Origen, an Egyptian christian of the early third cenury

I'm reading a Book caled "Apocalypses" by Eugen Weber

Origen and many other early christian were against a literal interpretation of the Bible.

They felt it was too Jewish and that scriptures should be taken symbolically and discouraged calls of the 'second coming of Christ" as a Jewish fable ,many early Christians were actualy embarrasing of the literalists.

Sain Augustine also used symboism to account for the differences between the differing origins of Jesus in Matthew and Luke.

I would recommend it. It's full of fascinating history on many subjects.

Origen was later consitered a heretic (though not so much today) for his view that the Son in the Trinity was subordinate to The Father.

His works influenced Arius (The Arian Heresy) and lead to the discussion at the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed, especially the part about the Father,Son and Holy Spirit being co-eternal:

"And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father [the only-begotten; that is, of the essence of the Father, God of God], Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father".
