Fundie mom and children at the Dr.'s office this afternoon

Today I had a doctors appointment and walking in I immediately noticed the fundie mom and her 5 children sitting against the wall. The two older boys looked to be about 2, 3, 4ish, and sitting accross from them was another mom and her two boys who looked to be in the same 2-4 age range. The nonfundie mom's boys were playing and the fundie boys very much wanted to join in the playing with them. One of the nonfundie boys even announced to his mom that there were new friends the same as him as his little brother.

Fundie mom couldn't move her family fast enough. She had her 5 children up and shuffled into a corner section of the waiting room so fast. She clearly did not want her children playing with nonfundie children.

I felt so bad for the all the children involved. What on earth do you tell a 4 year old as to why they can't play with another 4 year old? Clearly the sick child in the fundie home was the one clinging to mom's lap and looking generally sick.

As I read this, I begin to have slight remorse.... a couple years ago, when my DD was a little baby, I was out shopping and saw what was probably a Fundie mom (I was not quite as clear on Fundie-ism then) with her bajillion kids who *looked* happy. I smiled at her and told her what a beautiful family she had. Hm. Part of me hopes that it really was a *beautiful* family.

I used to get this all th etime where I used to live there was a large Hasidic population. If I went to th epark and they were there my kids thought nothing of jumping on the swings next tot hem or playing in the sandbox with them but they always moved away and ignored my kids friendliness. Sometimes if they didn;t move fast enough the moms would talk to them in yiddish an dthey'd move fats then!! Sometimes I was tempted to say something back in Yiddish(I know a little) just to freak the moms out!

I'm shocked they took the kids to the doctor. Usually they just try some quack herbal remedy they read about on the internet.

The doctor might actually suggest....vaccinations!

It's sad. This whole keeping apart issue is one of the things that makes me bonkers about these families in general. If they are all so filled with the strength of their convictions/testimonies, why do they have such overwhelming fear of thought-contagion through even minimal interaction with a "worldy" four-year-old?

Although, to be fair, she may just have wanted to keep her children away from the Flu. :)
