The Maxwell girls have been baking up a storm and they are off out tonight to pierce the air with the sounds of the MG at Christmas.

They mention they've not been caroled to vary often.

Which makes me wonder just how they're perceived by their neighbors. Recently they had some women over for a tea, and they had the Bible study (though it seems that was mostly family members?) which is probably more "out" than the family has been in a while, at least judging from their usual posts.

But I can imagine them just being "that Bible thumping family on the corner, yeah, they're quiet but we don't really know them" to most of the neighborhood, because it seems they mostly don't socialize with their street or their town as a town, so much. (Of course two houses on the street belong to family, too.) I mean, just thinking about it... there's likely some mid-teens kids by them, just purely by odds, and maybe some households where the Mom is 30, right nearby. So isolated, but just by Steve-O. Leavenworth is a decent sized town.

I think maybe the Maxwells going caroling could be something that they do, to sort of keep nice with the neighbors. I have also they don't socialize with neighbors or other people in their town.

I'm not trying to be cruel, but I think Anna should get some gum contouring done.

Anna Marie looks positively gorgeous. Mary has turned into quite a beauty too. I hope they enjoy their time together. Grammar errors aside, Bethany is a cutie.

I've never been caroled to, and I kinda thought it was something people don't do. Is it common in their area?

I don't recall ever having carolers show up at my door. As a kid we tried it a few times, but it was the effort of kids with the expected results.

If I were a Maxwell neighbor, I wouldn't give in to their attempts to socialize once in a while for their own image. I bet they never attend neighborhood barbecues or parties; they are too godly for that. But, they'll try to drag their neighbors into their insanity. I'm sure most say 'no thanks'.

I said it before in an earlier thread, if I were their neighbor, I would not answer my door when they showed up with their horrible attempts at singing and baked goods with 'come to jesus' messages on them.

It was very common when I was growing up in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s. Mostly it was groups of children who sang for money. When I started going to church we used to go out as a youth group and sing to the local church members, especially if they were elderly or sick.

Nowadays it is less common, but we still keep a pot of loose change or a tin of chocolates by the front door, in case any kids turn up. It is not unknown, where carolling does take place, for kids to sing songs like Frosty the Snowman or Jingle Bells, and for older Christian sorts to shame them for not knowing any 'real' carols that tell the 'true' story of Christmas. :naughty:

I agree that Mary has grown to be very pretty. Sarah, of course, is as beautiful as always. Anna looks so much better than many of her past pictures.

When I was growing up, carolers showed up at our house several times and a couple of times, the caroling group was led by my dad's co-worker. The singing was always nice and the carolers were friendly and would say "God Bless You" and things like that.

When I was in college, I had an on-campus job for awhile and there was an incident in which a group leader from one of the Christian groups on campus came into my workplace to make copies of small leaflets she and her group were planning to give out while caroling around the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

I agree If I was a Maxell neighbor i would avoid them, if they came caroling to my house. I don't see the Maxwells being friendly with their neighbors year round. Based on some of the comments, they have said about non-fundies, I don't think they would socialize well with their neighbors. Sarah mentioned feeling sorry for kids in public schools, I could see the Maxwells looking down on their neighbors for public schools, attending regular churches, playing sports, reading a variety of books and other things.

It would be fun, though, to answer the door and say 'sorry, no time to listen to singing; my son has to finish his homework for public school tomorrow and he is trying to finish it early enough to be able to watch Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. While he is doing that that, I have to finish reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for book club tomorrow night and my husband is watching the nightly news right now but as soon as it is over he has to go pick up our daughter from basketball practice. We just don't have time, sorry'. All the while, standing in front of them in full make-up, sweatshirt and capri-length sweat/yoga pants.

Then again, I have a feeling their neighbors may not know exactly how crazy the Maxwell's are in order to antagonize them the way I would. I doubt the neighbors read their blog for snark material the way I do in order to know some of their craziest positions on life.

I'd be friendly to the Maxwells if they lived in my neighborhood. I may not be their kind of Christian, but I am a Christian and Jesus said to love thy neighbor. I do not always succeed, but I try. Besides, I think it's important for the kids to know there are friendly people nearby in case they need help.

I used to go caroling as a kid with scouts or school clubs but it was always to the house close to the downtown area. If the Maxwells live on the outskirts of town, then I really doubt anyone would want to go caroling. I bet some people still do go caroling as it is fun for all but it is location, location, location.

Totally agree, the writing is atrocious (does not seem to be revised at all, very awkward all over). Disclaimer: my writing is also far from perfect but some of these booboos in the text are quite sad.

Ever since she started wearing her hair down I have suspected that Christopher revealed to N-R Anna his preference for how his sisters wear their hair. I agree it makes her appear much more relaxed and younger.

The neighbor kids tried to carol at my brother when he got home from work the other day. He fled at top speed into the house and forbid me to open the door. I would have done the grin and bear it routine if it had been me, but I don't blame him for skedaddling.

Two of my sons went carolling with their youth/college group to their church's "shut-ins" (I hate that word, but that's the one they use in the bulletin). This morning, I asked one of them how it went. He said, "Awkward. As always."

The focus on singing-related activities, for teenage boys in particular, is one of the cruellest aspects of the Church youth group. Most of the men I still know from my church days look back in particular horror at the way they were paraded to sing at Christmas carol concerts and Residential Homes at just the time their voices were breaking and squeaking all over the place, and they really should have been allowed to spend their Sunday evenings holed up in their bedrooms, sulking, like ordinary teenagers. :lol:
