Remember when Joys birthday party was a train ride and ice cream?

Jim Bob in that episode mentioned that Josie was saying "Da Da" but that Jordyn wasnt talking yet... but she expressed herself in a variety of ways. Jordyn is a year older than Josie... so isnt that kinda bad? Does anyone know if Jordyn has started talking since then? That was, what, a year ago?

I know we dont hear Jennifer talk much. I did love it when they had the Ask The Duggars thing and Jackson was trying to tell Jennie what to say,and she kept telling him no.

On another note, does anyone remember what episode it was when Joy was flinging hangers at Jill?

While I agree it might be good to have Jordyn checked or tested, lack of talking doesn't necessarily mean anything. My great-nephew hardly spoke a word until he was about 3-1/2 and then it's like he exploded and was talking in full sentences overnight and hasn't shut up since. Sometimes his mother longs for a day or two of silence.

My friend didn't learn to talk until she was three or four but she had speech therapy - goodness knows how her speech would be affected if otherwise.

My baby is behind on speech and we are watching it. I am trying to do a lot of language-related activities with him and we taught him some basic signs to reduce his frustration.

I cannot believe that a veteran mom would miss something as important as this, but Michelle is not the typical veteran mom.

It is definitely something that should be checked out by speech therapists. It can't possibly hurt after all. However, it could also be the cameras, at least to some extent. When I was three, if you were my family or my babysitter, I wouldn't shut up. However, take me anywhere in public and my lips would seal shut. While I was more than fully capable, I just couldn't talk in front of strangers. (A year of pre-school fixed the extreme shyness. You learn to talk in front of strangers very easily when they knock down your block tower.) And yes, the camera crew is there a lot, but maybe all Jordyn sees is strange men with big machines following her around. I'd be terrified and wouldn't have been able to speak a word if I tried.

I really feel sorry for Jordyn, I see a broken spirit.

They use sign language with the little ones and I've known other Moms who tried it and quit because the kids didn't work on talking once they had a way to get what they wanted.

Jennifer barely talks, and she's 4. Poor Jordyn gets no attention; of course her speech is probably delayed. Of course they will never get evaluated, not even the "tiny precious miracle" seems to be getting any early intervention. But hey, she's walking, so everything is just fine...

I see soooo much of Jana in Jordyn. They look very much alike, yes, but I think they are very close personality-wise, too. They are both very shy, quiet wallflowers who seem to get stepped on and overlooked in that family. Neither seems to have a strong enough spirit to escape from the confines of the submissive robot mold they are being shoved into.

If some of the adults in that family spent some time talking to Jordyn, I doubt that she would have a speech delay.

Some children are slower to talk than others. However, if there is any concern of speech delay - the child should be evaluated by a speech/developmental specialist. The child's hearing should also be checked. If the child is developing normally then no harm is done by checking and if there is a true delay/medical problem then the sooner it is addressed the better. The first few years are critically important for speech/brain development. I hope that the Duggars have had this little girl checked out and I hope our concerns are baseless however I fear that the Duggars are more concerned with conceiving than caring for their children.

I was one of those kids that didn't talk. It was because I was the youngest in a family with 4 adults and all I had to do was point and grunt. One day, I started, and then I never shut up. :D

I don't know, I think there is something more serious going on than just not enough attention. Kids tend to pick up language as long as they are exposed to it any way, even if nobody talks directly to them. If Jordyn isn't talking yet, she needs to see a real therapist. I hope the Duggars take their kids to the pediatrician for well-child visit since they can definitely afford it, and hopefully they'll end up with a very perceptive doctor who notices it as more than just shyness, because of course Michelle and Jim Bob would never actually volunteer that information.

It's sad that if Jordyn really does have a speech problem she will just be ignored like all of the other forgotten blessings before her. She will probably be taught by a J'slave at SOTDRT and never have her needs addressed.

What my MIL says and she's a preschool teacher, so she kinda knows this stuff, is that if the kid is really proficient in sign language, they to some extent consider it "talking" because they're talking and communicating but not speaking.

My husband didn't talk until he was like 2 1/2, but once he started, you can't shut him up.

IIRC, in the 2nd book Boob and Mullet pretty much chalked Jennifer's lack of to talking up to the fact that "she's a very serious little girl." WTF!?!? Are you that lazy as parents that that's the only reason you can come up with?
