Kim at LiaS and her bottle of wine

I was a bit shocked by Kim's latest story, meant to be humorous, I suppose.

Her sister in law is minding three of Kim's littles. Kim plans to visit with sister-in-law when she stops to pick them up. So she plans on stopping at home for a bottle of wine, before heading to sister-in-laws. Lots of things distract her, but she eventually gets that wine!

Then she (presumably) drinks the wine with her sister-in-law and drives her three littles home.

Here's what surprised me:

1. That a bottle of wine would be so darn important to her visit

2. That she would then, with alcohol in her system, drive her three little kids home. Maybe she had a glass, maybe half a bottle

3. That she'd do this in the dark

4. That she'd admit all this on the internet

Maybe I'm naive, but it seemed irresponsible to me. If I want to visit with someone, I just go and visit. I don't need to make a detour for wine on the way there.

Edited to tone down my "shock" to "surprise"

I enjoy a glass of wine with my sister and so can relate to that part - I just thought the rest of the story was boring, not funny, but maybe you had to be there to appreciate it....

She doesn't specifically say she drank and drove, though it looks like it - though maybe the wine was a thank you gift to her sister for having the children and she was only having a small glass herself?

I think it depends on how long the visit was, and how much she drank (if she did). A glass of wine at the beginning of a 3 hour visit wouldn't stop me from driving home. And I'm the easiest drunk in the world.

I"m surprised that she needs a car to drive less than a quarter-of-a-mile away. That's less than two blocks. How's the weather in Texas these days? Doesn't she have a stroller?

Honestly, I didn't raise an eyebrow over the bottle of wine (she could have been picked up later by somebody else, or the visit could have been long enough for the alcohol to get out of her system, etc) nor the fact that she needed a car for a quarter mile (her youngest being 2, 4 and 6, I can understand wanting to just stick them in the car instead of walking back, especially if they came with toys or food). However, the fact that she almost missed giving medication to her dog and feeding the chickens? Ugh. C'mon, surely in a family of TWELVE you can make sure your animals are properly and timely cared for...

Also, I'm wondering when are we getting the pregnancy announcement? Must be anytime now. Her kids are very evenly spaced and the youngest boy was July 2010, unless I'm mistaken...

The recent evidence speaks against an announcement any time soon.

Do you mean the fact that she's drinking wine in the first place? Eh, I am not so sure about that. Not to start a fetal alcohol flame war (again?), but KimC doesn't seem the type to fret about the odd glass in pregnancy, hold that as a point for or against her.

They like their alcohol in the Coghlan family-She drinks to help Breast feeding along and the oldest girl of 18 mentions how she likes a cold one sometimes.

Although she is plenty fundie now, my understanding is that Kim didn't grow up fundie. Weird, but not fundie. In Oregon or Washington state somewhere. From the photos I've seen of her family, they are a little out there. I'm sure they drink alcohol and maybe do some "other things" of the illegal nature. (pure conjecture on my part).

She's mentioned that she and her dad did not get along, or had problems, but that's about all I recollect. She almost has that Oregon/hippie sort of persona, but then there's all the Doug Phillips worship.

Oh, she grew up fundie alright - she's a seond generation quiverfull homeschooler, oldest of fourteen. She had a whole weird "almost dated by mistake once" experience before she realized she was a good christian girl and only wanted to court marriage as a goal. She never really said what the issue in her relationship with her father was, but I don't think it was a religious issue.

(can you tell I know way too much about this woman's life? Gateway fundie and all that)

The sole reaction I could have was "what?! a fundie who drinks alcohol? And actually admits to it?!"

They're Presbyterian fundies, so alcohol is no big deal for them. R.C. Sproul Jr. used to get all liquored up with the manly men from his church, but I think he's mellowed out a bit (or maybe he's just more on the downlow about it now). Google his name with "drinking" or "alcohol" and you'll see incriminating photos and read all kinds of wild stories.

there's truth here- presbyterians really do like to drink.

Haha, me too! But yeah, Presbyterian fundies like them "enjoy alcohol as a blessing from God, to be appreciated in moderation." (Theoretically, at least!) I do think she went out of her way to mention the wine in the anecdote, though. She knows that lots of fundies disapprove and likes nothing more than stirring up a good controversy.

Guess I should update again? Frieda (Kiki, we renamed her) is here since the end of February 2021. She came with a bunch of problems, but is the best dog ever and is doing better every day. But we do now know how a dog with ptsd looks like. For real, not joking. If she is triggered during the day, she wakes up screaming at night. Not like dogs dream, but literally screaming. Other than that she went with us on countless trips, loves hiking and even cable cars. She is one heck of a fearless dog in situations who do not remind her of her old life.
My Grandpa passed away last May and I'm still grieving a lot. After sharing a house with my grandparents for over 30 years it is just horrible to lose one of them. Even though it was his decision and he got to go like he wanted. At home, in his bed during the night without doctors. He would have need more care and he did not want more care. So after turning 90 he decided to let go and became weaker and weaker.
In other news my dad stops working for good on April 1st. Retirement time. Keep my Mum and myself in your prayers. We really do not want him at home all the time. Haha!

I don't always make good decisions for myself due to severe depression but I did today actively decide not to do something that might have been detrimental for me and am very proud of myself.

Well, this is weird. At some point, recently, I broke my wrist. I had to get a Dexa-scan today (put it off for years) and along with some bone loss, damn I had it a few minutes ago… the results said, “Fracture risk is moderate, and the patient has a significant wrist fracture. Treatment is advised.”  my left wrist aches a little but not near as much as my back, feet, knees or fingers, damn RA. I have no idea how it happened. I haven’t fallen in 2 years, haven’t banged or bumped…  the dr will call tomorrow and we’ll get  this straightened out.

I got my stickers today after renewing my vehicle registration.
Just reminded me again how different Minnesota is from Iowa.  Since I didn't register my vehicle in January last year, I got a sticker for the month since all MN plates are made with JAN printed in the lower left hand corner.  They also require people to put stickers on both the front and back plates, as opposed to Iowa that just want's the single sticker on the rear plate.
Oh well, considering how MN is trying to move into the 2020s while Iowa is trying to lurch the fuck back to the 1840s, the type and number of license plate stickers is really a minor thing.
