I would honestly love to hear Jim-Bob's rationalization

Jim-Bob is all about straying away from all *he* deems "immoral" or "immodest" - which is pretty much everything outside the walls of his compound.

So how does he rationalize appearing on - not to mention taking a paycheck from - a network that airs programs about fashion (full of "Nike" moments), featuring homosexuals (ie on "A Baby Story"), premarital sex ("I Didn't Know I was Pregnant" is full of it), tattoos, etc.

If all of these things are "ungodly" in his (not so humble) opinion, is it not hypocrisy?

I would love to hear his explanation for this....(not that I'm holding my breath).

Yeah, there's so much hypocrisy, and I think he & Michelle have addressed some of it in their books. For instance, they think having a teevee show is fine because they want to "encourage" others.

Also, your username made me laugh. (Out loud!)

I've heard the "encouragement" angle from them. But doesn't lending their name/family life to the network also a sign of "encouragement" for TLC? Therefore, "encouraging" defrauding/NIKE!/ungodliness for all?

Glad I could make you laugh! :D

Evangelicals like the Duggars are allowed to commit any sin imaginable as long as they are attempted to convert sinners. The biggest one they commit is lying, but there's plenty of hypocrisy in there too. And it's all fine as long as they are recruiting.

There's a great line from Big Love that I think works here:

"It's called lying for the Lord and we've been doing it for years."

They are moments when they encounter immodestly dressed women in public. One of the girls will say 'nike'. It's their code word and all the boys will put their heads down until it's over.

The other day I got a smug sense of satisfaction when I realized that I bought the Duggar's first book used on Amazon and saved the difference, thereby failing to fund their fundie lifestyle. Then I realized...I bought the Duggar's book. *frown*

@Precious Addition- It's ok. We forgive you :P Assuming, of course, you bought it for the purposes of snarkmatics (that's supposed to be a clever play on "semantics"...yeah..)

I bought it for the recipes!

I didn't want to waste the money on it but wanted to read it so I went to chapters after work every so often and would just hide out in one of their chairs and read a bit more each time.

Buy used and save the difference? pffft - just don't even buy at all. I win at being cheap!

Maybe they don't know that much about other TLC shows? I LOVE my evil heathen TV and I watch a fair amount of TLC, but it seems I'm stumbling across a TLC program I've never heard of before every other day. For someone who doesn't have a TV or doesn't watch a lot of it, I would buy that they're pretty in the dark about what's on.

But yeah, I imagine they would use the "encouraging others" rationalization.

IT'S A MINISTRY, Y'ALL

WITH MORE BUTTER FOR SMUGGAR! How come Pawler Deen didn't come up with this marketing angle 1st? Hell, she has her name on bedsheets for crying out loud.

(and please Duggar marketpeople, if y'all even TRY to market Duggar bedsheets, there will be a mass move to Antartica...and since there are fewer Duggars than people whom they disgust, they'll need something warmer than Wallyworld white cotton...)

When the Duggars went to Kleinfeld's bridal salon in Manhattan for a crossover with Say Yes to the Dress, Randy Fenoli was nowhere to be seen. Randy and Monte Durham are so fabulous that the Duggars heads would collectively asplode! :scared-eek:

This has to be the thing called congitive dissonance. In their case, it's doing totally unchristlike things, things they do not believe in and then, explain it or reason it so they won't feel like they are shitty people.

I think the Duggars might know about what the other TLC shows are about. I think Deanna, Amy, and some of their relatives watch the show on TLC. The Duggars watch episodes through DVD's TLC provides for them because they don't have cable or satellite. I think Amy and Deanna have probably told them about the other TLC shows and the Duggars had to known about all the crap went down with Jon and Kate. A couple of people on DWOP posted sometime back that there is a satellite dish on top of Josh's rental house. I'm sure Josh has seen some of the other TLC shows.

The rest of the Duggars would freak out some of the ads and promos that have aired during 19KAC. Last summer there were ads for Playtex bras that featured women in their bras strutting around and there was one week in which ads for the Glee concert movie aired and one ad featured a shot of Heather Morris performing in a bikini. If the Duggars had cable at TTH and watched the show on TLC, they would have been freaked out by the ads. I do wonder if Joshie has been watching the show live through TLC or if TLC is still giving him DVD's.

Jim Boob and the family will always use the usual "ministry" excuse and they have taught the kids to use that excuse. In that one Q&A episode, the girls used that excuse too. Boob and Mullet are hypocrites. There was an interview in which Mullet said that the reason the family didn't have cable was because it would be like having garbage delivered to their home. Mullet is a moron and she should realize that part of the reason her family has show is because of cable and satellite subscribers. If the Duggars' show had been on a broadcast network it probably wouldn't have lasted more than season. A broadcast network would have canned it because of the ratings. Cable networks can sometime deal with 1.5 million viewer ratings.

I believe at one point, M was quoted as saying thay are ministering to the culture. That said, I think that they feel that the "reality" shows on TLC reflect actual reality. The exaggeratedly absurd versions of real life depicted on the shows works perfectly as a leeson in fear for their brood. What tiny glimpses of "reality" the kids get from the TLC channel would frighten me too if I were raised in such a cloistered environment. Even though the Duggar kids have been out and about in public and interacted with really real people who are generally not scary at all, it is easy to sell them the idea that the "nice" people they meet out at book signings and other public appearances are just as phony as they are. These seemingly perfectly fine "wordly" folk live as sinfully as the TLC reality people.

All of that said, based just on sheer numbers, the Duggar kids do get a pretty good overview of ordinary people as they travel about ministering to the culture. Even the cute young man who was picured with Jinger on the Santorum campaign, although a BJU right wing conservative Christian, is still quite a worldly guy to them and would definitely be defrauding to the girls. I really can't see anything JimBob or M saying that would counter the attraction to such a young man. At least some of the kids will have enough outside information to come to the conclusion that a life so cloistered is not required to be a good/happy/godly person.

Oh that explains so much, and now I know what the where the de-frauding expression comes from as well ( I just assumed it was an american slang term I'd never heard before!)

Well Michelle was right about one thing, watching their show is like having garbage delivered to your home. Big steaming heaps of garbage.
