Hmm, I'm not a classics scholar, but some of that sounds more like Rome... and wasn't homosexuality always popular in ancient Greece, even in it's heyday?

Quote
I think we’d all agree that our culture is in a less than satisfactory state of health at this point in history. And the church has fallen into the same disrepair…following in culture’s footsteps by about 10 years or so. So it would behoove us to take a look at the underlying assumptions that we hold which have directly contributed to the mess around us. Only then can we hope to make a shift…in our own paradigms…and ultimately…in the destructive direction in which our culture at large is currently headed.

Overman makes the argument that America is currently “swimming in Greek soupâ€, meaning that “we are surrounded and immersed in ways of seeing and doing which date back to ideas planted and cultivated over a period of about 300 years (600-300 B.C.).â€

What’s so bad about Greek soup?[*]

Nothing…IF there is no Creator God…and everything is up for grabs. Nothing…if any and every philosophy is true and right. (Which, logically, makes none of them true or right. Right?)

The fact is, there IS a Creator God…and nothing is up for grabs. All of life and all of Truth and all of US belong to Him. Not every philosophy is true and right. That isn’t even remotely intelligent to think that way. It’s goes against the rules of logic. If there is such a thing as Truth…then everything that is not Truth…is Lie. False. Wrong.

What Overman does is compare and contrast Greek thinking/philosophy/life to Hebrew thinking/philosophy/life. Why Hebrew? Because the Hebrews were the ones through whom God originally chose to reveal Himself and His Ways. They had the great responsibility of reflecting to the heathen world around them HOW the ways of God should play out in the nitty gritty of life. They were to be an example of what happens when a culture loves, honors and serves their Creator…and what happens when they don’t.

I'm confused. Isn't Greece supposed to be important in the formation of Western civilization the RasBotkins, etc. are supposed to be conserving? And aren't Greek ideas about the Logos, etc incorporated in the New Testament? Wasn't the renaissance guided by renewed interest in Greek and Roman learning? Weren't the Greek and Roman republics inspirational to America's Founding Founders? Just how much progress do these so-called visionaries want to undo?

*Avgolemono is delicious, though I wouldn't want to swim in it.

Cults from the East have been accepted.

Do they consider any belief system other than Christianity to be a "cult?"

Astrology is practiced.

I've seen astrology-themed decorations on the floors of Jewish homes in Israel circa Ancient Rome.

Men practice manners which have previously been considered effeminate.

Standards for male and female behavior have varied greatly across time and cultures.

The upper class is consumed with the pursuit of pleasure.

Every freakin' era! It's what defines the upper class!

Public athletic games have turned into professional contests.

What about jousting?

Men who want to watch dances by unclad women do not have to go far to find them.

If you put "dancing" in quotes, I'm sure this is true of every era.

The dramas of the day are full of seduction and adultery.

When have dramas NOT been filled with seduction and adultery? That's what's interesting to watch! What is their idea of a good drama--two people sitting around, drinking tea, and talking about how good the tea is?

Abortion is commonly practiced.

Abortion has always been commonly practiced. The only difference between then and now is that now we have developed ways to make it safe for the woman.

Exactly. These people are so small-minded it kills me.

I don#t think in Ancient Greece women ever had a chance of more rights and a role in publich life; apart from a very few philosophers? And certainly Greek schooling didn't turn out half-educated masses because the masses weren't formally educated at all.

What time and place in history do the following statements describe?

  • Many women worked outside the home
Working mothers were often forced to surrender the "care" of there children to substandard facilities
In urban areas, the ratio of adult males to professional prostitutes could be as low as 12 to 1.
    Pornography was popular
The state of education was such that it was not hard to find children had never heard of Jesus, in a nominally "Christian" nation.
Many were worried about large numbers of foreign immigrants

Oh NOES! Victorian times were not all about ladies sipping tea and talking prettily to god-fearing suitors? How shall I go on living with that knowledge?
