The Duggars and Pop Culture

It was? Well I learned something today heh. Then yes, they sang a song from The Sound of Music, so I'm sure that's an approved movie for them! Even if the Von Trapps were *shock* Catholic!

I was right...around 6:15, Michelle looks like she's doing the YMCA dance!

(rules said to deactivate hotlinks, so I think I did that right)

Don't feel too bad. Most people think that Edelweiss is a traditional song. It was written to make it seem that way!

Anyways, yeah, she's totally doing YMCA, she's even mouthing the words...

Did I miss something when did they go to disneyland, I don't remember that in on the road with 15 or 16 whatever number it was then

It was in the special On the Road with 16 Children, which was filmed in mid-2006, when Johannah was a baby (and it looks like Michelle took her on the spinning tea cup ride).

I agree Boob and Mullet played dumb in the episode with Dolly Parton. They probably know about certain pop culture icons, movies, and TV shows from the 70's and 80's. The kids probably didn't know how Dolly was. I agree with fluttershies, Michelle probably listened to pop music while doing her routines. I bet she probably heard Hey Micky tons of times.

It just bothered me Michelle not knowing who Dolly was. I too agree it was maybe an act. Anyone who grew up in the early to mid 80s at least knew her from movies. I doubt the girls would be allowed to watch 9 to 5 since working females gang up on their boss.

I mean what do the kids talk with eac other about if they aren't exposed to anything? The new book says they aren't allowed to read romance novels.

***

Remember Michelle said she defrauded men with those cheer dances. IMO they perhaps were not paying her any attention.

Realistically, Jim Bob and Michelle have to insist that they remember little pop culture from their pre-Gothard days. If they talk too fondly of those days, it raises the question of why can't their kids have the same experiences. The argument could be made that JB and Michelle listened to regular music, went to parties, led generally normal teenage lives and still decided to join the Gothard cult. The great thing about pop culture is that it can bring strangers together. You always can find something to talk about to pass the time. With the Duggars, after you talk about their large family, there is nothing else. They have nothing to offer by way of conversation. Being stuck in an elevator with one of them would probably make me lose a few brain cells.

What's so interesting is that Michelle never ceases to show pride in being a cheerleader and showing that same defrauding picture. No way is she ashamed of that time. Outside of talking about defrauding her neighbor while moving the lawn in a bikini top, she has never really said anything to make me believe that she has a problem with the way she lived her teenage years. She seems to have enjoyed those years and isn't sorry for it. It's Jim Bob who is obsessed with her kissing non-Jim Bobs. Notice how we hear very little about his teenage years? Something makes me think he spent a lot of time alone.

I think it was Jim Bob who told an impressionable young Michelle that she was defrauding her neighbor and sending the wrong message by cheerleading. Until then, she may have been religious, but hardly what we see today. There are times that I can't help but wonder if she regrets the life that she lives when she looks at her cheerleading pics and thinks of her life back then, despite the perks she may have by being queen bee of the Gothardites. She mentioned in one interview that she had a wonderful childhood, and she had a glow when she talked about it. Sometimes I get a sense of sadness behind her icy exterior.

I also was thinking about Michelle talked about at that conference, about a woman being godly to stave off abuse from her husband. It seemed that Michelle added those things that she practiced in her life on that list. I hope Jim Bob never was abusive to Michelle. I also shudder at the thought that Michelle is teaching her daughters that it is ok for their future husbands to be abusive, that it is the daughters' faults if their husbands are abusive. I know it sounds rather blunt and cruel. Perhaps someone in TLC wanted us to see the list, just to show that the Duggars aren't so perfect after all, that they believe some messed up things.

I agree that he probably spent a lot of time alone in his teenage years. The only time he mentions his teenage years is when he worked as a grocery bagger. That's it. I'd love for him to discuss his friends, activities, favorite classes, anything really. I'd also love for Grandma to discuss what he was like or what she really thinks of him and how they are bringing up their children. So far, I've been disappointed with Grandma, because she could so easily move out (she owns her own property) and take the adult children with her, especially if they are learning that abuse is condoned in relationships.

Did read all 5 pages, however last year they went to 'Dollywood' and the kids had NO idea who Dolly Parton was, well other than 'She donates books to kids'.

I mean really, they have this huge theme park for some lady who donates books? I doubt that.

I wonder how much they can override any blocks on their iPhones/other ways of getting internet access on things they own (as opposed to family computers). Maybe this is why the Duggar kids are some of the few non-blogging famous fundie kids?

Have they spoken about what software they use? Do they use Covenant Eyes (the Coghlans use it and no other filters, although I guess with a house full of girls the parents probably trust them more)? Wonder if that's how the Sin In The Camp (if it was porn-related) got found out.

Excuse the necromancy, but using internet at some friends' house, I saw they use Covenant Eye and asked what exactly it was. On one hand, it seem's stupid that a bunch of grown-ass men (they're sharing a house) feel the need to have tattle-ware for 'accountability to each other'. On the other hand, they ARE taking responsibility for their own 'lustful thoughts' instead of just blocking any and all naughty websites, or trying to make the internet change to suit them.

Since someone already revived this thread, I wanted to point this out:

The young Duggars not knowing who The Beatles or Babe Ruth are isn't an indication of how sheltered they are. A lot of kids don't know.

Last summer during the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics, tons of teenagers were tweeting, "who is this Paul McCartney guy? Who's this old dude?". Even tech savvy modern teens don't all know The Beatles.

Also, several years ago in my community, for the 8th grade state ELA test (english language arts), one of the tasks was to write about Jackie Robinson (they were referring to the baseball player). Many of the students in my local area wrote about a local news anchor, a woman named Jackie Robinson. They're never heard of the baseball player.

You'd be surprised at what modern not purposely sheltered kids don't know and you're not aware of it until you really probe and ask specific questions.

I agree that is common but there is a difference in the generation gap and being part of a cult/legalism. ATI would fobrid you from even watching the Olympics or finding out who these people are.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if even Jill and Jana if they have a working radio in their car, listen to Christian rock as they travel to their midwiffery duties.

To this I would like to add:

Was the Wiskey Rebellion studied at SOTDRT?

How about the fact that George "I cannot tell a lie" Washington was one of America's Original Distillers

Do they know that the process that turns grains into distilled spirits is essentially the same process that turns gloppy old oil in gasoline?

Josh likes cars a lot. He may be a nascar fan. Does he know that the orginal nascar dudes from the 40's and 50's made most of their money running Moonshine? Does this make supporting NSCAR satanic?

Then there's little Marcus Anthony. Named after the pagan dude who had four wives and committed suicide or J-Lo's ex?

I think these kids are lacking in far more than pop culture...just sayin'

I agree with you on the difference between generation gaps and being a part of a cult/legalism. The Duggars kids maybe minus Josh, Jana, and Jill likely don't have current pop culture knowledge of younger celebs, newer movies, or TV shows.

Can anybody link to this?

Back when Alecto was here, I recall her saying that the Duggars made some kind of agreement with the production company about the no gay crew member rule and she seemed to imply that there was confirmation of it somewhere.

Grandma Mary may believe she can be more supportive and protective of her grandchildren if she stays in their home. I think she is a sharp lady, who may have endured some form of abuse from her husband and now is keeping a watchful eye in JB so as history does not repeat itself!

I got so excited when my sons told me that they loved Dr. Who. However, I was surprised that they meant a new Dr. Who. Actually, the new one is very good. But I have a soft spot for the old ones.

The old Doctors are my favorites, too. UNC TV used to show episodes on Saturday afternoons. I'm going to knit a Tom Baker Dr Who scarf for my son-in-law for his birthday this year. One of my tasks tomorrow is to buy a skein of yarn to try out to see if I like working with it.

Well if Alecto said it...

That wouldn't shock me, though. I'd imagine that they'd be pretty concerned about who is going to be spending so much time around their kids.

Not every teen knows the Beatles, that's true, but nearly all of the ones who aren't completely sheltered have at least heard of them, and they're often studied in music class and their songs sung in school concerts. My son's kindergarten class sang Octopus’s Garden at a recital. Although thanks to syndicated TV, my kids probably know the members of the Monkees and the casts of Star Trek and the Brady Bunch better than the Beatles (DD2 does happen to be a Small Faces and a Kinks fan, but I swear I have no idea how that happened. ;) ). I think they all know who Babe Ruth was, but that may be because we lived with his Curse for so long.

But kids like the Duggars have zero connection to pop culture of any era, including their own. It’s hard for me to gauge what sort of impact that will have on any of the kids who eventually leave the lifestyle, but I would imagine it’d make relating to the outside world that much more challenging for them, especially as it's coupled with such a limited overall education. Which is why I feel an urge to smack Jim Bob and Michelle every time they giggle over a pop culture reference the kids will never understand. It's yet another way of isolating them.

It's sad that they don't even get the option to learn about pop culture. Other kids have the option to listen, watch, or read things if they so choose. The Duggars simply don't get to make those choices.

If they get to watch the History Channel they know all that, otherwise probably not- but I doubt most other people do either.

It can be as big a problem or as small a problem as you let it be.

I grew up rather sheltered. No TV in the house, no comic books or magazines and the only non-classical music I remember hearing before the age of 12 was Genesis, Bobby Mcferrin and Yellow (of all things) We also lived a 1/2 hour drive out of a small town and my mother and stepfather worked very long hours so I didn't get to go out much.

Non of the things were forbidden, they just weren't provided or encouraged.

Bookwise, as long as it was age appropriate, I was encouraged to read everything!

Once I got my own stereo, I was allowed to listen to anything. We moved closer to town when I was about 15 and I got to go to the movies as much as I could afford.

To this day I have almost no clue about kids TV shows, kids movies and kids comics. And you know what? It's no biggie! The only time I have ever been bothered by peoples questions was when some idiot asked me "OMG, how did you SURVIVE?" and actually meant it seriously! :cray-cray:

I actually have much bigger problems these days because I absolutely loathe any kind of (daily) soap operas and seem to be surrounded by people who talk about the characters and events as though they know the people or lived through the events. Plus I live in a country that is cricket-mad and I don't even know how many people there are in a team!

For any Duggar kid/adult who leaves the family/cult, it will be another thing to be mad at their parents about. Then it will probably depend on how much they care about what others think of them if it will become an issue or not. Ideally they would want to do a fuck-ton of reading to broaden their knowledge and would pick up quite a bit of pop culture by doing so....
