Dr. Pepper 10 ad?

What do you think of the new Dr. Pepper 10 ads? (http://www.forbes.com/sites/lauraheller ... marketing/)

I was really surprised to have the commercial pop up on Hulu with its "Not for Women" tagline....of course, I had to mark that "this commercial is not relevant to me"! I didn't think that a company could get away with something so blatantly sexist in this day and age. They could have marketed the ad to men much better without making a point of excluding women.

(PS - Mods, feel free to move this, but I thought it belonged in this forum and not worldly distractions because the issue is sexism in advertising :) )

Reminds me of the 'It's not for girls!' thing on yorkie packaging/advertising in the UK a few years ago (yorkies being a type of chocolate bar). In that case I *think* their intention was that girls/women would think "well we'll see about that!", rush out and buy yorkies to prove that they could eat them after all. Don't know if it worked or not though.

Sometimes ads will try to be a parody of sexist crap and claim that they are making fun of that attitude. Unfortunately, those sexist attitudes aren't some quaint little relic. They're common enough in our current society that attempts to parody them often fall flat and just end up appearing to reinforce them. I think that's what the Dr. Pepper ad was going for, but they have failed miserably. The same thing happened with Axe commercials. They were trying to be funny and show how ridiculous other ads are that basically say "Use this product and women will magically drawn to you", but the people who buy the stuff don't generally see that layer of irony and just think the ads are straightforward.

The ad campaign is absolutely infuriating and ridiculous. On the other hand, Dr. Pepper has come out with at least three flavors in recent years that haven't really gone anywhere; but Ten is just about everywhere in grocery stores already, even though it's basically Another Dr. Pepper Light.
