The Maxwell "girls" shop at Christopher & Banks

In response to a comment regarding the skirts the sisters were wearing when visiting the dairy from, Daddy said they purchased them at Christopher & Banks. Never heard of the place before so looked them up online. Pretty conservative (yeah, I know, of course it would be otherwise they wouldn't shop there), but do they have to purchase the frumpiest skirts available? This (while still fairly conservative imo, would look much better on any of the Maxwell sisters):

but I suppose it isn't daddy approved. By the way, does anyone know if the Maxwells also "buy used & save the difference"?

That skirt actually is kind of nice. I'd wear it to a job interview or something.

I know they make a lot (most?) of their own frumpers and buy the fabric from Joannes. No idea about the boys and Steve or things like underwear and shoes. The men all look reasonably smartly dressed so I imagine their clothes are bought and new.

I agree terranova, I like it myself. I do have a couple of knee-length denim skirts that I actually wear quite often. Longer denim skirts are okay too (though I don't personally own any), but the ankle length ones are just frickin' ugly and frumpy looking. Of course, the shoes/boots one wears with the denim skirts can either make or break the look (imo).

First sentence in the "About us" section

"Welcome to Christopher & Banks. We're a specialty women's apparel retailer serving the baby boomer woman and her desire for style, fit and value in everything she wears."

I don't know very much about the Maxwells, but I do know Christopher Banks. I'm about to turn 36 and Iove their clothes. They used to sell dresses in their stores; they have great lines. Now their dresses are mostly online, which is why I don't buy them because I like to try it on before I buy. Anyway, they come up with some nice styles and their fit is tremendous.

They have pretty good sales and clearances as well. I like their long skirts and snatch them up whenever I can.

I did not like that skirt but how good that they had petites! Why do more places not do that?

I have no fashion sense at all but I might if people made clothes that actually fitted me...

I think that the Maxwells buy new because it is very hard to get the exact same item for three or four used.

It's also one of the few shops in the town they live in. They are only 30 min away from a major metro area but I get the feeling they don't leave the smallish town very often.

That's too short for me! Not about modesty, though. I've found with my body shape, ankle length skirts give me a nice tailored, slimming appearance.

that store is my MIL's favorite, and she is of the "greatest generation' or whatever you call those people born before WWII. She pointed out the store to me and told me that it was WONDERFUL for their bargains, quality, etc. So at least now I know where to shop for her this coming christmas....

they do seem to have some nice things, just not my style.

I don't think they've ever been part of the "buy used" crowd. I don't think each family member has a large wardobe either, as we tend to see them in the same clothes. Since they've stopped "growing", they don't need to replace due to size. I think they did post once they do shop for sales.

There is a Christopher & Banks store near me. Maybe it's just this particular store, or what people are buying in this area, but...

My opinion FWIW- expensive frumpers. Primary target market = age > 75 or 80. (and I am older than I might care to admit, but I quickly turned around and walked out of that store)

My mom and both of her sisters used to all shop here when they taught. I have a couple of shirts I stole from my mom and they fit comfortably, but it's definitely not a store aimed at younger women.

There is a C&B at our mall and it is definitely an "old lady" store in comparison to all the other stores at the mall. The Maxwell girls could find plenty of modest stuff at JC Penney's, but now that Ellen is their spokesperson I am sure its banned in the Maxwell household.I have always hated poor Mary has had to wear the same skirt her 50+ mother and 30 year old sister wear. They always go for the blandest things they can find, never thinking Mary is a child and shouldn't have to dress that way.

Not my style. It's a place my mom shops though. Their selection has improved in the last several years...they used to have some pretty frumpy clothes.

I tend to prefer J Jill as I think they don't compromise style for more mature women. But their price point is a tad higher.

You can find stylish and modest at F21 and H&M but their ad campaigns are probably far too racy for them to consider shopping those places.

I like JJill a lot (purchasing selectively, and during sales...)

H&M is my favorite store and I was just in there yesterday. Its way too hip for Maxwell's,but they could rock it if allowed. The boys would look great in H&M as well, and David Beckham now has an underwear line there....

I was too...got a pair of the red/orange jeggings and a nave blue top. I love the color block look that is in for the spring season.

Oh, and the David Beckham ad campaign is VERY defrauding!

Fun fact: the HM store that opened at Fashion Place mall in the SLC metro area is one of the top stores in the chain inn the US....even the Mormons don't mind being defrauded by Beckham every now and then!

:shock: I shop at Christopher Banks. Some of it is fundy and some of it is very trendy. My bestie who is very fashion focused also has a lot of their clothes. Except she buys brand new at the store and I find mine at goodwill. :oops: Our taste runs more like this;

Not all of it is old lady but I do admit that due to our fluffiness we tend to cover up more than others. She is almost 33 and I'm 41 and we always see youngerish :? woman shopping there. I don't think that is a real word but I'm talking about the age group of late 20's to early 50's that we see shopping there for themselves.

I have a huge sad now knowing that I shop for the saame clothes as the Maxwells. :(

LPL, I'm 41 as well so you are definitely NOT an old lady. We are young damn it! That first shirt you linked looks like what is going on at H&M right now. The CB at my mall is very, very small and I believe has a "Red Hat" area where they sell the Red Hat clothes.(I could be wrong, but one of the stores on that side does). Our mall is a one mile oval and they have it set up so all the "trendy" stores are all together on one side and all of the "grown up" stores are on the other. I go to Penney's for their clearance on the adult side, but mostly I go to H&M and some of the other "trendy" stores because I have a 12.5 year old daughter who must be in fashion at all times. At least I am not wearing low rise jeans with Uggs and a Hollister t-shirt.(That is what my daughter is wearing today. :))

I used to shop at the big three for aging boomer women: Chico's, Coldwater Creek, and J. Jill, but I got tired of my young adult daughters going through my closet and discarding everything that came from there as being unacceptable for one reason or another--either too frumpy, too twee, or too obviously Chico's. I'm pretty much limited to Jones New York and Ann Taylor outlet stores now.

Aww I didn't want to make it sound like I was looking down my nose! I like all the items you listed....it's nice stuff, just not for me. As I understand, bright orange/red jeggings arent for everyone either LOL!
