Have anyone seen the previews for next week's episode?

We see and hear Michelle talking to someone on the phone in that crazy baby voice, "Hello! This is Michelle Duggaaar!!" as she dreamily looks out the window from her sink.

The next shot goes to a little girl sitting on a pile of pillows, and then another shot of her laying in a hospital bed. Michele said that she met the girl because she was in the hospital at the same time as Josie. Then the announcer says something to the effect of "but wait! There's more!! A surprise!!"

Even before the commercial goes there, I get the snarking sinking feeling that the little girl had made a "Make A Wish" wish to talk to or meet Michele and/or the Duggars. Oh, glory be, The Lord does provide, because the next clip was the little girl being wheeled into a store where a service project for "Alex's Lemonade Stand" was going on!!

Even though I qualified as a child, I never got a wish. There is a similar organization for adults, but they only give if you are expected to have less than six months to live. I have to say, that when my disease gets to the point where I only have six months to live due to my Cystic Fibrosis, I'll would be pretty dang sick to do much of anything that I'd want to with hubby, like visit family in Italy, vacation in Australia, take a cross-country road trip, etc.

My choices would be:

- live in an ocean-side beach house until the end (Yes, like in Beaches. The salt air is known to be very therapeutic for CF patients). I find the water insanely heavenly to be swimming in, with the waves pushing you around, the sun smiling down on me.

- Have Billy Joel sing me "Piano Man," "Only the Good Die Young," "Lullabuy," and "So It Goes".

- Meet Ewan McGregor and ask him to sing to me the entire Moulin Rouge soundtrack, while wearing a kilt (j/k about the kilt, lol), and arriving on his motorbike.

Still... just imagine what you could say in person to them. It'd open up whole new ranges of commentary! (And on tape, too!)

Snarky, I didn't know that you have CF - I've been researching it for nearly 12 years now, my work has been working on finding new ways to kill P. aeruginosa. I'm sorry to ehar you have to deal with this horrible disease :-(

Posted

Snarky I'm also sorry to hear that you have CF.

Posted

Wow, you had CF? So sorry!

And the fact that an innocent kid would want to meet the Duggars... oh little girl, I weep for ye.

Has, she has CF. It's not something you outgrow or gets cured, is it? But the life expectancy and quality of life is better than it used to be, I think. (To be honest, I never know what to say when people say things like that, as it all seems so... said before.)

As someone who is raising a child who qualifies for a wish but has never wished I have to say that if this truly is the girl's wish then nothing else matters. Trust me, like most of you, Michelle drives me more than a little batty. However, if she can bring some comfort and hope to a very ill child who wants to meet her then I am glad she is participating.

If it truly is the girls wish, did they have to make a self promoting tv episode out of it?

I feel you on this one, but maybe the girl's wish was to be on an episode of the show somehow. You never know...

My son did have a Make A Wish, we did the old standby Disneyworld. It was wonderful. If he had told me that his wish was to meet the duggers I would have let him have that, but I would NOT have let them film it for their stinkin tv show. There are many wonderful celebrities that work with Make A Wish and you never hear about it because they do it for the kids, not for good press or accolades. The Duggars are fame whores, and shame on them for using a Wish for their shameless self promotion "Look at us! We're great! We helped a sick little kid!". Makes me sick.

This. I agree if I had been in that situation I wouldn't have allowed filming. A lot of celebs who are part of wishes for MAW rarely publicize their involvements in wishes or the organization unless it is a fundraising event. The Duggars are definetely fame whores and they have a bigger ego than bigger celebs.

One of my close friends just did a Disney trip with a similar organization. They went all out, and she told me how everyone went out of their way to make it the best possible experience for their family. And I don't imagine they were filming it and publically patting themselves on the back either.

I'm no bible scholar, but I don't think there is anything in it extolling the virtue of making a big ass deal for profit any time you do something nice. Quite the opposite actually.

We are talking about Michelle and Jim Bob. I'm sure they'll find a Bible verse or two to justify what should be a charitable act for TV.

My son will probably get to make a wish someday, but sure as hell better not wish to meet Duggars.

No, no, no. You should TOTALLY include the kilt. Let the man show his Scottish pride.

Didn't the Duggars read the part of the Bible where it says to do good deeds to do good for others, not to show off how good Christians they are? Tl;dr version is Jesus doesn't like famewhores representing Christianity.

And ask him to lift the kilt. After all, we all know what they (don't) wear under those kilts!

Around 1980, the life expectancy was around 12 years. Now, it's mid to late 30's. We're getting there, just not quickly enough.

Yep, another in agreement.

I would have qualified had I been a year or two older. I would have/would still wish to meet Elmo/Kevin Clash (if he brought Elmo).

I do have CF, and to tell you the truth, it does suck a lot of the time. I am sick very frequently, which greatly limits my quality of life. Thank you for the kind words and especially to Bubbabear for working on new meds to fight this pneumonia. There's a big chance I am going on IV antibiotics soon, for 2 weeks.

The past three years have been especially tough, as most of my infections are multi-resistant to most antibiotics.

I try to be on the positive side of things, but when you're feeling crappy coughing non-stop, it's tough to be brave and smiling. But to end on a high note, I'll use a smiley :).

I don't begrudge the child if that is her wish, but it doesn't belong on their tv show. So much for the scripture passage about fasting and not looking like you're suffering, or letting one hand know what the other is doing.

I watched last night's show, which is unusual (re: Genessa meeting the Duggars). Normally I avoid 19KAC.

I think it must be noted that yesterday I was supportive of the Duggar's willingness to "exploit" a child if the child's wish was the meet the Duggars. After watching the show I want to review my comment.

First off, it appears that this was not a formal "Wish" and I have doubts about how much of the show reflected the girl's wishes. At least, as someone who has been involved in "Wish" it didn't look that way to me. You see, "Wishes" are all about the child, not the "celebrity". In yesterday's situation we witnessed a little girl, with end-stage cancer, recently discharged from hospital, receiving a "special invite" to lemonade and pretzels since she wanted the meet the Duggars. In a Wish scenario everything would have been organized around the needs and wishes of the child, not the convenience of the celebrity (i.e. the child would have had a hotel room to allow her to drive, have a nap and then meet the Duggars).

What really annoyed me was the Duggar's prayer that they wanted to be a "blessing" to this little girl. You know what. If you want to be a blessing DO SOMETHING. Don't just SAY IT. GET OFF YOUR FANNIES AND GO TO HER AND DO SOMETHING THAT SHE WOULD ENJOY. Make a difference her life (not yours). Respect her health the limitations. DO NOT MAKE A TERMINALLY ILL CHILD DRIVE TWO HOURS IN COLD WEATHER SO YOU CAN FEEL ALTRUISTIC.

Prayers and selling a few cups of lemonade are the easy way out. The more Christian response would have been to pull up your socks and go do something for the little girl even if it took you out of your comfort zone and precious schedule.

Sadly, I was not left with the impression that this was about Genessa at all but the Duggars.

So much for their "JOY" mantra of thinking of Jesus first, others next, yourself last. This was all about placing themselves before the needs of a little girl who was very ill and indeed, who appears to have died within months of filming.

As the mother of a very medically complex child I am enraged at their selfishness and willingness to use the tragedy of a little girl to promote their show and convince themselves that they are such wonderful Christians.

I cannot believe they made her travel in the cold, several hours away, the day after she got out of the hospital, to meet their sorry asses. It was more of an amusement to the Duggars, than a moment for a very sick little girl to meet people she's seen on television. Genessa said that she didn't feel like traveling two hours in the cold to go up there, and I'm sure she didn't anticipate or understand how it was more of a spectacle to make the Duggars themselves look like they care.

My heart brakes for this girl. Couldn't they have turned off the cameras for those moments? She's not a public attraction. It was just disgusting to me.

I was so sickened by this episode.

It's pretty clear the poor girl did not "make a wish" to meet the Duggars. It sounds like she was excited to see someone from TV in the hospital cafeteria way back 2 years ago when Josie was in an in-patient and it was her grandmother who contacted TLC when it was known she was terminally ill. I got the distinct sense Michelle did not even remember the original encounter.

The girl must have known something was up when the cameras showed up and when it ended up being Michelle Duggar instead of someone like Justin Bieber (she was 13 at this point) she was probably very disappointed. And to top it off, had to deal with a 4 hour round trip just for the "honor" of meeting the Duggars. They couldn't even be bothered to meet her half way.

And then we find out in a blurb at the end that's she's now dead. TLC is building up an entire season that we know is going to end up in a miscarriage followed by a massive amount of pomp and circumstance and this poor, exploited girl gets "yeah, she died" tacked on at the end of the episode.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Wow. Disgusting. (Did TLC pay money to the family for permission to air this? Why else would the family of the deceased allow this exploitation? Can the Duggars, or anyone else involved in this storyline think any deeper than the thickness of a sheet of paper (rhetorical question)?
