becomes her husbands upon the transfer of authority. Pre-nups are unheard of in ATI. I'm sure Jim Bob thinks about that and doesn't want anyone else getting a piece of his pie. Finally, most ATI families have skeletons in the closet of some sort. I guarantee you every ATI family with a boy of courting age is thinking about how quick the internet sleuths would find their skeletons and publicize them, possibly jeopardizing their status in ATI, should one of their son's marry into the Duggar family.

What sort of skeletons? Is this something that is a big deal in their world but not in ours like being gay, looking at porn or a woman wearing pants or is this a truly big deal like a blanket session gone wrong and daddy had to dig a big hole?

I'm thinking something along the lines hook-ups at the conferences. I'm sorry, but there is no way you can convince me that with all of those horny teens and young adults in one place that there isn't some "sweet fellowshipping" (straight or gay) going on. Of course when the parents get wind of it, I can see how they would go to great lengths to cover that up...especially the those that are considered fundie royalty.

 I'll never be able to hear Michelle say sweet fellowship again without laughing.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was something going on. How easy would it be to slip into the woods and just make out?

I passed a church with a sign that said "cake and fellowship after services". I busted up laughing and had to explain the whole joke to my husband. Now we both laugh when we see it.

At what point do you think a Duggar girl/woman might marry?

I hope the ladies are getting some sweet fellowship on a nature hike.

Yeah, It beats the hell out of being a ignorant virgin on their wedding night & expecting it to be this huge romantic thing like something from a soap opera love scene.

Ha ha! Whenever I hear the used gum or handled rose comparison I always want to retort with an anecdote about an athlete going on the field without practice. How much fun does a person have the first time they try a sport versus when they have mastered the rules and have some idea of what they are doing?

Whether is would be 'marrying down' or not, Lawson Bates is certainly good looking! How would Jim Bob tell him no if he were interested in Jessa or Jinger? As for the cameras, Anna adjusted to them awfully quickly and awfully well!

I don't think that Jim-Bob could say no to a Bates ciourting one of the girls. He has to keep the "friendship" up, heaven forbid that anyone realize that they are more "frienemies" than friends!

This is a great point. I hadn't thought of that. Now that you mention it, it really seems like this could be a big part of why the Duggar girls aren't marrying.

Stupid, STUPID JimBob for putting his family on the show...

It does seem like it would be a huge amount of pressure on both bride and groom to be so completely new to ANY physical contact prior to having sexual intercourse on their wedding night.

I would imagine even most couples who want to be virgins on their wedding night are at least used to kissing, making-out, foreplay in general. All of that physical contact would at least help them to know what to do when they lose their virginity.

I actually enjoyed sex a great deal the first time, but I recall being surprised that the orgasm wasn't any more spectacular than when I was just "fooling around" with a boy. If there had been no contact at all ...wow, that could be a real let down.

MrsS2004, I see what you're saying and thats not uncommon....However, in a movement like this I wonder if it even matters if a woman has the big O or not...I don't think the woman is really allowed to enjoy sex or even experiment with different positions...hell I wouldn't be surprised if Michelle has never had the Big O....even with 19 kids

Michelle wasn't raised fundie, so she no doubt started her life with Jim Bob with certain, um, advantages, that her daugthers may be competely ignorant of.
