The Bible being used to 'justify' things

Recommended Posts

Grrrrrrr! One of the things I've really learned in the past twelve months is that people can use the Bible to seemingly back up most any position they can think of, to suit their needs and all the while fooling themselves into thinking it's really 'God's way'.

This morning my sister M was having a bad day (she has emotional problems, probably from being taught that the world would end), and exclaimed in irritation at having found a mess on the floor that hadn't been cleaned up in two days. My mother made her clean it up, knowing full well that M hates housework and that M has emotional problems.

I said something to the effect of 'you're seriously going to punish her?' My mother said yes, because M was 'complaining' (Sounded like punishing her for expressing non-positive emotion), and quoted some Bible verse to back up her position. I said she was having a bad day that had just been made much worse, and asked what about the verse that says 'fathers provoke not your children to wrath', and my father said that it actuallly meant 'punish your kids'. Because apparently he gets to ignore the first part and twist 'bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord' into 'punish your emotionally traumatized daughter'. And then later my mother denied that it was a punishment, she told M something about how I 'chose to see it that way' but really it was not a punishment, it was a 'correction'. Which is BS-Christian-speak for 'punishment'.

(Of course they labelled my dissent as 'disrespect', because apparently anything I say that they don't like to hear is 'disrespect', and later my sister put up another passive-aggressive post on facebook about how she totally judges people based on how they treat their parents.)

This stuff is why I refuse to let others' teachings make my moral and ethical decisions for me. No way can 'fathers provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord' mean 'fathers, punish your children whether or not you've screwed up their emotional health'.

Guess I should update again? Frieda (Kiki, we renamed her) is here since the end of February 2021. She came with a bunch of problems, but is the best dog ever and is doing better every day. But we do now know how a dog with ptsd looks like. For real, not joking. If she is triggered during the day, she wakes up screaming at night. Not like dogs dream, but literally screaming. Other than that she went with us on countless trips, loves hiking and even cable cars. She is one heck of a fearless dog in situations who do not remind her of her old life.
My Grandpa passed away last May and I'm still grieving a lot. After sharing a house with my grandparents for over 30 years it is just horrible to lose one of them. Even though it was his decision and he got to go like he wanted. At home, in his bed during the night without doctors. He would have need more care and he did not want more care. So after turning 90 he decided to let go and became weaker and weaker.
In other news my dad stops working for good on April 1st. Retirement time. Keep my Mum and myself in your prayers. We really do not want him at home all the time. Haha!

Well, this is weird. At some point, recently, I broke my wrist. I had to get a Dexa-scan today (put it off for years) and along with some bone loss, damn I had it a few minutes ago… the results said, “Fracture risk is moderate, and the patient has a significant wrist fracture. Treatment is advised.”  my left wrist aches a little but not near as much as my back, feet, knees or fingers, damn RA. I have no idea how it happened. I haven’t fallen in 2 years, haven’t banged or bumped…  the dr will call tomorrow and we’ll get  this straightened out.
