Ok I'm certain that this article http://www.quiverfull.com/articles.php/id20/ has been shared/ discussed before, if it hasn't then read it. It's a doozy. But I wanted to open up a thread on it again, because it is just that eye opening to the "real" Duggars.

What I'm really curious about is if the same standards still apply now that they have more money and are in the media?

Do you think any thing has changed?

I'm wondering if spanking is still involved? The way the younger children act and bounce off of furniture/ walls, I doubt that it rarely happens.

Also this

Quote
But Jim Bob doesn't for one second forget that a reporter is in the room, and he guards what both he and his wife say. When talk turns to his primary race against Hutchinson, Michelle starts telling of the day Jim Bob decided to challenge him.

Jim Bob quickly lets her know there's one part of the story they won't be telling. Michelle questions his decision, not seeing a problem with sharing it. But then, following a few brief whispers, she smiles and simply goes on with the part she can tell.

I highly doubt that happens anymore. It seems like Michelle interrupts Boob every chance she gets to blather on about whatever she wants.

Edit- because I don't seem to know how to put in a link

My how times have changed:

Michelle goes to the grocery store every other day to pick up three gallons of milk and fresh fruits and vegetables instead of making one big weekly trip with four or five grocery carts.

"I don't like to do it that way," she says. "It just almost overwhelms the poor cashier when we come through."

...As opposed to their TLC show, where they attempt to do everything as "big" as possible and don't care about inconveniencing others.

Posted

Well, they used to stay home all the time too. That's probably the main reason. Plus it's easier to run in and grab then load up the bus and take everyone. I wonder if they order from Sam's Club or Costco and just pick up the rest.

Posted

I wonder why they make no mention of the first miscarriage, that was why they decided to leave it up to God not because they did not think BC was right for them.

Does anyone know what that is?

If they don't do it big then the producers won't be able to awe us in the pop up bubbles. Doing it big makes them special.

So when did the family become averse to eating fresh fruit and vegetables?

Probably when they couldn't afford to feed it to them.

Yeah I'm curious about it too...

Was that the same lost election that JB blamed Josh for ? Aka, the "sin in the camp", shaved hair awkward era?

I wouldn't be surprised if JB decides to make another run, this time for Congress? If that happens I hope voters in that disctrict will be intelligent enough and vote for his opponent.

O/T but anyone notice something odd about this?

The "we" includes Joshua, "Joshy," 13; twins Jana, "Banana," and John-David, 11; Jill "Muffin," 10; Jessa, "Blessa," 8; Jinger, "Jin-Jin," 7; Joseph, "Joe-Joe," 6; Josiah, "Siah," 5; Joy-Anna, "Jogees," 3; "The Dynamic Duo" twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah, 2; Jason, "Jay Bird," 1, who with "The Dynamic Duo" forms "The Three Musketeers"; and James, 8 weeks.

I get why new baby James doesn't have a nickname but JD? Poor kid was also a lost boy. :(

Jim Bob did not blame Josh for the loss of his election; the term "sin in the camp" does not come from Jim Bob.

The full story (as best as we know it, no clue if it's true) is written out in full on this forum, by me. I can't be bothered to search it out right now but try using the forum search for things like "oprah" and "jim holt."

Mods, I'm going to estimate that this is about the seventh time I'm bitching and asking for this damn post to be made a sticky. I'm pretty sure someone asks about this once a month.

EDIT: For the ease of everyone (like the mods! Heya!) I found the post in question: viewtopic.php?p=13658#p13658

He has had various jobs through the years. Michelle jokes that she read a list of the Top 10 worst jobs, and her husband has had seven of them, including insurance salesman and used car salesman.

Lovely, you've set your son up with one of the "worst jobs" in your own words. Arent you just the bestest parents EVAH!?!?

The Duggars had a turning point in their lives 11 years ago when Jim Bob attended a meeting that discussed financial freedom through living a debt-free life. Michelle eventually attended the meeting, too, and now she and Jim Bob conduct the seminars out of their home.

So here we see that boob was about 25 when he discovered that debt was ebil. He then purposed to get out of debt but its still the debt that allowed him to build up enough rental income so that he could eventually get out of it. If they hadnt taken out mortgages they could never have built the "empire" they now have. And smugs wouldnt be a used car salesman.

I just felt like I should run," Jim Bob says. "It's not because I am so smart."

"We are working on a family orchestra," Michelle says. " 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' is about as far as we get."

I suppose some things never change. From the last time I heard them play it was still very much a work in progress. :violin:

I don't think it would be wise to sticky it because some of the claims are potentially libelous.

There are so many statements in that article that irritate me, but the most obvious were that Jim Bob didn't have to work a full time job even then, due to his wonderful "debt-free" real estate investments (what other family, with 13 kids, wouldn't need at least one full time worker?..something about that seems fishy)...also, Michelle and Jim Bob didn't need to "bother turning around as the buddies would tell them if something was needed...." Josh was 13, and JD and Jana 11 at the time, Jill 9, all buddies?? And of course, Jim Bob stating he had $250,000 to invest in this campaign he didn't have a snowball's chance of winning, but his kids still had to live stuffed into a 3 bedroom house, wearing used shoes and clothes either handmade or from Goodwill, none of them had any activities except home church and broomball. You'd think that $250,000, especially 11 years ago, could have gone a long way toward getting a larger home and better clothes for the kids - but no, just like today, it's all about Jim Bob and Michelle. He had to waste his money on that race because God , or his ego, told him to run.

No no, it's a common misconception. And of course the whole thing could be false - I'm just a stickler for, uh, repeating gossip accurately. :P

My opinion is that it didn't come up b/c the BC story is a BS and they made it up to "convict" people that birth control is wrong.

Disclaimer: I'm not a mod, don't want to be a mod, and I greatly appreciate all the work by Alecto and the mods. That work keeps FJ a viable board.

That said-

I think this is ridiculous. There are as many different opinions on what should or should not be stickied as there are posters.

And there are five zillion things that newbies (or the forgetful) "ask about once a month". Can't and shouldn't sticky everything. (My unasked for personal opinion: I wish this story would die. Who knows what the actual truth was about "sin in the camp". Meanwhile, somebody may be getting a really bad rap for something that might not have even happened, might have been relatively minor or insignificant, or it might have been very serious. We. Don't. Know.)

It's kind of like this: (I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist). We do testing on blood, urine, etc., in hospitals or other healthcare environments. We work 24/7. We have to have a workflow to get all the work done. If a doctor desperately needs a particular result, he/she can order the test STAT, i.e. do it right now, pushing it ahead of the normal workflow.

Well, in reality, (this is the truth), about 80% of all tests in many labs are ordered STAT. Who knows which STAT is more STAT than all the other STATs? Suffice to say, STAT has lost meaning and effectiveness.

Same thing could happen with stickies.

I have zero doubt that some of those children are not musically talented and probably hate playing so won't get better. I think it's completely ridiculous to make all their children learn the same two instruments. Maybe they want to try something else or not play any. I have almost no musical talent, but my brother is amazingly gifted at music (the kid is good at almost everything-what? No, I'm not jealous. You don't know what you are talking about. ;) )

Yes!!! Such a fine example of parenting. Here we have Michelle, perteputating the myth that a good wife can submit to her husband and support his every dream, care for as many children as God gives her all-by-her-little-self, homeschool, cook and clean, all on a shoestring budget while her headship blows a quarter of a million bucks on his calling. Oh! And she does it with a smile on her face and a meek and gentle spirit the whole time. The whole time, dammit!

One of my sisters is marvelous on the piano. And she can sew ~ I mean really, really well. Another sister can play pretty much any instrument she picks up. Me? I took piano lessons for five years and I can kinda play with two hands. Or at least I could, 20+ years ago. Luckily, I didn't grow up in a family where playing an instrument or making my own clothes was a requirement. ; )

I hate these winds. They are absolutely HOWLING here in SoCal. Not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'm so afraid we'll get sudden evacuation orders the way we did with the Woolsey fire in 2018. There's no way of knowing when and where a fire might crop up and once it does, there's no containing it in these winds. I'm praying for the safety of our brave firefighters. My heart is with everyone in the Pacific Palisades and in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena.

The world doesn't need more people. If people want to have children, that's fine, but there is no reason we have to keep having more people.

      Winter snack: crispy chickpeas
Preheat oven to 400 F. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, then toss in olive oil and whatever spices you like. I use fried chili crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, stir, another 15 minutes, stir, repeat until they're crispy and delicious. Good as a snack, on salads, etc.
I am sharing my super secret chili crisp source just because I love you guys:

Happy New Year, all you amazing people! I just saw a (possibly joking) tradition online called Yule Boasting.

      My quick text version:
i will begin 2025 by distilling a barrel full of tequila from the agave plants in my yard, assisted by george clooney, who admires me greatly and will be sad and heartbroken when my plan moves ahead without further human assistance.
sky-clad, i will find my familiar, a malevolently clever curve-billed thrasher named Willie Wildman. together we will roam my neighborhood, putting together an animal army consisting of a coyote pack, a squadron of javelinas, and my local great horned owl pair, perseverance and ingenuity.
we will all consume mass quantities of tequila, paint our faces blue, and set out on yucca broomsticks to reach our nation's capitol.
we will swoop down on DC, screaming and howling, occupying first the capitol and then the white house, where we will become co-presidents and replace congress with the yacht-sinking orcas of the mediterranean. AND EVERYONE WILL FUCKING REJOICE.
