No more vasectomies

From Huffington Post

A group of female Democratic legislators in the Georgia House of Representatives has proposed a bill that would ban men from seeking vasectomies.

"Thousands of children are deprived of birth in this state every year because of the lack of state regulation over vasectomies," said bill author Yasmin Neal in a statement. "It is patently unfair that men can avoid unwanted fatherhood by presuming that their judgment over such matters is more valid than the judgment of the General Assembly, while women's ability to decide is constantly up for debate throughout the United States."

Hahaha, ah, Georgia, you never fail to amuse me.

I think this is their way of saying "If you're going to take away our reproductive rights, we'll do the same for you men."

While this is funny, I think banning Viagra and like medications would be more effective, and cause more men to take notice.

Yeah, I know too many people who would completely and unironically agree with this.

Well, but you could say Viagra is a "different issue" to "treat a dysfunction." By making it about vasectomies, it's a one-to-one that of course these men will never vote for and then they can't avoid the hypocrisy.

I think a case, perhaps a creative one, but a case nevertheless, could be made that Viagra leads to more abortions and should therefore be outlawed ASAP.

At a minimum, any man seeking the drug should be required by law to undergo a colonoscopy every time a prescription is ordered or refilled. You know, just to be on the safe side.

PS - I love Maude. I was only about 10 when the show was on, but I swear she helped make me the feminist I am today. Right on, Maude!

If you google vasectomy reversal fund, you'll find a bunch of organizations that will give you money to get those boys swimming at ova again. They're probably wondering why they didn't think of this first, just needs a little rewording: It is patently unfair that men can avoid unwanted fatherhood by presuming that their judgment over such matters is more valid than the judgment of God.

How the hell did they get elected if they're not educated enough to know that the sperm has to meet the egg and until then it's NOT a child? Geez...

I know it is supposed to be ironic, but I think they are trying to convince the wrong audience.

It isn't that most men ( or women ) don't want birth control access, including access to sterilization ... it is that a very few right wing fundamentalists ( both men and women ) and their fiscal conservative puppet masters are trying to restrict access to birth control and sterilization for all.

A fertilized egg is not a child. You must be drinking the kool aid the personhood folks are pouring. Pregnancy doesn't occur until the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall. By the standards you just stated a petri dish with a fertilized ovum on it would be pregnant. (Besides I don't even think petri dishes are used for this part of the process.)

Perhaps it's because it's after midnight, I'm a bit loopy, or any other number of reasons.. but a pregnant petri dish... made me laugh so hard I woke the partner. You are awesome!

Actually this really is it. It's not meant seriously, just to get those men thinking about what they're doing by trying to take away birth control.

Too bad many men who don't want kids just talk their partners into birth control pills.

I don't understand why Viagra is covered, but fertility treatments aren't. Viagra is covered because it helps with an organ that isn't working properly. Fertility treatments are to help with an organ (of either or both) that isn't working properly.

I bet it's because men like the idea of "bigger and longer" erections.

It's just like the prostate exam bill- the point is to show that men will flip out if anything touches their right to regulate their own bodies, while they attempt to regulate women's bodies.

I didn't get why the parody used Democrats (when Republican crazies are the ones who think life begins at ejaculation or foreplay or whatever)...but I guess this would explain it somewhat...

Its a satirical bill started by Democrats to demonstrate/make fun of how the Republicans are behaving. I don't know what else there is to explain.

So apparently you didn't?

Here's a better article about it: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/21/ge ... s-for-men/

Some good quotes for the thread in general:

"I hope that through the madness this has caused, it gets him to understand where the woman is coming from," she said. "There are a number of women in other states trying the same ploys we’re trying here."

It is patently unfair that men avoid the rewards of unwanted fatherhood by presuming that their judgment over such matters is more valid than the judgment of the General Assembly. ... It is the purpose of the General Assembly to assert an invasive state interest in the reproductive habits of men in this state and substitute the will of the government over the will of adult men.
